If you take any business that you participate in seriously, you have to know the rules of the game. One question that comes to mind when reading many tweets or posts on forums is the following, “Do you actually know what a premium domain name is?”
I would say many do not, it can come from lack of experience (understandable) or perhaps it could be a language thing, the person might be dabbling in names where the language those names are rooted in is not their native language.
Sometimes it’s just faulty thinking, people want to believe that their alternative variation of a true premium name is premium itself. Look those names can and do sell. No doubt, but they are not a premium name.
I would also say when speaking or trying to sell to other domain investors, don’t use the word premium. A fellow domain investor knows what a premium domain name is, you don’t need to tell them. If you are offering them Plum.com, they know it’s premium. If you are offering them Skroove.com and call it premium they just walk away thinking you are clueless.
The premium term is used to market to end users and outside industry auctions. Where it makes sense to use the term, but not to another investor.
You want to have connections in this business, you want to have people you can do wholesale business with, if you keep calling average names premium names it might hinder building those relationships.
Plenty of average names sell every week at Sedo and GoDaddy.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In other words, what to “you” may be average may be to someone else Premium. I have searched on the GoDaddy and other domain valuation programs and they bear no relationship with real World. I have sold domain for $30K (Thirty Thousand) which was told was was worth $150 (one hundred and Fifty). Many of my sales are many times more than the Bot Valuer tells me.
Raymond Hackney says
Yeah but that’s not the point, average names sell for big money all the time that does not make them premium. Nothing to do with beauty.
John says
Hey Ray, I remember that time you were able to grab pokernights.com in the comments, and it being sold just appeared to me the other day. I almost certainly would have posted “sold” for the first time ever in these blogs if I had seen it before you, lol. Congrats.

No they don’t!!
But they are EXPERTS when it comes to worthless pigeonshit! :-)))

.ai is going to take .coms place at the #1 spot

If this is your prediction, please include your full name and website so we can acknowledge you in the coming years. Its a great way to create and solidify your reputation for the industry.
Mark Thorpe says
@ Michael Nice one Lol
John says
No Michael, he’s just making fun of Rick about .ai, or more accurately thinking he is in his imagination, in the spirit of “flowers.mobi,” so he’s just being a troll. An anonymous troll.

Exactly I have sold some truly average names for $10,000 to $15,000 names that I never thought anybody would want to purchase I just got lucky but that didn’t make the names premium names.

Good question. Superb question. Imperative question to ask yourself. But the answer runs a lot deeper.
At the other end of the spectrum, in “eye of the beholder” la la land, I disagree even more.
“Pigeonshit” FTW.

I learned from Morgan Linton in 2008 what premium domains were and it remains the same.
I think that very few among the vast majority of investors do not know how to differentiate a premium domain, I see it every day Linkedin etc.
Michael Anthony Castello says
These days, the word “premium” has been way over used to sell just about anything and is too broad a definition. I’m usually underwhelmed by what is now termed a premium domain name.
GoldSilver.com is not a true premium. Gold.com and Silver.com are. A true premium is something like a generic domain name, which is obvious and usually a one-off like Saturday.com. Those are the ones that are the most valuable.
steve says
Well, I agree — this is the correct definition of what I consider a premium domain.
You can go even further and say a premium domain is a domain that you can liquidate for market value in a short period of time, just like an excellent real estate property in a prime location.
However, if you visit the many sites selling domains, their” premium” domain listings encompass domains with valuations as low as 7500 USD and as high as in the millions.
Nameworth has a valuation took for ONLY .com domains and it sorts high quality domains into several tiers of “premium”… with a page of data points for each ,com domain you submit …
Must all premium domains be .COM(s)? There could be exceptions — see KREDIT.DE, YOU.AI, CASINO.CO.UK, for example

Hello everyone, gentlemen, I have been a domain collector since 2009, and I am guided by several criteria for my evaluation of certain domains as premium, on this site there is a column for leaving your site – this is a domain that belongs to me, on which I will do a domain auction, it just belongs to me from above 300 domains, and due to the fact that I want to leave only the ones I need in the future, to sell most of this amount, I decided to go the opposite way, since I didn’t sell anything at auctions, and decided to make my own auction, where there won’t be such a ” “garbage dump” of millions of mediocre domains, on which, although not premium, but quite brilliant domains are lost, briefly about myself – an aspiring writer and director, now on my Ukrainian.Army domain, being new to WordPress, I am creating a social network UAR, the main messenger of which will be providing this platforms for the people of the World, so that everyone understands two things together: 1) If the Chinese and Russians defeat Ukraine, this will affect everyone, and therefore, secondly: The fate of the Ukrainian Army must be decided by all the people of all countries – for this I am creating a social network UAR on the Ukrainian domain The army that belongs to me, under the howl of sirens that sound three times a day in Kiev, having part-time jobs from time to time, sometimes going hungry, because I’m a hundred domain addict, and I don’t have a list of about 20 domains that I really want to buy , but despite all this on UAR, I myself will not collect any money for the Ukrainian Army, and I will not allow anyone to do this there, so, if you are interested, and if you have the opportunity, look at the domain that I will indicate now after writing this post on this site, on which, as I already mentioned, I want to do a domain auction in the near future – it’s three-letter, I’m interested in the opinion of those present – will you consider it Premium? P.s. I indicated my email in contacts UAR (Ukrainian.Army).p

I would like to correct that China has not participated in Russia’s attack on Ukraine, and it is also actively mediating the conflict. Thank you.
Mark Thorpe says
Yeah right and I’m the President of the United States Lol
Jean Guillon says
Did you write that China is not contributing to helping russia in its invasion of Ukraine? You’re joking, right?
John says
You are not a simple domainer or domain name investor , what your thought more like politician , would you please discuss Ukrainian vs Russian at other political site as X or CNN ? Thx
Palinco says
Would you consider these as premium:
Hyruns.com, Pinneck.com, Byprofile.com
Name worth rated 1st tier with high values.
Interested, let me know.
Elex says
Actually its about the expertise, its about demand and supply and most importantly the marketing strategy, like how you can market the domain name as premium or brand, its all about marketing to right people, place and time
