Matt G.Southern published a piece yesterday on SearchEngineJournal.com that deals with Google and their opinion of cheap new gtlds.
- Avoid cheap TLDs. They attract spammers, which impacts search rankings.
- Matching keywords in your TLD doesn’t improve SEO.
- Consider branding and marketing, not just SEO, when choosing a TLD.
Google’s remarks came from a Search Relations Team podcast.
From the article:
In response to Mueller’s question about whether to use a more affordable domain like .xyz or invest in a more common one like .com, Illyes stated:
“My gut reaction is people should stay away from the cheapest TLDs, especially if they are free.”
It’s not lost on most that Google parent company Alphabet chose a .xyz.

If you’re running — or want to run — a profitable business, it’s Dotcom . . . or it’s DotDead.

XYZ is known as spam and malware. What’s surprised me they SEO is also a problem with it. That’s a major news.
When Google saying it, the problem is real.
