DNForum sent out some news this morning they are opening their marketplace for free users and they picked up Epik as a sponsor.
There is $25 worth of credit at Epik.com if active on DNForum.com within 14 days of this announcement. Exclusive members can claim $100 worth of credit at Epik.com if active on DNForum.com within 14 days of this announcement.
We have some exciting news to share with you.
First off, we are revamping the membership permissions and opening the marketplace for free users. This is being done in order to encourage more activity. We also believe it will increase engagement which also gets more eyeballs on the sales threads created by our lifetime members.
The new free program is made possible by a generous sponsorship from domain industry disruptor Rob Monster, who is Founder of Epik.com. In case you missed it, he and his team have been working tirelessly on initiatives to make the industry more prosperous for more people.
Going forward DNForum.com will have 4 different user account types. One free, and three lifetime paid memberships. Starting today, all accounts will have access to read and post in both marketplace and discussion sections
Our highly appreciated Gold, Platinum and Exclusive members will continue to have additional lifetime permissions to post more marketplace threads, have links in signature and promote their services. In the long run, you are what makes this community possible and we thank you for that!
Further we are very pleased to announce some new perks for both our existing and new paid members, which are summarized below. The expanded perks include a highly worthwhile incentive from our new sponsor, Epik.com, which I think many of you will appreciate.

By Epik giving out credits like this, means they must have an ownership stake in dnf, especially given the heat they have taken at namepros for flooding threads

Domain name forums are not what they used to be.
You’re better off reading domain blogs or domain tweets on Twitter IMO.
Rob Monster - Epik.com says
Mark,
That depends. If you want to hear the perspectives of an anointed few with highly curated commenting feeds, then yes, read and engage on blogs.
However, here is what you find on forums:
– New people coming to the industry trying to learn.
– People who are liquidating domains.
– People who are proposing new concepts and looking for feedback.
– Private messaging to people where you don’t have their emails.
So, I am going to disagree. I think the forums are as relevant as ever, especially for newcomers. For the geniuses of the industry who don’t want to give back, indeed nothing to see there.
So, enjoy the ivory tower — hope the view is great.
Mark Thorpe says
Good luck with your Epik army Rob, we will be watching you from above.

Isn’t that forum dead? Looks rather dead.
John says
I don’t spend a lot of time on the forums, but personally I love what I’ve seen Rob do there (at NP) and it’s extremely valuable for everyone. So I don’t know what anyone is griping about.
Many years ago at DNF I was really turned off by “appraisal” threads, had some trouble with someone well known and seemingly like a pea in a pod with the previous ownership, but who apparently hasn’t had a reputation for giving people grief for quite a long while now, etc. So I left. However, DNF is now so faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar removed from the previous ownership and all that old stuff that I’m perfectly happy to wade back in a bit and see what happens. And in all candor it’s also always nice to get a credit like that, a nice little nudge to dust off my old DNF account.
I only like regularly visiting four of the blogs now, but would not like if there were only one like that. It is DEFINITELY good to have more than one major forum option, just like the old days.
Charles says
John…
Major? DomainState has more active users that aren’t moderators. DNForum should have stayed exclusive, now it’s the same as namepros, domainstate, nameslot, domainelites, etc…
John says
I used to also occasionally use DomainState in “the old days” and in all candor was very underwhelmed. To the point where I stopped using it. Had a very memorable bad experience there too. I honestly do not even know if it even still exists anymore – which I could check if I wanted to – but that just shows you how it’s never mentioned anymore, at all, anywhere – ever. At least in my experience as someone who follows the industry every day and is a fairly prolific commenter in the blogs much of the time.
Charles says
Just what we need, another NamePros clone. The only thing that made DNForum unique is now gone and all the newbs/spammers can fill up DNForum news feed now. Ugh, way to ruin a good thing Rob
Michele says
Wasn’t it on DNForum that a lot of us paid for lifetime membership? I detect no reason to do anything there again.
Charles says
Michele…
Yea, a lifetime membershp that is now free for newbs. I wish they made a change taht didn’t devalue our paid memberships and crowd it with garbage.
Charley says
Did anyone receive their Epik credit after sending the email?

Quick comments here:
– Epik is a sponsor of both NamePros and DNForum. We are also the main sponsor of DomainGraduate.com, a free online course for domaining, as well as NameInvestors.com, a free widget dashboard for finding available names. These initiatives are all about helping folks buy good names at good prices, and then achieving successful exits.
– When it comes to the domainer community, our general approach is not to make a margin on domain acquisition or renewals. If there is margin, it is on the exit, e.g. marketplace sales and leases plus the future of annuity of a retail customer gained when a domainer sells or leases a domain. It is a longer game, but it is capital efficient and has the ability to empower many.
– We do not have an ownership stake in NamePros or DNForum. We do own DomainGraduate.com and NameInvestors.com. I expect DNF will continue its historical approach to forum moderation, i.e. a light touch and focused mainly on removing crooks from the community.
– Our offer of an engagement incentive for DNF is simply what I call for “honey for the bee” to encourage folks to engage there and to co-create something useful. I am also advocating for reconciliation between DNF and NamePros as I find any lingering animosity there to be unproductive.
– In the meantime, all of the claimed engagement incentives have been credited to the accounts that submitted requests. The claim period will end on February 12 so legacy DNF members are encouraged to engage on DNF and claim their Epik account credit.
– As for Charles saying a good thing got ruined, give it a rest, the site was a ghost town. It needed a kick in the butt to get moving again. If you have constructive ideas for the DNF management, by all means share those ideas. If you want exclusive threads, I am sure there will be plenty of scope for that.
