Xiaomi founder, on the importance of a domain name

January 27, 2020 by Raymond Hackney

Xiaomi Corporation is a Chinese electronics company founded by Lei Jun in 2010 and headquartered in Beijing.

Lox posted a link to a video of the founder of Xiaomi on the importance of domain names.

Kassey Lee added:

Well said, but Xiaomi is not easy to pronounce outside China so it’s not globally oriented. That explains why they shelled out $3.6m to acquire Mi.com as its corporate domain in 2014.

“Well said, but Xiaomi is not easy to pronounce outside China ” Disagree.
Xiaomi is easy to pronounce even if the pronunciation is is not China centric, Xiaomi is now a superstrate
brand term. I had never heard of Mi com brand relationship with Xiaomi
Superstrate words will ultimately be two way east & west generics e.g. 247 – 24×7 – blockchain – cyber

You may be able to pronounce it, but how many people can spell it?

As voice recognition is taken up by the public, not as much of an issue unless people can’t pronounce it.

Outside of China, Xiaomi is just mi.com.

Xiao Mi translates to little grain (of rice), and Xiao is also a popular middle name.

I think Kassey is right. People in my country often can’t pronounce “Xiaomi,” they sometimes say “Shomi” or “Shaomi.” MI.com was a good acquisition for them but they don’t seem to use it properly on their commercial campaigns, which is not wise for them.
