Who would you choose?

January 20, 2020 by Raymond Hackney

Domain Name Aftermarket

Someone posed this question to me yesterday, “If you could only list at one aftermarket marketplace which would it be?”

In this hypothetical the exclusivity that a BrandBucket demands would be in place for every marketplace.

My vote would be GoDaddy/Afternic under this hypothetical example. So many people outside the business associate domain names with GoDaddy.

I said to the person who asked me that I thought most would lean that way due to their visibility. He disagreed, he thought that the DAN’s and EPIK’s of the world are making great strides.

Of course looking at current options those players have some advantages. Lower commission, crypto can be used for payments, payment plans.

While I agree with that, I said it was his hypothetical that the voter could only choose one. I think if it came down to one, GoDaddy is who most people will vote for. That’s just my opinion.

In this hypothetical example who would you choose?

DAN, for reasons you mentioned in the post, godaddy has higher commission, no crypto payment option or payment plans.

I would choose Afteric (where most of my sales come from). They will list your domains on GoDaddy for you

Afternic. In fact, I am leaving BrandBucket because I fear I am missing out on sales at Afternic/GoDaddy.

Afternic is good with buy it nows the new sales team has little talent and just don’t get back to you with feedback from pricing they requested. I actually have been testing the buy side to see how proactive they are and there is really no escalation to make anything happen.Godaddy really should be doing some quality testing. Domain buy services is boarderline corrupt ,one of the salesman cost me a 3500 sale by suggesting hand reg domains that had dropped with the same category I was selling,I’m leaning on sending everything to uni nameservers and let them do their thing,Also the 20 percent fee is undeserved and steep , Some sales I made were directed right to escrow.com sale page but a lot of false buys ,there should be some kind of verification or a nominal charge to fill out a form. Namesilo has a nice marketplace that makes it easy for a buyer to just click buy it now, I bet reasonable priced bin would do best here.

Afternic…for its huge exposure and GoDaddy trust factor!

BIN on Afternic do not display the BIN prices so we don’t know whether the domains were sold at that BIN prices that I quoted.
SEDO’s BIN display the BIN prices.

    GoDaddy/Afternic.

They have by far the largest market share. That is where the most buyers are.

Afternic, the only platform with real distribution.

I would have to agree that GoDaddy is likely the best aftermarket. I do not like SEDO for various reasons.

    Uniregistry Market.

The platform was upgraded a couple of months ago (Project Dynamo) and is fun, fast and sophisticated. The brokerage team is really good.

    In 2019 I sold 31 domains there for $85,395.

Domain names are one of kind, so keeping this rare factor front and center, the more marketplaces you list your domain names at, the more desperate I see you as a seller.

You may look at it as being accessible and you don’t want to miss your chance at a buyer…. well, I think that you want to avoid all “marketplaces” and simply have a professional represent your domain name for sale and maximize it when the chance arises.

Interested parties will visit the domain name directly and this is the key source to manage and sell your domain. If somebody trusts GoDaddy and the domain isn’t listed “for sale” with them, GD does a good job at pushing its buy service. Then, the buyer service is left to deal with a sales professional at only ONE source. Clicking a BIN is easy, negotiating leaves you as the seller in the drivers seat.

IMO, the very BEST brokerage team and service is Uniregistry Brokerage! Yes, I consult for the company but I choose to do this for a reason. The domain industry defaults to GoDaddy & Sedo who force you to BIN price your domains to be included. The sales teams at these services are not the best. Uni has proven that their median sales price is the best in the industry and that is because they have a proven system and experienced brokerage team to make the sales happen. They are hustlers and deal makers.

I monitor a lot of domain name sales and the key that I see is to funnel interest to one place and have a true professional service handle every aspect of your sale and make them earn the commission and make the sale for you. It is vital that you use the sales landers available to you, one that is handled in a proven system that somebody can get on the phone and maximize deals. I truly believe the best overall option is using the full system offered by Uniregistry Brokerage.

Afternic, you can’t compete with the distribution they have.

Afternic, only because they are owned by GoDaddy and their domains show up in GoDaddy’s domain search.
Sedo is second best. Quicker payouts than GoDaddy/Afternic.

I can’t speak highly enough about GD/Afternic. marketplace and brokerages
Entire teams, brokers and support, at GD/Afternic are super. smart, responsive, customer-centric
And brokers Brian Cowan, at GD, Rich Green at Afternic are STELLAR and nice people

When are they going to remove the word “Afternic’
    It ruins the homepage
    GODADDY wording all the way

  20. Dave Tyrer says

I have already sold three domains at Uni this year. One was for $10,000.

Because the buyer clicked the Buy Now button, I was only charged 10 percent commission. So I made an extra $1,000 compared to a 20 percent commission.

To note, if a buyer chooses the “submit enquiry” option under my setup, that activates the brokerage to step in and handle the negotiations. Then, the commission rises to 15 percent. Most of my sales involve one of the brokers so my average commission is probably about 14 percent.
