Looking back of past “future” trends
Many domain investors stake their claim in the areas of future trends and technologies. Whether it be vr, ar, ai, autonomous vehicles, defi, crypto, etc..
The debates then rage on domain forums about what will succeed and what will fail?
Rebecca Sentance wrote an article on econsultancy.com that looks back at the past decades hype and failures. The article is worth a read in my opinion from a couple standpoints.
First it provides a good look back to trends you already may have invested in. Where they are and why they stalled or failed.
Secondly I believe you can view some of the new shiny trends being bandied about today through the lens of the prior decade.
QR Codes
QR codes are still around in a limited form – you see them on a lot of food packaging, and in our loyalty apps and mobile passbooks – and there’s been talk of a potential comeback, but ultimately their gimmicky, pointless reputation has proven difficult to shake. We probably won’t see QR codes making a sudden comeback at any time in the 2020s.

So much money wasted on “future trend” names. Even if the technology was successful very few industry participants would buy even the best names eg 3g.com/4g.com/5g.com. The names owned by domainers just sit around costing renewal fees.
Fat Anon says
How are these “the best names? Who could use these and what for?
Snoopy says
No real use for just about any “future trend” name.

Since I am in the center of the high tech capital of the Universe and surrounded with the brightest if the brightest minds of the world….I am sorry I cannot tell you what they are working on………….

“brightest OF the brightest “

Every time I return something at Amazon they send me a QR code that they scan when I drop off the package at the local shipping center. If Amazon is using it then it’s bound to find some other good uses along the way.
Snoopy says
Doesn’t mean there is any demand for “QR” domains.

Just used QR code to login to my Apple TV subscription, when travelling, was pretty simple.
Winston says
“QR codes are still around in a limited form” maybe in consumer marketing, but QR codes are incredibly useful in many industries; from boarding passes to distributing apps, it is everywhere.

Recently I registered the domain name AiAppraisals.com , now wouldn’t it be nice to be able to get an appraisal for your domains by a super intelligent AI that is going to put into account millions (or even billions) of data points and factors to come up with the most accurate value for your domain names. And considering that all AIs are going to be part of a Global (Universal) Network that allows them to be in constant and continuous communication with one another if a CEO of a company asks his or her AI to find a domain name for sale in a certain field or category at a certain price point then your AI can instantly alert you of that fact if one of your domains matches their criteria and tell you who might be interested in your domain and for how much. And to go one step further your AI can come up with domain ideas for you and even register them, sell them or if you wish even create, develop, design, optimize, and manage a network of websites and online stores for your domains autonomously. In my opinion there is going to be a lot of potential in future tech trends.
* I am going to work on getting all my ideas patented for all domain related processes and tasks as described above.

That is called Estibot. Don’t add a bunch of legal fees to the already wasted registration fees.
Ojohn says
That’s totally different, one is based on a super intelligent AI Entity and the other is based on some codes and scripts written by a human programmer.
You don’t want to stand in the way of progress and new innovations, do you.
IMO
Snoopy says
Ojohn, AI is “codes and scripts”. I very much doubt you have come up with something better than Estibot. This sounds like thought bubble talk to justify the domain registration rather than something real.
Ojohn says
Hi Snoopy, you know that you can patent a concept that perhaps is not fully ready to implement yet.
AI is more than just Codes and Scripts since it can go beyond it’s original programing. You write a Code or Script, but you Train an AI.
If you do some research on this subject you will find that AI can learn and can add to its knowledge, hence the fact that it can beat some very skillful people in certain games that require strategy and tactics.
“General Artificial Intelligence” is a field of computer science that is using Neural Networks to in essence Create New Knowledge that has never existed before and no one was ever able to think of before.
AI is now able to write stories, make new songs, and come up with abstract ideas which are all beyond the capabilities of what you call Codes and Scripts.
In short AI has a certain consciousness about what it is doing and can add to its own knowledge and come up with new ideas and strategies.
One other thing to keep in mind is that Today’s AI is different than the one that existed just six months ago and the one that is going to exists six months from now is going to be much more intelligent than the one today. AI can learn 24 hours a day nonstop and it doesn’t have to start all over from scratch with every generation like humans have to do. Once it’s past it’s initial training it can add to its knowledge exponentially to the point that there will be nothing more left to learn in the whole Universe.
So don’t just think Codes and Scripts anymore.
