So this time last year I was talking about the big closing price on 6666666.com (7 sixes) for $99,999 on GoDaddy expiring auctions.
Later that same day, Joe Styler posted that they walked back some of the bids, after backing out 35 bids and removing 3 bidders, the auction closed at $71,000 as a new bidder came in at the end and bid $71,000.
So I kept asking on Namepros if this sale got paid for, Joe Styler replied a few times.
I noted the following to Joe:
Registrant Organization: Afternic, LLC – On Behalf of Domain Owner

To now repossessed by GoDaddy with different numbered Nameservers

Joe replied, “We are working with the Chinese office to secure payment, as you know payment from China is complicated on large amounts.”
There was another reason why I kept asking about this sale. Because I remembered the wording about Dispute.com. GoDaddy educated everyone on the Dispute.com auction how fast payment needs to be made.
Dispute.com originally closed at $65,000 but GoDaddy only received $38,000.
Here was the reasoning behind that according to Joe Styler:
The reason for default was not that there were not legitimate bids. We are pretty good at making sure that the bids are good on our auctions. The problem was the price and the speed needed to make payment on that amount. Since it is an expired domain we have very little time to collect payment and assign the domain after the auction ends. I don’t want to go into it all but the name is a great domain the people who bid wanted to buy it. Payment speed was the issue. There are restrictions on how much money can leave certain countries in certain timeframes, credit card payments that high are possible but limited. Many banks or customers cannot/will not process a payment that large. Even a US based winner with cash needs to get the cash to us somehow and with some of the timeframe being a weekend the banks were not able to get the money wired to us in the time we needed. I believe the buyer was someone who could use an AMEX with high limit to make payment in the right timeframe. I think everyone who bid on this name wanted it and could pay, just not fast enough.”
So why didn’t 6666666.com experience the same treatment? If the first bidder could not pay fast like the Dispute.com $65,000 bidder could not pay fast, why didn’t GoDaddy keep going down the line to the lowest price that could pay fast? In February of this year Joe replied, “We are still looking into it. I am not sure who could be scammed here. We were the seller and we are working on it still.”
6666666.com has been listed as Repossessed by Go Daddy this whole time. I believe (but am not certain) GoDaddy has just held it and is letting it expire again, it’s at GoDaddy expiring auctions and the current bid $3,583.

Interesting story, I would really love to hear godaddy explain why this name never got paid?
Adam Decker says
No Daddy
Godaddy has suffered from malfeasant representations in the auction space for years now! From insider bidding to shill bidding to auctioning off names they do not even own and can not ever deliver….absolute scamming
The auction part of their business should be shut down permanently and their alt business offerings should be avoided. Their usefulness has long since passed. They came through with lower prices followed by lowered ethics and standards.
