Things are back to heating up in the crypto domain space. Crypto.com sold, Coins.com even a name like EthEx.com closing for over $9,000 at NameJet.
Crypto.com is being rumored to have sold for $12 million, Elliot Silver posted an article where a writer at Cheddar quoted the price.
Coins.com sold for seven figures.
Which name would you want for your brand in the cryptocurrency space?
Which do you prefer?

Coins.com, but Crypto.com is a close second.
Coin.com would be the best choice, of course.
But Coins.com is 1A and Crypto.com is 1B IMO.
Most domainers will not agree with me because Coins.com is plural.
But the average person does not care that Coins.com is plural. They would trust Coins.com over Crypto.com. Trust is key online.
Ari says
Mark, I agree with you on coins.com being more valuable than crypto.com, however curious on singular coin.com being more valuable than the plural? When I look at others in the consumer space like hotels.com, cars.com, homes.com, apartmentrentals.com, etc… They are all in the plural indicating a larger universe of multiple of each of those items. I suppose if coin.com represented a singular crypto coin offering called “coin” that could be more appropriate. I am no expert on domain valuations however curious on your thoughts? 4 letters vs 5?
Mark Thorpe says
Personally, I like Coins.com better than Coin.com. But in domainerland now, plural domains are not as valuable as non-plural domains. You can partially thank auction houses for plural domains falling out of favor. They prefer not to list plural domains anymore.
China entering the domain market did not help plural domains either. Mose Chinese domain Investors prefer non-plural domains as well.
Mark Thorpe says
I still think Bitcoin.com domain name is more valuable than Crypto.com, with Coin.com and Coins.com being more valuable than both Bitcoin.com and Crypto.com
jonathan says
Mark,
You illustrated things very well and are knowledgeable, but as Ari said above, hotels.com, cars.com, apartments.com, vacationrenatls.com, etc….all plural. ALL OF THEM.
If the domain we’re being sold to “domainers” then perhaps current trends might apply (or not), but this is about consumers and branding….and from that standpoint I see this as an overall win for coins.com, but I condition that win with regard to a mass market & consumer play.
From the sound of things, it seems you agree.

I voted for Crypto.
Crypto is the entire cryptocoin/cryptocurrency industry.
Coins, tokens, wallet, ico etc. all fall under the entire “crypto” umbrella. Imo.
I believe “crypto” is the single most valuable keyword at this point in our lives right now.
If Crypto.com sold for 12 million last week as was reported i still believe that was very cheap for the amounts of money that are made daily in cryptocurrency now. These Companies are making billions in ICO funding and investment funding. Yes Billions with a “B”. Some of them have not created anything yet and all they have is a nice promise in message, a pretty website on a crappy domain, and a simple BS filled twitter page.
Imagine becoming the authority in the crypto space overnight by spending 100 million on that domain. Very easy to spend that money when your warchest is overflowing already and which will most likely generate you 100x or 1000x ROI.
I am quickly off point here but i really believe crypto.com is so much better than coins.com.
One more thing, i bet we will see crypto.com change hands again in the next year or 2. Still so much upside in that domain name. New owners will be able to add another 0 to a future sale imo.

Crypto – Cyber are international cognitive generics. Respectfully North American think only in English /Latin not Hindi – Pinyin ultimately the future will be continents competing working for the Yankee dollar was never sustainable What Is ?
John says
Quite frankly, this is an easy one in my view.
Consumers / average “joe” = Coins.com
cryptocurrency enthusiasts and speculators = Cryto.com
I actually don’t see them addressing the same group. Coins.com can target the 99%, whereas Crypto.com will always be relevant to a small fraction of the population.
Jonathan says
I see this comparison rather clearly in terms of brand:
Coins.com = consumer / mass market (99% of the population)
Crypto.com = cryptocurrency enthusiasts and speculators (1% of population, if that).
Two completely different target markets and both valuable for those very reasons. I just can’t see crypto.com being trusted and accepted as a consumer brand.
Jonathan says
Coins = fiat values
Bitcoin / BCT / ETH = Crypto
$12m generic wounder what Cyber – CyberSecurity / CyberAnquan is valued at @
Steve B says
Coins for a few reasons:
– Nearly everyone in the world knows what a coin is.
– Coins has multiple uses/industries.
– Coins holds value regardless of the crypto industry.

Cryptocurrency.com (Crypto.com selling for $25m Means Cryptocurrency.com is worth $100,000,000)
Mark Thorpe says
Maybe 10-15 years ago, but not anymore. Shorter the domain, the better now.
Snoopy says
Coin seems to be always used in singular form in the space even if you have multiple it is still 568 bitcoin. Inititial coin offer, where is it used in plural?
Mike says
The hands down winner is coins.com
Let me explain
Amazon has app “coins”, bumble uses in app “coins”, every game I play on my phone and online uses coins as in app currency. Coins ARE digital currency. More than bitcoin and more than every other digital currency out there’s
Coins.com has the propensity and brand to mint on platform coins that can be used by consumers on all respects. From that standpoint alone coins.com is a homerun and is not just better than crypto.com but rather is in its best light a 9 figure brand (or even a billion dollar brand in the right hands).
This is not even close. Coins.com by a mile

“crypto.com selling for $25m Means Cryptocurrency.com is worth $100,000,000)”
Did Crypto.com really sell for 25 million? I heard it was 12 million. So I guess the professor, the former owner, and his Missus will sail sail away — forget about tenure 🙂
Snoopy says
Until it is verified is won’t mean anything. The new owners appear to be trying to get publicity for the sale to promote themselves so there is huge incentive to overstate, it’s akin to the new tlds sales right now.
Let’s see some real proof of the sale not made up stuff and rumours.
Josh says
I like the name that works the best to reach your audience. Comparing them for the same space (crypto) then yes clearly crypto.com. I am still some what leaning coins.com for the bigger use (markets) but time will tell if crypto lasts as a competitor!
astrid says
josh, what do you mean by “markets” ? just wanted some clarification.
i agree with your assessment overall btw. Coins.com for the mainstream is superior.

I voted for CRYPTO.COM, i own many crypto domains,it makes more sense and directly describes the world of cryptocurrencies, whereas coins can mean something other than cryptocurrency

Coin.com is better than Coins.com
That said, I would probaly prefer Crypto.com – It is much more applicable to other verticals.
Cryptography
Encryption
Cryptocurrencies
Crypto
etc
Coins is nice but is locked in to crypto coins or literally coins we carry in our pocket.
Maurice says
coins.com is better because it can literally create digital coins.
Arielle Bowse says
Coins.com is ideal for the mainstream person. Super strong.
Crypto is much too dark ! Can you see your grandmother go buy something at crypto.com ??!!
Roger Stein says
Coins is the better.
Coinbase, coinmarketcap, cointelegraph, bit”coin”, coindesk, etc all the most popular company’s in the digital currency industry. Not one major company has the word crypto in it (as far as I know).
There’s a reason these company’s are not cryptobase, crytomarkrtcap, crytotelegraph, crytodesk etc…it’s becaue the word crypto is “off putting” to most people.
