Google’s new .App domain extension looks like a big winner.
After posting over 3,000 registrations in the Sunrise Period which was open to just to trademark holders; .APP generated over $1.7 Million in Early Access (EAP) Fees in its first 2 days and added over 700 registrations in day 3 of EAP.
The prices varies by registrar but using $1,100 as a day 3 EAP amount puts Google’s EAP haul after 3 days at over $2.5 Million plus the registration fees.
Day 4 of EAP started at noon EST today.
We know Google paid $25 Million for the extension .App which through day 3 of EAP now has over 4,100 registrations many of which have premium pricing

Colin campbell says
I think this demonstrates the value of generic tlds with meaning like .shop, .club, .app.
Congrats to Google and the domain team on a successful launch.
Matt says
I thought apps didn’t need domain names?
Listen,….there is only ONE extension.
.COM
Aaron Strong says
Progressive Web Apps (PWA) need domains…You can “Google” it.
adios says
PWA
Pros
add your site to the users home screen
push notifications
no need for app store
market via url
Cons
You need to implement a service worker, WTH , does that mean its dependent on third party google?
Years ago we had a script to add to home screen but now we need PWA to do it!?
disclosure: I will be implementing pwa and see where that goes.
VR says
I think people like Colin Campbell would disagree there is only one extension, well actually everyone who is not a .com investor would disagree.
Aaron Strong says
Google’s once a year developers conference coincides with the end of EAP and the beginning of general availability. Coincidence?…We shall see..
Aaron Strong says
For those interested:
Tuesday May 8th 4-5 pm Stage 6
“Introducing .app domain names, and how to secure them”
“.app, the web’s first secure-only open top-level domain (TLD) for mobile apps and developers, is launching on May 8. This in-depth technical talk covers use cases for .app domain names, HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS), best practices for secure website development, and the unique security benefits of .app domains thanks to TLD-wide HSTS.”
Richard says
The next ,mobi… History really repeats itself.
.app is certainly better than .mobi ever was but still no resale value. Google will make money, domainer will lose their shirt. follow the money, stick to .com
Jamie says
I received three ‘Your items have been cancelled’ emails today. Expected it. I like. app it fits with the emerging technology and younger generation. All the other ridiculous extensions really needs to be deleted. .Rocks… really?
cmac says
i hope its not mostly domainers buying these. if so they will be holding for a long time most likely.
Bill Kara says
This gtld is different…
First its unique in that is secure by default and will have the least spam malware sites most likely due to the cert requirements. The fact its backed by google and this year at google io its going to go wide release is going to be nuts. No gtld has had anything remotly close to the push this is about to get.
In a week 100k plus devs will be told about dot app first hand, its going to be insane. Not sure how any domain investors could have missed this…
blackjack.app for 2500 and 200 a year…. nuts…
Aaron Strong says
I agree. Lots of opportunity on this one. I grabbed Cryptos (.)app…
Brad Mugford says
“This gtld is different…”
I have heard that time and time again. Typical excitement when an extension launches, then crickets afterwards.
Brad
Bill Kara says
You’ve heard, but its never been different. This one is actually technically different due to its security requirements and the effects that will have on consumer perception, along with the backing of a internet giant like google.
Thats why it is different.
PS I got solitare.app for 2500 also… the rest even cheaper. It’s crazy you guys are nuts to be on the sidelines of this….
blue.app
black.app
xo.app
….
cmac says
same thing the mobi people said. microsoft, telus, etc were backing it.
i own a bunch of keywordapp.com domains and while I get lots of offers most want to pay next to nothing.
Bill Kara says
Telus was backing who? Telus known by 30m people in Canada. Google is a household name. Mobi was stupid and people still made money off it. The play here is the extension, backers, security … it’s not just having the word ‘app’.
Ryan says
Bill your trying to defend your investment with blind eyes, I know a few big keyword app .com owners, and things were good from 2010 to 2015 then it got cold, this is just hype, no differnt that .games, etc… at the end of the day consumers are still not accepting them, and the premiums do not make them investment grade. I know their are google fan boys on this, but look at the keyword app .com sales, they will give you indication on where this is going.
Good for you buying in, but don’t lead other sheep to the slaughter, you are talking down Rob Monster for his .city investment fund, You are a hypocrite!
RaTHeaD says
love telephone.app. Imagine being able to download an app that lets you make calls from your phone.
Aaron Strong says
LOL.
Alan says
Are you guys opting for regular or priority pre-registration?
Bill Kara says
Uni, just buy it outright, auctions suck
Alan says
Wow, had no idea you could buy outright on Uni. I thought it was impossible to buy outright during the pre-public phase. How come GoDaddy doesn’t offer outright buy option?
Aaron Strong says
They do. You need to go to the current phase (day), add it to cart and then checkout…Boom Its yours.
Bill Kara says
You’re comparing dot city to dot app? I posted the reasons why they are different if you can’t understand the difference of google backing a gtld to whoever does dot city I can’t help you.
As for my investment I spent 15-20k and about 1.5k a year. Even one sale and I’m good. Blackjack.app alone will pay back the investment. Or black.app or one of the others…
Mark my words right here. Google will promo these big at google io and it will be larger than every gtld marketing campaign combined 100x.
You guys have no idea just how big and how much push google has… I’ll let you know the buzz from IO it will be a lot of fun I’m heading there Sunday…
You messed up not buying
Richard says
You’re wrong and your “investment” will likely be a total loss.
Sorry to break it to you but apps are already dead. Google is 2 years behind the curve with this TLD.
https://www.techcrunch.com/2017/08/25/majority-of-u-s-consumers-still-download-zero-apps-per-month-says-comscore/amp/
Mobile web applications are what the consumer wants and they run on .com and .com only.
Bill Kara says
Wow you really believe that ppl no longer installs apps on their phones?
You realize these can be mobile websites or full on websites right?
Please , please use some independent thought don’t just be a spoon feed ‘news’ drone. If you really think no one is installing apps anymore I want to introduce you to something even better than domain… you see I found these magic beans and …
Richard says
I will leave the ”believing“ to the people of faith. I quote facts and facts are 95% of all Iphone users download less than 1(!) per month.
”You realize these can be mobile websites or full on websites right?“
wrong. please educate yourself about the difference. Your app domains are worthless.
Bill Kara says
You read it on the interent so it must be true!
Did you know Hilary Clinton is a secret Russian spy that wants to take all our guns away? Fact, cause someone wrote it.
Anyhow random Richard… you stick with 4 word dot coms you’ll be fine.
Luke says
Richard I think you might have missed the point about deep linking into apps and that the fact that people don’t download apps anymore, plays perfectly into the hands of .app.
Richard says
It’s Hillary Clinton you fool and why did you change the topic to politics anyhow? app store applications are dead, and your .app domains are as worthless as the many failed new gTLD’s before. Sad.
cmac says
I don’t know what renewals are like for .app but if you are paying 500/year this kind of investment is generally not good for domainers. i can renew almost 60 .com’s for that.
as for google being such a huge backer because they own it, you do realize google owns other gltds and they’ve done basically nothing to promote them.
if it pays off for you great but so far new gtld investments haven’t really paid off for those who got involved.
Alan says
Besides .app, Google also owns .how, .soy, .minna, and soon .dev. Out of them all, .app stands out big time. And Google realizes that too. Pretty sure they couldn’t care less about their other gTLDs, hence no promotion.
Arun says
How to get access to .app domain before may 8th ? Where to register for that and whats the early access register fee?
thanks
Bill Kara says
Everything I got was 200 a year or less to renew. Most were 100~ .
The point is names like blue.app, xo.app, Black.app, solitaire.app for 1-2k plus feed is cheap. Those 2-3 day lists are gold. You can’t lose money snagging what was on those lists. In any event low hanging fruit is all but picked now.
cmac says
Let us know when you sell.
Richard says
”You can‘t lose money…“ ??
Bill Kara says
If you’re going to quote me at least hare the common sense to quote the entire thing. I know you so mad you missed this. It happens.
Aaron Strong says
There is a lot of technical misinformation being spun out there. To understand the potential of .app I encourage learning more about web apps (PWA), their rise, and why Google and all of big tech is behind this newer framework of internet development….You may want a .app after all…..
steve says
I’m not sure there will be much aftermarket for these names, unless of course, app developers desire the names to promote their apps, or if developers want develop.app, build.app, design.app, promote.app.
Also, what’s more valuable cryptpapp.com or crypto.app?
Who knows? Those who picked up super premium key words + app may do very well — all I know, I had one of the top ____app.com portfolios (over 50) and I sold about 20-25 — and these were keywords that were selling for 2350 USD for .app.
Having said all that, I still think it has great potential.
steve says
Typo above
meant Cryptoapp.com & Crypto.app
Ryan says
Sat forward 2014, all those guys like Phil Harris were here talking the talk, and now they are dropping the drop.
Been there done that, $500 renewals on most of the average stuff, it doesn’t end well for the lemmings ahh I mean domainers in the end.
Don’t follow Bill Kara he can afford to lose money, most others here cannot.
Bill Kara says
More false stuff by an uninformed fool… if you are going to post at least don’t be so lazy to actually go look at what the prices are.
Renewals except for day 1-2 were 100-200 for me. For a name like blackjack.app names like pink.app and blue.app 100 a year. Easy money. :$
Aaron Strong says
Added to my appfolio, at REGULAR renewal: Cryptos, Blockchains and Cybersecurity….Lots of gold left.
cmac says
I’d say those plurals don’t work.
Aaron Strong says
Well there isn’t one crypto and there isn’t one blockchain..It’s not a brand play so it works for me…Best regards.
Richard says
Don’t take domain advice from a guy who doesn’t know the difference between an app store application and a mobile web application.. Just don’t! ?
cmac says
If this guy is karamouzis then yeah he is on a whole other level financially.
DNPric.es says
Someone snatched roomi.app and likely it is not the popular roomiapp.com
