.App is a new gTLD domain extension which Google (GOOG) paid $25 Million for in a ICANN auction. .APP closed the Sunrise period that was open to trademark holders with over 3,000 registration.
.App went into day 1 of the Early Access Program (EAP) on Tuesday allowing early registration of domains for a one time extra fee. Fees as always very by registrar but day 1 pricing was around $12,000 for the EAP fee plus the cost of the domain.
Day 2 EAP dropped to over $3K plus the cost of the domain.
According to the zone file for .App there were 92 registrations on day 1 of EAP which is over $900,000 plus the cost of the domains. Many of the better generic domains I checked on including one letter domains were priced over $2K for registration and renew at that same price every year which is in addition to the EAP fee
Day 2 the zone file as of noon today reflects 266 registrations, but I know its not complete because one of the domains I applied for on day 2, which I didn’t get, is still not in the zone file.
270 registrations at $3K EAP is over $800,000 plus the registration fees.
Day 3 of EAP started at Noon EST today
For the record none of these were registered by myself or Worldwide Media

Yes, I picked up some. I should have purchased crypto.app which was available, I thought about it, and the next day it was “adios”.
One caveat: I’ve owned ____app.com for many of the .app domains that are selling for 2000 USD with 2000 renewals, and I’ve had few offers in over 10 years. I did sell several ____ app.com domains, but none higher than 20 K.
Who knows? This one, and .web are my favorites, but you never know. 100% of my sales are to end-users. My last sale to a domain investor — 2011.

Thanks for the list…Good to see you writing again MB.

I just ponied up on .app…..Privacy(dot)app..

Thanks Aaron

i wouldn’t use .app without the matching ____app.com, or risk bleeding of traffic, email, etc
can’t go wrong with the cheap renewal of ____app.com and the security that comes with .com over a premium .app with high renewal fees and no certainty
a non-premium .app is better, but again, i’d want the matching ____app.com for redirection or else risk data loss
Aaron Strong says
You mention “security”. That is why .app is the most secure extension. It runs only on HTTPS, unlike .com… This extension was built with security being a priority, unlike .com…Not to mention web apps is a very fast growing segment of internet development.
Snoopy says
Who cares, you can put a free SSL on anything. It is another .mobi.
Data Glasses says
LOL
ss says
>> Who cares, you can put a free SSL on anything.
exactly
>> It is another .mobi.
it’s worse because it’s owned by google 🙂
but seriously, with google the monopolist pushing it, .app will likely dethrone .io/.co/etc as the likely new preferred .com alternative, with .org still used for relevant orgs
>> .app is the most secure extension
.com is the most universal extension
an .app may have ssl, but it’ll still bleed traffic and potential sensitive email/etc to the .com equivalent
many web sites, usually without submission forms, don’t even require SSL and for the ones that do, SSL is of course readily available as snoopy mentioned above
>> web apps is a very fast growing segment of internet development
all web sites can become progressive web apps with a tiny bit of code, no .app needed
speaking of which, progressive web apps have the potential to further disrupt the downloadable app paradigm presently dominated by in part by monopolists like google
google’s play for .app makes total sense given their downloadable app store model is in jeopardy
support google’s effort to retain monopolistic power with .app, or just use a .com for your web app and leave google out of it, your call
regardless, my advice based on experience to anyone that’s developing a .app without the matching .com, at least also secure the _____app.com!
just some opinions from a developer that’s also bought/sold domains since the mid 90s
cheers
Aaron Strong says
I don’t disagree with a thing you said. However, I feel that clients (average internet user) will end up embracing .app due to the security issues being pushed by the big G…. Of course, I am biased now that I paid a chunk for one. Thank you for the conversation and best to you!
Jamie says
Well, I guess I’ll be receiving a refund for two of the .app’s I pre-registered for. I expect to see more ‘jokes on you, someone got your desired name articles.’ DAMM-IT TO HELL!!! There needs to be a petition to bring back the days of “first come first serve” or whatever the heck it is.
Snoopy says
Even keywordapp.com domains aren’t overly strong, Google has paid way too much for the string and has missed the peak by 2 years.
Raymond Hackney says
I do feel like they waited long, I mean I made keywordapp.com sales in 2014-2016 and have wondered if lately I should pick up some names keywordapp.com but wondered why someone allowed them to drop and no one else snapped them up. I could have picked up gamblerapp.com for $15 and then figured ehh, it’s not great but back when keywordapp.com was stronger it would sell for a decent profit.
They need to get away from the premium renewal fee, what happened to “Do no evil”
They paid a lot for .app now I know Google has spent more on other projects and scrapped them, but this something consumer facing that you are charging good money for, it’s one thing to shudder a product you gave me for free, it’s another thing when I am paying $2,000 a year.
So I do believe they will keep this extension running and market the hell out of it, $25 million is not the same to Google as it is to say an organization like .Club. They don’t need it to be successful, it will be interesting to see how this extension plays out. It would not surprise me to see strong uptake for the non premium, brandable names at least for the first couple years.
Luke says
It’s not doing evil, the premium price is preventing evil if you ask me. Preventing domainnamesales.com getting all of the good names and hogging them for a really ridiculous price just cause they have the leverage to do it.
Raymond Hackney says
Premium renewals are pure evil, I have dealt with them with .tv way before most here had their first domain registration.
Tony Roma says
Just another .dumb gtld. Can someone please wake me up when the new gtlds have all gone bust? Shouldn’t take too much longer since they all .suck.
steve says
I believe these .app domains could have value if you’re an app developer. But I’m not sure about aftermarket salel value. Of course, certain key words — especially crypto, coin, blockchain, BTC, sex, casino, bet, etc — seem to fetch nice prices in most extensions.
I still like .app, maybe because I used to develop a lot of apps. .
But .com is and always will be the gold standard.
I purchased a few .app domains, and was informed today one of the app domains I purchased had been put in another tier — and belonged to someone else. I’m not sure what happened — they reimbursed me. Maybe it’s just as well. I prefer .com domains anyway.
