A new startup with huge backing is launching under the new gTLD domain name Pocket.Watch
The startup with describes itself as a new kind of entertainment company:
“In today’s ever-expanding, shape-shifting entertainment universe, we’re planting a flag for kids.
A new kind of entertainment company, Pocketwatch is fresh, fast and exuberant — combining the vitality of today’s digital grassroots with the enduring power of classic, epic storytelling.
It’s for small-screen video and big-screen blockbusters, games, toys, and everything else kids love.
A daring outlet for creators and visionaries, Pocketwatch creates, acquires, distributes and curates content across many platforms. But more than anything Pocket.Watch is the entertainment headquarters kids have been waiting for.”

Good news, and an intelligent buy.

Wow!
Talk about a purely objective, big money validation that dot-com is no longer viewed as essential.
Sure they’ll eventually acquire the matching dot-com…but this seems like they’re making a definitive statement to the world about branding this company without constraints.

Your last sentence invalidates the one previous to it — you made me LOL ;0)

I do think “that they’ll eventually acquire the matching dot-com” – because they’ll be able to afford to do so. But I don’t think that they’re really concerned here with traffic leakage. And if someone tries to ride their coattails using the dot-com version, they’ll just file a UDRP.
But my initial statement is the main point, i.e., that, for certain businesses, dot-com is no longer ESSENTIAL.
While most domainers (including myself) still believe that dot-com is king and will remain so for years to come, this is one of those important case studies demonstrating that some (very) sophisticated end-users either don’t see it that way,…or, frankly, don’t care enough to think about the issue. And this, particular, case study should NOT be ignored, especially given the major investors & investments.
What the ‘dot-com or die’ crowd should start worrying about is that this becomes a frequent story line, or even a trend, rather than be just an aberration.

They likely have no clue what they are doing, though $6million funding isn’t a lot either.

Pocket.Watch sold last month for $6,800.
See Sold.Domains.
HIGHEST.DOMAINS says
For a such a perfect l.r combination a rather affordable price.
Nevertheless, with so many possibilities to create a domain today, this sale could also be seen as a (modest) hit.
A sale is always better now than (maybe) never.

It’s a bit like branding as “Rotary.Phone” only even more dated for their target audience.

(This was me posting but I discovered the wrong email present by some fluke, hence no polar bear. That is not my email, so was some kind of auto-fill anomaly.)

And on a side note, why is every single one of my comments put in moderation for days now even when there is no link? Did I do something? :-}
Raymond Hackney says
There have been no comments in moderation for days, all comments are now moderated and nothing automatically posts. Too much trolling and off topic comments.
John says
I meant that for days now all of my comments go straight to automation, which you have just pointed out there. Sounds like there’s no feature enabling you to whitelist specific people. Similar issue at some of the other blogs.

Pocket.Watch is a lot better than PocketWatch.com
The keywords span the dot perfectly.
Jamie says
Brand celebrity names, but is the entertainment and products worth it? Their names means nothing.

Pocket.Watch is a lot better than PocketWatch.com
com starting to look dated and old looking for sure.

I love it! Branding and marketing at its finest! The .watch extension plays so well in the entertainment arena! What are you going to .watch next?! 🙂 creative/marketing visionaries always a step ahead 🙂 my bet is they could care less about acquiring Pocketwatch.com
John says
Oh stop. And I don’t mean stop.watch, which some of their target audience might have actually heard of, though still doubtful…
