“The good, the bad and the ugly” An opportunity for readers to discuss what they like and don’t like about a particular company in the domain space.
Each post will deal with just one company, readers are encouraged to share their positive and negative experiences. Suggestions for improvement are also encouraged.
One of the goals of the column is that company representatives will see how their customers think of them. This can lead to a conversation on fixing problems.
What is not allowed:
- Personal attacks on individuals at the chosen company
- Promoting a competitor
- Posting domains for sale
The company in the spotlight today is Dynadot
Headquarters: San Mateo
Joe says
The Good: Dynadot read that it was a good marketplace.
The Bad: It depends on Godaddy and Afternic and the same.
The Ugly: There are many equals like Dynadot, too many to my understanding.
David says
Ugly Dynadot: Dynadot do NOT register domains straight away!!!
You register domain names @ Dynadot and they will still be unregistered and left for ANYONE to register more than 24 HOURS LATER!!!
Every single time you register domains @ Dynadot you have to then contact them directly to ask permission to register domains. EVERY TIME!
Absolutely NOT user friendly or domainer friendly!
Totally unbelievable that Dynadot does NOT register the domains straight away in 2019 !!
Kevin says
All good experiences with Dynadot. I like their UI.
Steven says
Bad: the minimum spend requirement in order to backorder drops. Doesn’t make sense. I would easily hit the minimum spend if they actually caught even 2% of the names I backorder, but they don’t, so I don’t want to freeze up $500 or more in dynadot account credit since they don’t catch enough names to actually spend it each year..
Samuel L Dotson says
The only requirement to place a backorder with us that you have spent money in the last 365 days. So the minimum cash amount is only around $2.00.
Regards,
Samuel L Dotson
Zafiris says
No such requirement ! Everybody can backorder with a minimum spent of 1$ or 2$ spent last year. you just have to click “THAT I WILL PAY IN CASE OF DROPCATCH” and you are ready !!

I tried a number of times but could not get the two factor authorisation to work, other than that I think a good registrar. Support seems good as well.
Dynadot says
We would be happy to help you with the two factor authorisation issues you have had. Can you email us at info@dynadot.com and we’ll look into it for you?
Thanks,
Team Dynadot

i love dynadot except the down for maintenance that happens seemingly daily at any given time.
Robert says
The Good: Good quality domains in the auctions. Sedo and Afternic MLS integration. Very competitive pricing for both registration and backorder. 2 Factor Authentication. Very responsive chat support (although not always very helpful)
The Bad: Very few backorders actually get caught. Very limited bulk tools. Some pages load incredibly slowly (watchlist especially). No ability to sell domains in auction, only marketplace.
The Ugly: The minimum spend requirements. No autopay with credit card (must manually enter everytime). No easy way to refund on auctions that get renewed by buyers, only account credit.

Dynadot called me a paki
That’s racist isnt it?

Good: Customer Service
Bad: Bulk Pricing minimums
Ugly: Frequently Down for Maintenance
Kevin says
I use and have used Dynadot for quite a while and I’ve been quite satisfied with them and have never had any issues there. (Prices could always be lower. imo.) However…, I do wish there was a feature that would sort their new gTLDs, alphabetically. That would save ‘hours’ looking thru a (ever changing) jumbled list, just to find the one you’re looking for.
Dynadot says
We do have an alphabetical sort for all of our TLDs on this page: https://www.dynadot.com/domain/tlds.html?sort=0
We agree – it’s getting more difficult to find the ones you’re looking for as the list grows. We hope that helps!
Best,
Team Dynadot

The Good: Dynadot is one of the best registrars. They are so domainer friendly. Great customer support. Often their prices are lower than those offered by other domainer-friendly registrars. Simple, powerful and easy-to-use UI. Working with them is always pleasure.
The Bad: They pay via account credit only.
Zafiris says
GOOD: Excellent Registrar !!! Strongly recommend. I have accounts in other registrars but prefer Dynadot at any case. Great support, quick response and to the point when needed. competitive bulk pricing although they could run some coupon promotions (especially for .com they never do) more often.
BAD: Nothing to mention
UGLY: Search option by character count in marketplace and auctions should give the possibility to choose 4 characters and not only 4 to 6 character range (you get too many results and must “train” your eyes to filter them). Payouts are only in dynadollars and not cash and sometimes are forgotten (I guess it is manual procedure…)
Vishal says
Good: Nice, Clean UI. New / Renewal / Transfer prices are almost same. Not like 1st year $5 then keep paying renewal fee $15 each year. Better place for IDN.
Bad: Nameserver, Parking and DNS setting. They are bit confusing to me. No save button. No update message. DNS keeps showing error for mandatory A record.
Ugly: Nothing.
Dynadot says
Thank you to everyone who posted feedback for us – and to The Domains for doing the post in the first place! We just wanted to say thank you for all the good, bad, and even ugly feedback. We are taking a look to see what we can do to improve based on your responses and hopefully we can make things even better for you in 2017!
Benny says
The expired domains issue where auction winners aren’t refunded, but only receive account credit when the owner renews- is hijacking people’s money. They paid for one thing, then Dynadot keeps the money hostage. Dynadot- you should really change that. That’s a very bad business practice.
Sameh says
The Bad: If you purchase an expired domain at their marketplace and that domain got renewed, they don’t refund the original payment method however they refund the money as account credit. Not fair and doesn’t make sense.
Keep in mind that 95% of the domains I like and I bid on DynaDot get renewed by the same owner (Jason Newby).
Also, if you won an expired domain and it’s finally transferred to your account. The whois info will stay locked for two weeks with DynaDot info (Pending Renewal or Deletion) not your whois info.
Andy says
After dynadot take your money and don’t register the domains, even after asking them to, dyndot then keep your money for days…
Dynadot is one of the worst domain companies.
