The question in the above headline is being asked on Namepros and quite a debate is breaking out.
Some say business is business and think it’s fine, while others feel that the convention has no moral obligation to anyone.
On the flipside some are appalled and find the name in bad taste. NamesCon being the premier event in the industry does not need this kind of attention and some feel it’s another example of why people look at the domain industry in a negative manner.
I do know watching movies that I have seen in the theater or on HBO, that the word retarded gets bleeped by basic cable networks.
As someone who taught tennis for Special Olympics for a number of years, the word does evoke a great deal of emotion for families and friends of the athletes, as I feel it should. I would not take the name for free and would not want to see it being highlighted at an industry event but I don’t make those calls.
I do however think that censorship with domain names becomes a slippery slope, it’s a big world and a lot of words offend many different individuals.
So what do you think ?
P.S. Currently the poll on Namepros has 29 votes with 16 thinking the name is ok to be auctioned.
Eric says
NO. It should not.
Its now and always has been an offensive and socially unacceptable term.
Its brings stigma, shame and incredible emotion to many families and people who suffer from intellectual disabilities
Anyone person and/or business who fails to recognize this lacks emotional intelligence.
Take your head out of your ass.
Mark says
Totally agree with Eric! And looks bad for NamesCon 2017, ROTD for accepting this one, honestly what are they thinking?
Jamie says
It was just a question. Trigger down! Also retardation was used in place of dumb which was seen as offensive back in the 40’s I believe. Yet we call people dumb all the time. I don’t think putting it on auction is wrong. Someone’s going to do it anyway.
Rick Schwartz says
I think this is a retarded disussion. lol
Retard is also to delay.
When I had a Pizza stand, we had to “Retard the dough”
I remember one of my employees got crazy because he thought my brother called him a retard.
That meant that you had to store the dough overnight. To delay using it. To slow things down.
And with any domain, it all depends on use.
I don’t own this domain and don’t even know who the owner is.
Eric says
Rick you belittle yourself and make yourself look foolish with such comments.. As above time for people to take their head of their ass.
Aaron Strong says
“I think this is a retarded disussion. lol”
C’mon man. Are you referencing pizza dough with that saying? That statement, which you find to be funny, is exactly how and why so many people who have disabilities get offended……This is not a politically correct issue, such as the many things in politics these days that some people find offensive. This is not a freedom of speech issue and this is not a definition issue, like pizza dough. This conversation has to do with REAL people, morals and respect. Morally accepting others that are not as fortunate. Respectful enough to treat them as they want to be treated. Treating them ethically……Today, I hope you can find time to visit a classroom of children that suffers from disabilities. I promise you will never use that term in that manner again. You may have to do some soul searching, but even the King can learn from them. Best to you!
Mark says
“When I had a Pizza stand, we had to “Retard the dough”

You’re not defending a UDRP, think about what you’re saying…
John M. says
“business is business” that’s correct and NamesCon is just that a business. With so many names that are truly better to auction why would they even consider any name that might offend anyone? Happy New year to all.
Eric says
So John M you would be Ok if KiddyPorn.com was up for Auction. Because its just Business right…
Jane Doe says
Eric, congratulations on completely misreading what John M said.
Monte cahn says
I think I will step in here since I chose this name in pre-bidding. I have sold many many controversial domainnames in my 21 years in this industry I certainly feel it’s about who buys it and how they use it not who sells it or if it should be offered for sale. This domain name can be turned into the most positive name depending on what the buyer does with it. It is a dead on keyword, dictionary term and extremely valuable in my opinion! We will see if it makes it to the live or online auction……
Aaron Strong says
Actually, by transacting this domain it tells us more about you than the buyer, at this point… You are correct it is a dictionary term and I challenge you to explain the MOST widely used definition and how it can be turned into the “most positive name”???…..
J.R says
You turn it into a positive by buying it, re-directing it to a page with content explaining why the name can be offensive to many. You can build a PC page on that space, and ensure that the domain is used for something positive and is not used for something negative.
Like George mentioned, the term Nigger is one of the ugliest words in the human language, and the NAACP as a human rights organization did the right thing buy buying it; but they should be re-directing it to a page that tells the history of the word, its impact on people and society, etc.
Aaron, you definitely need some time in your ‘safe space’. You are attacking rather than solving problems, just like special snowflakes…triggered????
Aaron Strong says
JR – No snowflake here buddy. You got it all wrong. Very wrong…It takes more balls to say what I am saying than what you spew…Also, by bringing this to attention I am contributing to solving the problem. Unlike you who is creating a problem….
Monte Cahn says
Exactly! Also the term is used by the new generation as something that is so cool and in that they say thats “Retarded” or lets have so much fun lets get Retarded. Words can be used in many many ways and I believe in freedom of speech and expression. Why would the registry allow the name to be registered in the first place? Many names are blocked that are offensive in nature, this name is NOT!
Aaron Strong says
Monte – 21 years of experience and you think offensive terms are blocked?…Name a few offensive terms blocked in .com?
Monte Cahn says
Why does it have to be a .com? When ICANN finally figured things out they put new rules on names that were offensive and restrict new and other TLDs on registration of those terms and phrases. Retarded is NOT one of those terms being blocked or restricted by anyone. In any case, Im not here to argue if the name is offensive to some or not, if anyone feels its not appropriate to buy, then dont buy it. I am the one picking names, Im not perfect but I do not see any issue with this domain being available in the market and having the potential for it to end up in the right hands. Its already possible for it it end up in bad hands, so I see it as a positive and it has NOTHING to do with anything else but having an open market to buy it or sell it and other terms I feel are appropriate. Thanks
Eric says
Monte you could have chosen from hundreds of other domains. Yet you choose this name. Really. Come on… Even as a publicity stunt its in poor taste.
You are a smart guy you know the connotation of meaning of this word. You know how its commonly used.
As I asked John M. You would also be ok in accepting KiddyPorn.com into the Auction? I’m sure the buyer will make a very positive site out KiddyPorn.com, same as the buyer of Retarded.com. I sure as hell know it won’t be about fookin pizza dough! You guys are fooling know one.
You desire and wish to peddle this name in a very public forum is in poor taste and reflects poorly on you, your company, namescon and any other ‘dick’ that tries to justify it being sold in public forum.
Shame on you and others trying who try justify your logic and the sale at the namescon auction as business.
Its bad business and in poor taste.
Monte Cahn says
Eric – you are right I am a very smart guy and have been doing this for a very long time. That’s why the name and the auction is getting a lot of attention and PR and controversy like this. Put your emotions to the side and look at the opportunity for anyone to have the chance to participate as a buyer or seller or both and make good use of what they earn from the sale or do with the names they buy. It is not for you to judge how this process works or what people find offensive. If you dont want to buy the name, then dont.
VR says
To be fair Monte, this name is getting a lot of attention because of Aaron Strong on namepros and Raymond posting it here. I think a name is a name, but let’s hope there are not people painting namescon negatively because of one offensive word. I don’t like the word and think if someone wants it let them buy it, but don’t shout it through Las Vegas. I actually don’t think it has much value, probably developed it’s just a target to get hacked or stolen.
Mark says
“It is a dead on keyword”
Yep dead on to a parking page, or blank page maybe..
Save face and delete it…
Dysfunctionalism says
I have a disabled son neither of us are offended.
People are just not happy unless they can bicker and bitch. it’s about
how the domain is used and it could actually be used to HELP people.
MOVE past this guys learn to handle your distress of words.
Josh says
This is a tough call because each side has a point, on one hand it is offensive on the other business is business.
I try my best to be sensitive to others so personally I would not auction it at the venue, would not have got to this point. In saying that I am also in the business of making money so on that hand I can see myself deep down saying why not.
Ultimately the moral question is answered for me, clearly not a great idea however the business question should be this (cold as it may sound)…Will selling this name at Namescon do more harm or good for their business, period.
It may just be that the debate offers a way out allowing Namescon to use a moral spin or is it there is no such thing as bad publicity and will selling it bring attention that leads to greater future results?
Just thinking out loud.
George Kirikos says
The NAACP owns Nigger.com (they almost let it expire many years ago; they should redirect it, rather than letting NSI profit via PPC). It’s all about usage, in my opinion, not being ‘politically correct’ and trying to ‘ban’ certain words.
J.R says
I agree. I have reached out to the NAACP to alert them about the PPC issue. These special snowflakes don’t understand censorship, and the slippery slope it creates; many haven’t read history or 1984; but they are the PC police with all the answers and no solutions…
J.R says
The domain should be sold. The domainer has a right to try to make a profit on their investment. Let the market decide, if it is truly an offensive term it won’t sell. Diplomatically speaking, another option could always be to have a private auction for names that the decision makers consider so offensive, that they personally do not want their names nor brand attached to such a sale.
However, the over-sensitivity to the term retarded is typical PC censorship. Moreover, for those special snowflakes that are so absolutely offended; put your collective monies where your mouth is, and buy up these sort of domains, and create something that your PC sensitivity will approve of. But no, you will just complain and undermine someone else trying to make a living outside of the corporate hell hole…
Donny says
When I was first reading the post, I was thinking to myself, I bet Rick could have some fun with this domain. For those who don’t know, Rick used to have something called the GBU. And if you ever made the GBU (Good, Bad, and Ugly) list, you knew that you were in trouble. I was just thinking of all of the snowflakes Rick would be melting right now if the GBU was still around. So it was good to see that he commented about the domain itself.
My next door neighbor when I was growing up, was “retarded” or so we were told. Now you would probably say that he has downs syndrome. But he was still my next door neighbor and we still hung out for years.
I think there are many things you could do with the domain, and if you are offended by the domain being for sale, maybe you should leave the room when it comes up for auction. When I buy domains I don’t discriminate against what I buy, I look at the domain at face value.
I have bought thousands of domains that I would not tell my wife or son about, but that’s something that I have learned over the years, it’s “whatever is best for business”.
brian says
come guys – the eight-year old pc banana republic is over.

This isn’t about PC.
I find the moniker “retarded” offensive . I wouldn’t want the name if it were offered to me for free. It’s a word I wish would go disappear, as no doubt it has caused emotional pain to persons with mental & brain disorders, as well as their families.
People can sell and buy whatever they want, if the product is legal.
But I wouldn’t want this domain. Not even sure how you would use it for development, unless for some vile purpose.
brian says
come on steve-
we have to think out the box – we cannot just shut the door on this stuff – sure its controversial – but only for the weak and impressionable follower sheep in the world.
heck – yesterday – amazon just got awarded a provisional patent on a floating 45K foot warehouse that will deliver our stuff to our front door – so we can just sit on our ass and watch tv and play video games and get fat all day.
Aaron Strong says
“sure its controversial – but only for the weak and impressionable follower sheep in the world.”
Yes, it may be controversial to you, but to the people and families that suffer from disabilities it is offensive.
member says
except when its not.
Steve O'Brien says
It is only a word and a domain name. This is a non issue in my opinion. It is always about how it is used in the end. Monte made the right call – it is a solid single word .com domain name. Hey Rick I am making pizza dough today and plan to “retard it overnight” for our party tomorrow night. We always make the dough a day in advance. I built a new wood fired pizza oven in the outdoor kitchen and it is a huge hit with all the kids. Happy New Year!
Rick Schwartz says
Eric,
Insulting people and calling people names for not agreeing with you just reflects poorly on you my friend. You are allowed to be offended. And guess what, I’m allowed not to be offended.
It’s called live and let live. And comparing it to child porn is just ridiculous.
Eric says
Rick… YAWN! you are so right. Please tell us another story about making pizza dough.
Rick Schwartz says
I’ll tell you another story Eric. If the car wasn’t retarded you wouldn’t be able to drive it because there be no braking system. You have to retard the car. You have to slow it down. Maybe you need to take a course in English and look at all the definitions and not have your narrowminded and insulting view.
You can get offended all you want but you will never be able to shut down other peoples thoughts and free speech. You don’t like the domain, don’t bid on it. You don’t like that namescon is auctioning it, fine, then don’t go. That is your right. But pal you have no right to abridge the rights of anyone else.
Aaron Strong says
Rick, first pizza dough and now braking systems in cars?…Are you kidding man?.. You continue to show your true character. You have done astonishing well with your financial life and I respect that. However, people are judged less by finances and more by character. …If you don’t like what I said, fine, that is your right. I have done more to keep free speech and the United States Constitution alive than you can ever do…So if you want to make this political and turn this into some PC thing, lets dance…Its my right to think and say this, your right to disagree.
Rick Schwartz says
Aaron,
First of all NOBODY has the right to question someone’s “Character” over a difference of OPINION!
YEAH my examples are quite legit. Real world. Sorry it is not good enough for you. But you can’t be blind to other usages. Look it up. Try to understand the slippery slope.
Now if it was directed at a person or to mock someone with downs syndrome, then I would be in full agreement with you. Shoulder to shoulder. No argument whatsoever. But it comes to how the domain is used. THAT is all that counts. USE!
I am fine to leave it right there. But mixing opinions with character and name calling by others is just not the way to make a point and persude.
Josh says
Adam, I learned long ago to expect nothing better from people who never gave me a reason to think they could.
J.R says
This is quite a crock of shit statement, “However, people are judged less by finances and more by character.” In modern history, at least, people are often judged more by their finances, then by their character. Why? Any many cases, finances is the way that most people measure character in the real world in terms of success, competence, and the ability to overcome challenges of the market place. Prove to me that ‘people’ are judged more by their character in a free market society…you are full of shit.

Michael Berkens says
Guess since its my blog I should weigh in here.
I’m going to go at the issue in a different way.
As most of you know who have ever bid against me in a domain auction, I love hip hop music so I’m going to point to the song and history of the Black Eye Peas song Let’s Get Retarded” for which I turned to http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=4532.
I have some thoughts after the info:
“”Originally, this was “Let’s Get Retarded,” which is how it appears on the groups album Elephunk which was released on June 24, 2003,
When it was released as a single, the song was changed to “Let’s Get It Started” so it would get radio play.
The phrase “Let’s Get Retarded” is a West Coast term that means to go crazy on the dance floor (synonyms are “Go Dumb,” and “Get/Go Stupid.”). The phrase is chanted at clubs and dances and used in everyday slang, but the word “Retarded” is offensive to people who see it as put-down of those who are mentally challenged. (If you want to be really politically correct, the term is “Cognitively Impaired).
Later copies of the album contained both versions of the song.
The single was released in 2003 as “Let’s Get Retarded,” but it took off when it was re-released later that year as the much more marketable “Let’s Get It Started.”
“This new version was used in a slew of advertising campaigns and promotions, including a series of NBA spots that featured the Black Eyed Peas. It provided a huge boost for the band and was their breakthrough single in America.”
“This song won the 2004 Grammy for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group.”
This was the first single to sell over 500,000 digital downloads in the United States.”
So I think this demonstrates at some point in the time of 2003-2004 the word moved into a group of words that offended a large number of people in a very substantial way and the Black Eyed Peas changed it to Let’s Get it Started
The song which was on the 2003 album, which had to clear legal at A & M records.
It’s possible the owner of the domain owned it when it was not an offensive term
Bottom line is that times change including language and words.
In 1961 for those that don’t know a comedian named Lenny Bruce was arrest for uttering the word Cocksucker in public.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenny_Bruce
Now laughable
So times change, words change and they way they are viewed by the public and society
So personally i would not have selected this domain for auction.
Monte Cahn says
Great Point Michael! And exactly my point on how the younger generation is using the term as being cool or having fun. Urban Dictionary: retarded
It means “very stupid” but in a more hilarious, weird, and/or spontaneous way. From the Latin word for “slow”.
If you want to tick off a politically correct person, just say it. They think it’s mean because people with mental problems are not always stupid, except you can’t call those people “retarded” in the first place, and nobody cares anyway. Plus, once again, it’s from the Latin word for “slow”.
*Guy 1 is dancing very strangely.*
Guy 2 to Guy 3: Look at Guy 1 dancing like he’s retarded.
This is why I put this domain in Pre-bidding!
Aaron Strong says
Monte – Your point of the younger generation using the term as ‘cool’ is exactly why there is a large movement to end the word in that context. There is nothing cool about making fun of people with disabilities. The movement is to make people aware that using the term in that manner is extremely insulting to the less fortunate, whether they know this or not. It is an education movement…..Also, you mention “politically correct “, again. ….This is not about being politically correct or not. I actually despise political correctness more than most (hasn’t anyone noticed? lol), but this subject is different, very different. I hope in the very near future you are able to further educate yourself on this subject and have a change of heart. We seem to have lots of minds here, but heart is limited at this time. Please visit, read and watch videos on http://www.R-Word.org to learn more.
Monte cahn says
Aaron and everyone, just to be clear the domain name is in pre-bidding, it has not been selected for either auction yet. But that’s not to say that it will not go into one of the auctions. It was not put they’re in an effort to be offensive to anyone or anybody. It is just a premium domain name with meaning…..good and bad (now with many opinions and view). And for clarity I have two people in my extended family and friends with family members that have Down syndrome. If I choose the name in the online or live auction I will certainly not do so to offend them either. It will be based on other factors already explained by multiple people in this thread. I hope everyone has a great new year !
Aaron Strong says
When you consider this domain for auction please keep these points in mind.
1. Those that oppose the word are not doing this for political reasons or for political correctness. The movement is not an attempt to censor. Freedom of speech is not part of this movement in no way. This issue crosses all political party lines, it is bi-partisan. Again, this is NOT a PC or censorship issue.
2. The most common use of the word does not include pizza dough, brake systems, slow movement etc. Sure these are all uses, but they are not common and not the FIRST USE in most all cases. There are plenty of other words one could use to describe pizza dough, brake systems etc. Our language is very large and there are so many other words that can be used in substitution.
3. The word is not ‘cool’. The word is often used in many settings with no regard and without knowing , but that does not mean the PAIN and the emotional toll is lessened. Kids on the playground may use the word while playing. Someone may say the word spontaneously in reaction to something they see or hear. When people use the word in those settings they are, without knowing, referencing REAL people with various types of disabilities. This issue is an educational movement to make people aware that the word brings PAIN.
4. The domain in subject is an exact match. Just the sight or sound of this domain brings pain to so many people. There is no way that this domain can be used in a good manner for the movement to educate. The domain could not be used on the radio or in any advertisement without causing PAIN to many. There simply is no good use to bring awareness or to educate with this domain.
5. Words matter. We are in a unique business that evolves around words. We should know and understand this better than most. By auctioning this domain in the largest domain industry convention we are doing nothing to lessen the negative stigma of selling domains. In addition, media may take notice and bring negative press to the entire industry. As an industry that uses and knows words, we can do better, much better.
6. Educate yourself further. Please visit http://www.R-Word.org to learn more. Understanding the PAIN and HURT the word brings to so many people can not be understated.
Mark says
Mike this pretty sums up everything IMO..
“So times change, words change and they way they are viewed by the public and society
So personally i would not have selected this domain for auction.”
I agree…
John says
I agree: this isn’t about “PC.” I personally hate “PC” and am against “PC.” I’m also as pro First Amendment and free speech as anyone.
That said, I say no, this domain should not be part of the event. All the obvious considerations above, beside and beyond “PC” and censorship are what apply. Anyone who doesn’t recognize that is kidding themselves. Let it go and can it.
John says
To state the obvious, it’s about basic sensitivity among other things, not a “PC” or unreasonable expectation of unwarranted “sensitivity.”
Also, not only am I as pro First Amendment and free speech as it gets, but I happen to be scheduled to meet with an attorney next month about a possible First Amendment free speech lawsuit I may file this year no less. That’s just to reemphasize what I posted above about what this really is and is not about.

Thanks for pointing that out. it appears that NamePros Moderators have already leaped into action and taken care of that listing. Listings like that are not allowed on Namepros. Profiting off of a tragedy touches on lots of ethics issues that a majority don’t agree with.
For the quickest response times, we generally ask that members use the “Report” feature so that the next available moderator can investigate and get involved.
Have a wonderful New Year.
Jon Schultz says
Where do you draw the line, Eric? Can someone sell HeartDisease.com on NamePros? Can someone sell Torture.com?
Of course many businesses prohibit activities on their property or website which the business owners would not want made illegal by their government – and while that may be somewhat hypocritical it is nonetheless understandable and I think they should have a right to do so.
What I really don’t like – especially as someone who was widely criticized in the media for asking $150,000 for Ebola.com (which I was not publicly advertising) – is all of the criticism leveled at people, in our society, for doing things that are supposedly immoral, as if “right” and “wrong” were objective realities and not subjective ones. I can’t say that I don’t do the same thing myself, to some extent, but I think it’s a character flaw in very many people that is at the root of many serious problems in our society including, to a large extent, war.
Such criticism is simply bragging “I am more moral than you,” in my opinion, and is basically meant to raise one’s stature in the eyes of others or oneself (since we have so much inculcated guilt due to being told, from the time we are babies, that so many natural feelings and activities are wrong). Many media organizations, politicians and activists pander to and profit from this societal mental illness (again, in my opinion) by publishing articles or otherwise criticizing one incident of “scandalous behavior” after another.
To say that’s immoral would be to do the very same thing, so I’ll just say that I think it’s foolish as it fans the flames of a fire which is burning our society, whatever the short-term benefits might be.
Hope I haven’t gone too far off topic.
Jon Schultz says
I think millions of people use the word “retarded” as a somewhat humorous way of criticizing a person’s actions without any disrespect intended whatsoever to people who have down’s syndrome. Thus, I think Retarded.com is a great domain which could be used very positively, not only to host a forum where people could sound off on things they consider “retarded,” but also to make the socially responsible and very valid point that people with down’s syndrome are not, by definition, retarded, as the word is commonly used. The site could solicit donations for a down’s syndrome charity and also sell things like T-shirts with sayings like, “I may have down’s syndrome but I am NOT fucking retarded!” and “Only retards call people with down’s syndrome retarded!” It could become a mass movement.
The issue is especially relevant at this time, now that – according to many major media outlets – we have a retard in the White House.

Same to you, DK. Hope to hear more of your thoughts in 2017.

“Happy New Years to all you “Domainer Retards”! lol”
Is this not name calling?…Please explain
You need to get a sense of humor Aaron and also read the second sentence and rest of the post!
You don’t know the difference between a tounge and cheek joke? Really??
Just because YOU are closed minded in your thinking and can’t figure out how to use the WORD “RETARD” in a sentence in multiple ways with multiple meanings does not let you dictate to others what is acceptable and what is not. THAT IS OFFENSIVE!
And YOU brought “Jackass” into the conversation. Not name calling?? Get off your high moral horse when the first thing you do is sling mud. You don’t get to dictate what others say, believe or register. And if you want to push it further, I will make you look like a fool in front of everyone!
You have a right to your opinion.
You have the right to state your opinion.
I have a right to dismiss your opinion.
I have a right to laugh at it and make fun of it.
You have a right not to agree.
We can leave ot there or we can take it further.
Your Choice!

This is free world market. Why not? Business is business, don’t get emotion in your way.

I have a difficult time believing Aaron Strong was on the winning side of this election. His short-circuited logic, with its flailing loose-ends, the posturing, all bears the losing side’s usual watermark. Don’t forget you lost the election, you’re in no position to set public agenda, though this actually is private business and you are meddling.
Aaron Strong says
What election did I lose? It was a great year for me regarding elections…..Also, this is not “private business”…The domain in subject is in a PUBLIC, SPONSORED, auction. The auction and convention is owned by a PUBLIC company.
William Devane says
Not answering any questions having witnessed you rudely blow-off at least three highly respected people’s opinion. Have it your way…. “The Weak Will Not Survive Unless The Strong Get Weaker”
William Devane says
Aaron you are not entitled to your own facts such as the definition of Public Auction which is one that is held on behalf of the government or city to liquidate surplus, seized, abandoned public property. If you are unable to delineate between the Drug Enforcement Administration auctioning speedboats, a domain name auction being held in a rented ballroom at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas, and GoDaddy “sponsoring” a SuperBowl advertisement, you’re a Socialist and nothing is private.
The domain name being auctioned is private property.
Aaron Strong says
William – When you call me a “socialist” you couldn’t be more wrong. VERY WRONG!!..What’s the Difference Between a Public Auction and a Private Sale? It can be found here.

You tried giving out reading assignments earlier, that’s not good enough Aaron.
Barrett-Jackson might be auctioning a GENERAL LEE, knock yourself out.
I doubt you’ve been truthful about your election results. The President Elect sent
me a thank you email because I endorsed him prior to the election. I seriously question
Aaron that you can produce a Thank You email from our new President.

Has any of you read Rosa’s law?

Visit http://www.marchofdimes.org, the leader in birth defects and search the word “retarded”.
March of Dimes prints “retarded” in a publication used to educate students who are considering abusing alcohol and getting pregnant: (“What is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome? What do you think it would be like to be a child who is developmentally delayed or mentally retarded?”)
marchofdimes.org/materials/teen-2-teen-segment-2-truth-and-consequences.pdf
If you ban the term birth defect, march of dimes would have to take their whole website down. That’s whats next, cause who wants to be called a birth defect by Aaron?
George Kirikos says
Those of us who’ve read George Orwell’s ‘1984’ know where censorship leads. The fictional language ‘Newspeak’ was created in order to restrict people’s thoughts, by eliminating certain words.
Censorship is doubleplusungood!
Aaron Strong says
George – I am well aware of ‘1984’…There are many events we have witnessed in recent history that should and does cause concern in relation to that piece of literature. Making it socially unacceptable to not use the N-Word has done nothing to further those concerns. The same can be said with the R-Word. There is no direct evidence that not using certain words, to show RESPECT to members of society, leads to an “Orwellian State”….. Based on many comments it is fair to say that many feel this is an attempt to further the left wing agenda and that is absolutely not the case here. This is a bi-partisan movement and I could point to well known figures of right wing politics that is against this word. The right and left wing of society rarely agrees in modern times, when it does agree, it should be embraced instead of being polarized. I am very well educated in politics and it would be easy to rant about it here, but this is not the place or subject. Based on comments, I can tell you that most would be very pleasantly surprised at what I have done and who I have associated with so that society does not become an “Orwellian State”…..

I graduated from high school in 2004. My Uncle told me, that when he was in high school in the 1970s George Orwell’s Animal Farm & 1984 was required reading along with other civic minded books. While in high school and attending undergrad at a top 25 public university, not once did a professor require any of George Orwell’s books. I read these books because my uncle gifted me copies during high school.
Unfortunately, academia has taken such a leftist communist turn, that the idea of slippery slopes, privacy and censorship are being eroded away by the year. Maybe 2017 represents a turning of the tied against communism, and re-embracing of liberty, free markets, and respect for privacy.
We shall see…
