The new gTLD .Web is scheduled to go to an ICANN auction, on July 27th.
There are 8 companies in the auction and 3 of them are public.
The public companies are Google (NASDAQ: GOOG), Web.com (NASDAQ: WWWW) and Cimpress NV (NASDAQ: CMPR) which is the parent company of Vistaprint Limited.
Google has a market cap close to $500 Billion, Web.com has a market cap of $1.26 Billion while Cimpress NV market cap is $3.15 Billion.
The other applicants for .Web are Donuts, Radix, NU DOT CO LLC which are the people behind .Co which was sold to Neustar, Afilias, and Schlund Technologies GmbH, which is a “registrar with operations throughout Europe”.
So the question is not who will win the auction but how much .Web will sell for.
The highest ICANN auction to date is for .Shop which sold for $41.5 million.
You can see all of the ICANN auction results here.
Jens says
$55 Million
Alex says
53 million
Domain Observer says
$ 5 million.
Bruce says
$85 Million
Rubens Kuhl says
$71 Million.
But the auction could still go private during the next weeks… time will tell.
Rich says
web.com will get it for $80 Million
ada says
Anyone knows how many more newTLD will be released?
Friend says
$68M for Afilias
Graham Haynes says
Old term anything over 10million will be over priced similar to .shop
Jack says
Agree, old term.
Should have come out 10 years earlier to gather interest.
Now it’s too late.
Not even worth $10M
Albert says
$100 Million +
STRIKER says
I don’t expect many to get this, but the intrinsic value is zero. What will it sell for? Who knows, but a famous line that some say has been incorrectly attributed to the late P.T. Barnum comes to mind.
Atta says
$40-50 million I guess.
steve says
.Web is a pretty good GTLD, but I don’t see why it would be more valuable than say, .net.
You’d think with the IOT, .net would become even more valuable, but I don’t see that happening, with everything connected and networked (social, sensors, wearables, location, etc)
If Google goes after this (which I do not think will happen), the other bidders will get large “consolation” payouts (better than that Cadillac and steak knives) .
You’d think Web.com would make it a priority to get this.
I’ll go with Radix as the winner: $7.5 million
But what do I know? I’m just a dog, albeit a golden retriever, so I’m gold.
John says
You’re right about the first part, but then you make a mistake thinking they will only pay such a small amount instead of something at least as big as for .shop and even much more.

the auction that a seller make in sedo, flippa , and all in the world must ne onorate the winner or no!!!
the answer is simple but the sure reply don’t arrive !!!!
the seller cannot transfer a domain win in a regular pubblic auction from a regular winner ???
there is only a reply yes or no !!!
you MR . Michael Berkens are a guru of the web so you can reply !!
thanks a lot
and best regards

.web TLD is perfect for those who don’t know that they are navigating the … web 🙂

.Web is another example of groupthink and ideological momentum among the insiders in the industry.
The term “Web” is certainly still good, but way past its prime in terms of domain appeal. Yes it would not be a dog, but it would not be any great awakening either.
John says
And instead of guessing the price, which is likely to be among the highest or the highest notwithstanding the above, this in my opinion is a much more interesting question to discuss though I suppose some may not want to do that:
The history of .Web itself and exactly why Chris Ambler and his company were not able to retain any rights to it if they ever had any. Has there ever been any discussion of that? Not that I’ve seen. Are people simply uncomfortable or afraid to even talk about it? I suspect that may be so for a number. It may be a done deal, but in my view it’s still a much more interesting topic to cover.
And with ICANN on the verge of full emancipation, isn’t it a good idea to really cover a topic like that? But some are reluctant and afraid, yes?…

Here’s a good starting point:

The winner will get a new gtld. The losers will get TWO. To me, gtlds are a complete waste of time and money and whatever amount is spent by the “winner” will soon prove to have been wasted.

For those that say .web should not be worth more than .net what do you think .net is worth?
.Net has around 15 Million registrations and Verisign takes in over $100 Million a year without any premium domains.
At 5X that’s $500 Million.
giuseppe says
hello we are speaking of .web ……the future .net ………..sure over 100 millions …about .web i think over about 20 millions of registraations …..is not xyz or other extensions …..more rec than blog and webs ……..
bye
…
drf says
.web is not the future .net. It is a worse version of .net
Number of .web registrations will be less than .net registrations
giuseppe says
for the new generation web sound better than .net ……sure arrive to 20. million and more not sure in a week ……..is important the price my opinion not over 20 dollars ….extension .net …….if i’m not in error first of com —-but the world is changed ….new generation ..i think prefer web to net ….an other extension that i don’t understand is webs …??? why ??….someone has drink a lot …??………but sure a confusion like this in the web …….good luck

I’m not sure anyone can place values on these .GTLDSs, albeit I’m sure there were many assumptions and projections presented to investors. After revenues, much easier to set values.
.web is a decent extension.
Is it better than .net as an alternative if you can’t get the .com? For example: Cloud.net or Cloud.web? I’d pay the big apples for Cloud.net.
It took many years for .net to reach its current valuation. Intriguing to find out why .com surpassed .net as the gold standard extension. Maybe due to the .com revolution between 1994-1999?
What do I think .web is worth? No idea. But it’s definitely one of the better GTLDs.
I’m transitioning out of domaining (quit while I’m still ahead); otherwise, I’d try to pick up a few premium key words to go with the extension. Social.web, Local.web, News.web, Alert.web, Doctor.web, Health.web…. all those should generate a ROI

“web” is meaningless, much like a book named “book” would be meaningless — but how much is “Bible” worth? I guess 20-30, for “web”, because that is how much Google paid for “app”, which is similarly meaningless and also a proprietary TLD (note that Google could decide to make “app” more meaningdul by setting up registration rules, e.g. an Android system requirement, etc.). Also interesting to consider might be comparing the reliability of a generic TLD in wide distribution (such as “net”) with a more narrow proprietary TLD (such as ”web”). MB’s earlier post about the company responsible for another proprietary TLD engaging in dubious business practices might provide guidance in this regard.
