It looks like around 12,000 .XYZ domain names were registered in the first few hours into the $.01 .XYZ domain promotion.
According to ntldstats.com, Uniregistry had 41,299 .XYZ registrations as of yesterday’s z0ne report before the announcement which was made around 5PM EST.
According to the last zone update there were 53,381 .XYZ domain name registered at Uniregistry.
So basically the increase of .XYZ domain registrations at Uniregistry for a partial day was 12,000 domain name registrations.
Today will be the first full day of the Uniregistry $.01 .XYZ promotion.
Additionally I received other promotions starting today at other registrars for .XYZ at $.02 a domain.
Fpr the record, as of today there are 2,956,740 registered .XYZ domain names according to ntldstats.com
We will give you an update tomorrow.

Spent 14 cents on names that perfectly match the extension:
beggarly.xyz
deplorable.xyz
derisory.xyz
despatch.xyz
eradicate.xyz
farcical.xyz
ghastly.xyz
nonsensical.xyz
pitiable.xyz
preposterous.xyz
shithouse.xyz
shonky.xyz
unusable.xyz
woeful.xyz
Sporran says
You lucky beggar. You grabbed shithouse.xyz for only 1 cent. I thought that would have been a premium priced domain name. Such is the rush for these 1 cent domain names, I must have missed registering this domain name within seconds.
I will feel so envious when I see that you have flipped this domain name for hundreds of dollars in the next few days, such is the desirability of the .xyz brand.
Sorry, but need to go quickly now as am in the throes of registering all dictionary words, adding the letter “s”, as Frank has advised.
ada says
Now, try sell even one 🙂
frank.schilling says
I don’t think we will ever see 1 cent registrations again from any registry in New GTLDs
Rip the dictionary and add the “s” to the end to register plurals.. At these prices you can afford to make mistakes.
The sale lasts another day
John McCormac says
Domain discounting is too valuable a tool for registries, Frank,
The renewal rates on heavily discounted registrations tends to be around the 5% level. (I’ve worked on a renewal rates prediction model for the main TLDs (com/net/org/biz/info/mobi/asia) and all of the available new gTLDs.) While most domainers concentrate on the drops and miss that very important fact. Of these heavily discounted registrations, approximately 5% may be renewed and this if these registrations are brand protection or developed, then they may continue being renewed. The other aspect of a freebie/0.01 cent offer is that it gets attention for a TLD. The downside, if it is overused is that it can lock a registry into a boom and bust cycle with its registrations in that it has to keep doing discount deals with larger registrars, or groups of smaller registrars, to keep new registrations ahead of the drops.
Jack says
Frank, stop pumping this farce.
Ryan says
Let’s get real here, .xyz will have to renew at 1 cent, or whatever gets registered today will be dropped one year from now. What do you think that people will carry these domains for years to come at regular renewals.
The people registering these domains are lemmings, being strung along like puppets, they do not have the ability to think, just react.
Joseph Peterson says
@Ryan,
That’s not fair. People who are registering penny .XYZs aren’t lemmings. They’re probably thinking very hard, imagining names and guessing what kinds of domains might resell. A lot of hard work and ingenuity will be wasted by smart but (mostly) inexperienced, hopeful domainers panning for gold in a river that has virtually no gold in it.
Undoubtedly, a few lucky people will find something that flips later on; and their story will be highlighted in order to convince more people to renew their .XYZs. It’s as if we’re seeing people leaping into fountains to pick up pennies. Somebody will find a nice penny, a collectible penny. Most won’t. They’ll just splash around.
I have a lot of respect for the domainers prospecting in this junk pile. They’re smart people, and they’re trying.
What bothers me, though, is that many domainers don’t realize how they’re being USED. Almost certainly, in any natural market with full $5-$10 prices, .XYZ is facing a big decline. Domainers’ penny registrations are needed to boost .XYZ numbers, masking that decline in .XYZ numbers as earlier sub-$1 domains fail to be renewed. That way, the registry can maintain the flimsy illusion that it’s a wild success.
While many domainers who bought below $1 give up and throw away their investments, their lack of success will be buried under a mountain of penny registrations, as new domainers come along, believing in the big .XYZ numbers from before. This new wave of domainers will contribute to maintaining the mirage. Instead of falling off a cliff as earlier registrations expire and drop, the registry can stay “on top”. We can all be sure they will point to their #1 spot (in terms of volume) as evidence of value, as they have done from Day 1, ever since the registrar-stuffing scandal.
That bogus selling point is used as bait. New domainers will be hooked. It’s a ghastly marketing plan, built on an illusion of success, targeting the naĂŻve.
And with all the publicity .XYZ is getting, more deserving registries – who are engaged in real marketing – are effectively drowned out.
Danny says
Jeez Frank .. Stop pumping!
Tried unlocking a few domains and buying some .com your site was sooo slow!
I ended up going back to Godaddy to register the domain..as the job task took 30 to 45 mins to try and register the said domain.
I’d rather give my money and time back to Godaddy!
Who cares about a flash app or a marketplace if the site runs like dial up!

FYI, http://Domains.co.za are giving .xyz domains away for free, today and tomorrow (up to 5 per person).
Michael Berkens says
For the record its not just Uniregistry holding this promotion although other registrars are charging $.02
Sporran says
12,000 registrations at 1 cent = $120. Just about enough for a lunch. Why is this such a story?
Newbies will be suckered in.
Everyone says that the majority are likely to be Chinese. Surely they cannot believe that they will be renewing at the 1 cent rate. The .xyz registry will get some newbies – and if they are not careful the newbies will subsequently have to renew at massively higher renewal rates. Scary stuff!
frank.schilling says
There is a fixed 43 cent ICANN fee on each registration between the Ry and RAR.. That is fixed. As I said, I’d be surprised if we ever see 1 cent or 2 cent reg’s again. Take that for what it is. This sale will be over in 2 days
The nice thing about Uniregistry is you will actually be able to administer, handle, mange and manipulate these volumes of names easily once you get them. And you can do those volumes on your app.
Good luck to all. Doubters, haters and pessimists included. ; )
Sporran says
Next, they will be suggesting registering all foreign words in .xyz adding the letter “s”, of course. Doesn’t matter – they are only 1 cent, so fill your boots while this offer of a lifetime lasts ………. that is until renewal time, ha ha ha ha.
As of now the following appear to be available, so hurry, hurry, hurry this promotion cannot last forever:
aufwiedersehens.xyz
adioss.xyz
aurevoirs.xyz
arrivedercis.xyz
The world seems to have gone mad.xyz!
Chris Rice says
@Frank.Schilling
If .XYZ can announce news as significant as abc.xyz (2015) or even better, the success of these $0.01 investors / speculators will be a major story. I consider myself an investor since I analyzed the Risks vs. Rewards. I will also be developing websites based in the Philippines.
This is just part of the overall long-term marketing plan for .XYZ and Uniregistry. Good job.

It’s only when the vanity metrics (registrations, etc) reveal zero value do you learn who has been domaining naked.
