I just chatted with the .XYZ registry who told me that over 400,000 .XYZ domain names have been registered today on June 1st as of 1pm EST.
Yesterday Uniregistry announced $.01 .XYZ domain registrations, but today many other domain registrars joined in and are offering $.02 .XYZ domain registrations.
Of course the day is not over and almost 40,000 registrations were added in just the last hour.
Based on these numbers, there maybe more .XYZ domain names registered today than any other extension has gained in any one day period, but I’m not sure which TLD holds the record or what the one day registration record is.
As of yesterday according to ntldstats.com there were 2,956,739 .XYZ domain names registered.
It will be interesting to see where the day closes out.
George Kirikos says
One of the the most important metrics for registry operators (and registrars) when they do these promos is the number of new and unique Registrants, as opposed to domain names registered.
400,000 new registrants registering 1 domain name each is quite a different story than 1 existing registrant registering 400,000 domain names (or a small number of registrants registering 10,000+ domains/each).
John McCormac says
There’s another related metric, George,
The dns density in the TLD can provide some indication as to the usage of the TLD. The more diverse the hoster/dns density, the higher the probability of development as small hosters and web developers buy into the TLD.
Paul Kapschock says
I am not purchasing any names but looks like a fun exercise for all involved.
Tony says
I’m curious how/if someone as smart as Berkens is playing this.
I personally am still on the sidelines.
cmac says
good job keeping those numbers artificially inflated, xyz
i only wonder how many regs they would have if they sold them at 10 bucks a pop? probably a fraction..what a joke.
Brad Mugford says
Let’s do some math here.
400,000 registrations @ 1 cent each = $4,000 in revenue.
There is an $0.18 fee to ICANN per registration and $0.25 per domain registry fee.
400,000 x $.43 = $172,000.
$172,000+ has been paid to make $4,000 in revenue. This does not include related fees such as credit card processing, marketing, pay for placement, etc.
Someone is taking a massive loss here to artificially inflate the numbers. You know Daniel Negari and others will be flogging this as a “success”. The reality is it is just a way to inflate the numbers, to offset the massive drops coming.
I guess this is a race to the bottom with .TOP. Who can get the largest volume of worthless domain registrations? They both have a long way to go though as .TK is the leader with 20M+ worthless regs.
Brad
John McCormac says
Could it be a domains for advertising deal, Brad?
You are looking at the immediate revenue from the deal where the real revenue, if any, will be in the 5% or so of those domain names renewing next year at something close to full fee.

.xyz and uniregistry hoping for suckers to auto-renew
Xavier.xyz says
.XYZ is looking to be the most popular ngtld in China. And it’s a good way to do it.
Props
Meyer says
I give Frank and Negari a lot of credit for creating additional interest and demand for the maturing gtld – ,xyz . And, separate themselves from the other gtlds which use a passive marketing approach. Hopefully, it will pay off.
If you don’t immediately recognize the strategy, it the “razor and blades business model” made famous by Mr. Gillette. Give the razor away cheap and sell them the highly profitable blades later. I tip my hat. It is a proven sales strategy.
Ryan says
This is a game, not a business, amateur, compared to professional.
It is good for the registry guys, becausemany will get burned with auto renewals.
steve says
@Meyer
“razor and blades” as well as “printer cartridges and printers” — not a viable comparison
or even “give them heroin for free, then get them hooked”
unless of course a cyber glitch occurs and wipes all the extensions off the planet, except .xyz, or if there’s a sudden outbreak of xyz viral syndrome, compelling people everywhere to register .xyz domains, in lieu of going to work, school, to meet with wife/husband, GF/BF
“Where are all the people?” they ask.
“Maxing their credit cards to register .xyz.”
“One lad already is going for the record — he’s registered 20 Billion xyz domains, using Fibonaci numbers and every possible combination of the genetic code ATCG, GTAC. in conjunction with every prime number up to 80 Billion.
“The asylum wards are filled with bankrupted patients who were found on the streets,, suffering from xyz syndrome.”
The XYZ contagion has begun.
If anyone wishes to write the screenplay, feel free. It’s as simple as abc, er, xyz.
WQ says
The icann fee loss can easily be written off as a marketing cost. How much does godaddy or uniregistry spend to get 40,000 registrations?
Godaddy considers this a marketing cost as well when they offer domains below their cost.
I think it’s a great marketing strategy.
Michael Blend says
IMO a smart promo from Daniel and Frank (and the rest of the channel). Doesn’t take many renewals to cover the $200k spent at the registry level
Joseph Peterson says
It looks like few people anywhere are willing to renew .XYZ domains at full price.
The biggest registrar for .XYZ is West.cn. They have nearly 40% of all .XYZ domains registered. Do they believe their customers are willing to pay full price? Hell, no! I’m sure they’d LOVE to get full-priced renewals, but they’re realists. So they’re desperately trying to cling to any registrations they can.
Right now, they’re subsidizing .XYZ renewals because they know what’s coming – a blood bath with all those sub-$1 registrations facing expiration. They’re offering renewals at $2.73 (18 RMB), according to Kevin Murphy of DomainIncite. Many Chinese registrants won’t even renew at THAT deeply discounted rate!
Clearly West.cn thinks most of its customers WON’T be willing to renew all their .XYZ domains at $8. Hence the $2.73 promo. And those earlier registrations – the ones where $8 is too much – are better than what’s left now! Yet some domainers will buy up the penny domains, imagining that they’ll sell for hundreds or thousands … at the same time as earlier, better .XYZ domains are valued in China at around $2.73 by the optimists!
Ryan says
Another question is 1 cent renewals, as most of these people will not even be able to afford $1 renewals, might as well just make it free.
Tom S says
I own some .xyz domains that I bought on the first day of GA in 2014. I also bought a couple other GTLD names. I have not seen any type of promo for the other GTLD’s. I give credit to xyz for promoting their extension by keeping it in the news. It’s got to increase interest in .xyz.
Xavier.xyz says
Frank will get new uniregistry costumers!
Daniel is making .XYZ famous!

Desperate times ask for desperate measures… just ask Negari.
Frank.Schilling says
The best lesson here is for bulk registrants. With all these new extensions we are entering a world where bulk sales and purchases are more routine: “transfer 10k names from this account to that!” .. How would you actually pull that off at any other registrar today?
I had one old time domainer tell me he didn’t “get” new gtlds until he managed his first 5 thousand names at Uniregistry.
Now you can create subportfolios, drag and drop groups of thousands of names into specific sales profiles — that technology didn’t exist last year and Uniregistry makes it possible to trade and manage differently than before.
The best thing that I get out of this promotion is the ability to show bulk registrants that they can handle 100k registrations as easily as 10.. That stuff is hard to do well and I’m proud that Uniregistry invested in our infrastructure to make those feats possible.
I’d expect some discounting around renewal time next year .. the registrants of today and tomorrow are the winners.
Domain says
You are really just embarrassing yourself.
Ryan says
You are already rich, I have to agree, you are coating the sugar a bit to heavy.
You said the same thing about .tattoo, I never got a single offer on any, I lost money, and dropped them all.
A Mitchell says
Starting out on Uniregistry is like waking up as Peter Pan and realizing that you can fly.

Let’s hope karma will crack the mirror and put out the smoke on this smoke & mirrors scheme
Shame on anyone involved in such desperate tactics to elevate vanity “false” metrics.
I once had a high opinion of Frank Schilling. Not any more. This is pathetic.

I just downloaded a copy all .XYZ domains and their WHOIS info from EasyWhoisPro.com. I’m planning on doing a case study on the registrants and registrars with the most domain names.
I’ll post a link to it here once I’m done with it 🙂
