.Car, .Cars & .Auto Hauls In Another Cool Million

January 21, 2016 by Michael Berkens

The new gTLD’s .Car, .Cars and .Auto went into it’s first day of general availability (GA) yesterday a domain name  could be registered on a first come, first severed basis.

According to RegistrarStats.com here are the totals from the first day of GA

.Auto 164

.Car 136

.Cars 129

So basically 430 domain registrations at a wholesale price to the registry of $2,000 per domain, let call it a cool million for the registry

The registry which is  a joint venture between Uniregistry and XYZ.com reportedly took in another $1 Million in the Early Access Period including EAP fees.

Including domain registrations by trademark holders in the Sunrise Period, the domain names registered in the Early Access program and the first day of GA here are the total number of registrations:

.Auto 240

.Car 209

.Cars 206

One domain investor proudly announced on Facebook he registered e.auto, e.car and e.cars on the first day of GA.With retail prices around $2,500 per registration that is $7,500 a year in renewal fees but they are great domain names. In the RightoftheDot.com extended auction ending today from Namescon, the domain name Y.car has a high bid of $1,100 (1st year of registration included) on Namejet.com, it will be interesting to see where that one winds up.

They are all good, but something about .auto sounds better. I’m thinking this is probably related to local TV commercials I’ve heard over the years in which the word “auto” was used more in a dealer name. Also the local “Auto auction”.

      Thanks M

      Except for “something about auto”
      How about
      iCar VS iAuto?
      eCar VS eAuto?
      xCar VS xAuto?

.AUTO is far more versatile than .CAR / .CARS.

Cars, trucks, vans, buses, and motorcycles are all automobiles. But they’re not all cars.

.AUTO encompasses automotive products and services apart from the automobiles themselves – parts, repair, detailing, chops, etc.

.AUTO matches words outside English, whereas .CAR / .CARS are linguistically limited.

And what about the 800 horsepower elephant in the room, the absence of “.autos”? 🙂

You can apply for that one next time in like 2020

I like .auto among the 3
If the prices would have been $10 i would have picked up 100 .auto names.

Sure but then they would have been premium priced with premium renewals

This stuff cost money so they have to recoup it

They pretty much sell you the same product 3X over, if this registration pattern continues it will be a huge success for the venture.

    Hi Michael Berkens,
Greetings! Will the new Tld ext .auto. car. .cars will be valuable & potential like .com? What prospects of the 1000 new Tlds?

Nearly every city in the country has several local auto dealers, both new and used. Most do business beyond their local area too. So a city.auto name would make an excellent online domain name brand for a local dealer. Most auto dealer websites have a three word name. Something like Atlanta.auto would be very memorable and provide all the cachet you would desire in a great local name that sounds good and looks good in print.

It would also provide a logical portal for out-of-town buyers who want to browse the auto inventory in a locality.

@Menius, nice comments. That makes sense . But my question is will it be as good as .com? why the price is so high? Is it a new game of hype? Let’s say we registered a few domain aaaaaa.car, bbbbbb.cars & cccccc.auto, if developed, will it be worth investment?
