Verisign is reporting that the number of .Com domain names has topped 120 Million for the 1st time and likewise the number of domain names active in the .Com zone file top 119 million.
The .Com domain name base which has topped 120 million domains is explained as:
“”The domain name base is the active zone plus the number of domain names that are registered but not configured for use in the respective Top-Level Domain zone file plus the number of domain names that are in a client or server hold status.
The domain name base and the active zone change frequently and are updated on this page at least once per day. The update times may vary each day. Today’s domain name base is not necessarily indicative of results that may be expected for the current financial quarter or year.
The daily domain name base provided on this page may not be comparable to domain name counts we disclose elsewhere. The domain name base may also reflect compensated or uncompensated judicial or administrative actions to add to or remove from the active zone an immaterial number of domain names.””
Verisign reports the number of .com and .net domain names on their site which is updated daily
The active zone as of 09/29/2015 contains 119,168,262 .COM domain names.
SoFreeDomains says
About 1 million unused .com domain names – available at the secondary market.
Mason Cole says
“Active” in this context looks misleading. In industry references, “active” usually refers to a domain that has a website, not merely an existing registration in the zone file. We know a good number of these registrations don’t resolve to any form of website — between 14-22% of .COM domains do not have any website (depending on when the domain was registered).

Mason so then its over 119 million
