Since Google Inc. announced Alphabet Inc. on August 10, 2015 around 3 PM ET and stated they will be using the domain name ABC.XYZ, the new gTLD .xyz has had nearly 20,000 new domain names registered!
It started with over 6,000 .xyz domains being registered after Google’s announcement.
New registrations for .xyz cranked that rising total up over double in one day with 13,000+ more domain name registrations! (13,206 to be exact) with a two day total of about 20,000 newly registered .xyz domain names.
It is amazing that one domain name being used by Google has sparked a vast amount of these domain name registrations for the .xyz registry. Of the 13K+ registered on August 11, 2015 over 130 are directly related to the announcement with domain names including the term (or typo) of “Google”, “ABC” and “Alphabet”. It is worth mentioning that all 3 are trademarked terms.
Here are some the domain registrations to the 130+ I picked out of the list that relate, none of which were registered by Google based on some quick whois research I did on a handful of the domains.

Out of all of the new gTLD extensions, .xyz holds the highest share (16.6%) with well over 1 million domain name registrations, with the second highest new gTLD .网址 (xn--ses554g) coming in with just over 375K registration according to NTLDstats.com. .science, .club and .top round out the top 5.
Domainer Extraordinaire says
Foolish people must think Google is replacing Google.com with abc.xyz. They need to use a time machine and go back in time and register alphabet.xyz and then sell it to Google for $3,800 to make any money on a .xyz.
Andrew Rosener says
Coincidentally we own Alpha.xyz and since the announcement the domain is getting a lot of traffic and tons of offers.
striker says
Whatever, dude…go pimp your wares somewhere else
Kevin Murphy says
The current .xyz growth spurt actually goes back to August 4.
Nuno Oliveira says
Cheap registrations (they cost $1 if people can search) and most of them will not be renewed.
Hype at its best 🙂
Tom says
You mentioned a handful of registrations
what about the 3-985409u808r49439u.xyz registrations x1000 etc… most of it is jargon
Is google going to buy these names off these people, hell no

1) Less than 35% of the global population use the Roman / Latin alphabet..
2) In many of the national alphabets there are no X, Y or Z. e.g.
There is no X in the Polish or Turkish alphabets
There is no Y in the Romanian alphabet
There is no Z in the Icelandic or Swedish alphabets
There are no X or Y in the Slovenian or Italian alphabets
There are no X , Y , Z in the Irish, Scott Gaelic or Hawaiian alphabets.
3) In EVERY non English language XYZ are pronounced differently and with a different accent.
.
To summarize: Less than 10% does not make it “global, international, worldwide”

There is x in the polish alphabet.
av says
There’s no: Q, V or X in official polish alphabet

This is super news for .xyz, but people should keep in mind that Alphabet, Inc is a holding company, not unlike Berkshire H. This divestiture of Google’s moonshot assets, i.e, non-revenue generating entities it developed and acquired, was executed to enable Google, Inc to reflect revenue growth without exposing its stock to the costs and overhead of the non-revenue generating assets (Nest, Deep Mind. Boston Dynamics, Calico, Project Loon, etc). Google attempted to acquire Alphabet.com from BMW, but it failed. I predict it will acquire Alphabet.com from BMW through a similar agreement Apple arranged with Cisco for iPhone.
99% of the domains registered yesterday, like abcgoogle china.xyz are rubbish; however, alpha.xyz, owned by Andrew Rosener, has real value and will fetch a decent price on the market, either from Google or an investor.
Mike says
Now can Google spend the money they should use for umbrella company’s .com name for filing UDRP case(s) against thousands of useless domain names.
Andy Brier says
@Kevin, the current growth spurt marks the end of the NetSol registrations leaving the zone. The NetSol promotion ran from 2nd June to the 2nd August last year and the associated drops from the zone were lagging 2/3 days behind. Of the approximate 376,350 NetSol registrations gained over the course of the promotion 24,568 now remain in the zone (6.5%).
.XYZ has been adding 3k+ per day new registrations while the drops from NetSol were playing out. Now that those drops have finished and coupled with the bounce from abc.xyz, I would expect much bigger daily increases from now on.

Who is the Jester of XYZ?
Karl Jackson says
Google is dead serious about the it’s re-structuring. I believe a new dawn is upon us. I’m betting on http://alphabetsearch.xyz
Jonathan says
You’re kind of leaving some information out. You mentioned 20k new domain regs since the announcement, but left out there were averaging over 5k a day before the announcement.
Then – “Out of all of the new gTLD extensions, .xyz holds the highest share (16.6%) with well over 1 million domain name registrations,”
Do you feel it’s significant that according to Namestat, 69% of those regs are from China? And we all know about the Netsol freebies and then all cheap deals for the names, which helps those numbers.
https://namestat.org/xyz
peter says
Its worth mentioning that there are over billion chinese people and that 70% is a funny number there, not visible at all.
Only over 7% .xyz from USA.
dondomainer says
From USA : 40 .XYZ REGISTER = $320 ==== After 12 days : 2 sales for 599 each = $+1048 – 320 – SEDO = $728 profit.
Jamie Zoch says
@Jonathan,
Thanks for adding the info. There are always many angles one can write from and I just happened to use what gTLD’s rank by volume. I do agree that I could have mentioned the 7 day average registration of 6,677 average for .xyz registration but I didn’t happen to look at that stat when I was writing the article. I was looking at a different site.
accent says
EVERYBODY does NOT know that the vast majority of .xyz registrations were involuntary and free of charge. You feed the dishonesty when you use the raw numbers.
accent says
You know …. abc.xyz is a pretty good domain.
….. but ….. I cannot think of a single other .xyz that would have real memorability. Its an extension with only one true premium domain.
Reality says
Gee, that’s nearly 20% of the number of .COMs that are registered every day. Only about 16 years to go until .XYZ catches up, assuming no one registers a COM ever again.
Kevin says
So what you’re saying is .xyz will reach the current growth rate of .com in 16 years as oppose to the 30 years it took .com? Interesting logic. And by the way, how’s the availability of desirable .com names doing these days?
One of the biggest myths about new TLDs is that success is simply measured by registration numbers. New TLDs are about increasing competition and providing more personalization for users.
claude says
Hi,
The current .xyz growth good can you beating your competitor with tld like that is not enough…Google looking for brand!
