Barclays has found a home now at Home.Barclays, back in May they said they would be transitioning away from the .com and the .co.uk. They said they would be adding a layer of security for customers and clients by allowing only Barclays and Barclaycard to set up websites ending in .barclays and .barclaycard.
So now Barclays has the .com redirecting to Home.Barclays but not the .co.uk, that domain still stands alone and does not redirect. The one thing I think all these brands need to do is have continuity. On the hit HBO show Silicon Valley, a few people I know mentioned that they saw www.hooli.xyz, so that told them it was a domain name. I asked my one friend, “What if you just saw Hooli.xyz ?” He said he would have thought they forgot the .com.
So now back to Barclays, www.barclays does not propagate, I think at a minimum all brands should at least redirect the www to home or site or whatever they are going to use as the main gateway to their branded extension. The consumer who could care less about new gtlds, at least knows WWW, so I can imagine people typing in www.barclays must have been lost. Of course the .com redirects for now and it should for as long as there is a Barclays.
TLDoperator.help is conducting two webinars tomorrow, I hope they bring up the point of continuity when it comes to using these new branded tlds.

“www.barclays does not propagate”

Probably a good sign that they don’t really know what they are doing. Another Overstock situation in the works?
Some of the other sites still resolve as normal,
https://www.barclaycardus.com
https://www.banking.barclaysus.com
A very messy implementation.

While this is probably not the tipping point this surely is a huge boost to the new gTLD programme. I’ve seen the usage of Dot brands as a key driver for internet users to be aware what’s possible. For sure they need to make sure that all their old domains propagate and there is a catch all for any .barclays address, so let’s hope they will stay consistent to their dot brand strategy

If I see something like http://www.barclays, i tend to add “.com” to the end of the name.

Home.google, Home.yahoo, Home.Nike. I am wondering when it will happen. May/Maynot happen.
Domain Observer says
Technological advance may allow the use of simpler (nothing).google for their homepage.

Agreed

it will sure make home.com worth more than ever. personally i think home.whatever looks lame. it would be better if they could just type in barclays or .barclays with nothing in front of it.

Try http://com.google

One of the advantages for any gTLD registry (but particularly closed brands) is having access to NXDomain data, which in part informs the registry what domain names in their TLD are typed in by consumers that don’t resolve. If a particular name that is not registered gets enough type-in traffic, the brand registry can simply add it to the zone file and redirect as they choose thus capitalizing on what is likely a natural consumer response to their platform.

The interesting point is when will Barclays start promoting home.barclays in their ads.
The real take up of these new extensions will happen if people see so many brands using .brand and then start to ask the brands they consume from, especially where secure transactions are made, why they do not have a .brand that works that they can type in and “trust”. I personally do not think this will happen however I also didn’t think young people would get 99% of their news from two apps and that the youth of today would be so happy to give away all of their personal information.
