Don’t take any comfort in that.

Its clear that .Marriott is coming and they are going to use it, although they haven’t launched it yet, so of course the announcement is on a .com

You can see from the horse mouth that these .Brand new gTLD’s will start to be in use later this year and that millions of people will start to be exposed to them through the Brands

will the public embrace them or will businesses go back to their .com’s in a years time? hasn’t there already been smaller brands that tried using a .brand only to go back to .com?

The brand should use the brand. However on the word stage the public “aspirational” cognitive anchor brand is .com. Change is inevitable but the one accepted global common denominator is the .com. Try and get that agreed at the WTO.

I think it’s a nice move by them. Especially in the hotel industry there’s a lot of fraud going on online, and when a site uses a .marriott you know that you’re in a good place.
Markmonitor did a study some years ago showing that hotels lost 2bn USD annually in lost bookings and unnecessary commissions. While they surely have self-interest in proving a huge problem for hotels being a brand protection company, I’m sure there are some big losses involved.

They have the TM & the .com now the .Marriott All one in the same protection. The move will not dent your perceived big losses.

.com as consumer-facing corporate anchor and .brand for channel partners.

I think this is a really sensible move. I agree with Christopher, I think with the amount of fraud online, this is a great way to ensure users feel confident when visiting the site.
