Website Magazine asked the question: “Do Domain Extensions Matter ?”
They went on to cite a recent study from Interbrand that stated 94 percent of consumers correctly recalled .COM while only 7 percent correctly recalled a new domain extension.
From the article:
In addition to memorability, Interbrand’s study sheds light on clickability. In fact, the data shows that 61 percent of consumers who were shown a search results page displaying similar Web addresses with different extensions still clicked on the .COM extension – even when new domain extensions were displayed first. Moreover, 62 percent of respondents who were previously recommended and shown a new domain extension Web address still clicked on the .COM version.
They also included an infographic:

They forgot to mention why they won’t go on non .com sites.
In my case, I am scared of scammers and virus. I won’t click on pay.pal or visa.creditcard! The only thing we have to know if a website is leggit is a brandname.com.

.COM is cultural phenomenon – meaningless, illogical, generic TLD; and the so-called “civilized” part of the world recognize it.
Might be that way for about 5 years at best and then it’s gonna be off, on life support and retired for good.
These .COM infographics are nice, poor font choice and a bit totalitarian composition but the colors are just about ok.

.COM is an empire that will naturally follow the path of all the other great empires. 5 years is a stretch for me.

@ Carpe Diem,
You obviously are a sophomore or just mistaken. The momentum and first to market .COM extensions advantages are being magnified and further solidified, not sent out to pasture. We do not agrree with you . All historical Market Analysis and the weight of fundamental evidence suggest you are wrong .

Dear Jeff Schneider,
You mean, the Market Analysis of the kind.. apples to oranges, written by the verisign bumblebees echelon?
.COM won’t make it in the long run, there are still a few good years left and a few dollars to be made by the interested parties but you are gonna see more and more of the new domains, not less.
The Internet users will become more familiar with the new domains – just like it was with .COM in the 1990’s.
.COM is quite aged and pretty hard wired into the application layer of the web, and peoples minds.
But all goes in cycles, the new gtld’s will eat into .com like a deadly bacteria.
Cheers

If something is hard wired, then more than likely it is not going away. What is the catalyst for the public to forget .com. My Grandma asked what a .us was ?
Carpe Diem says
Dear Rand,
The world wide web is always in flux, so the fact that the TLD scene remained static for so long, led to the “side effect” .COM to become hard wired.
Now that you have some fresh new domains in large abundance, we will see how far and how much go-go juice .COM is actually left with.
The fact that you see “statistics” of the kind “.COM still rules” means .COM is actually in defensive mode.
Cheers

The article itself provides zero basis or analytics on how it derived the results so it’s taken on word.
I could predict that more people can remember Apple, Orange and Pineapple than Porterhouse, ChateauBriand, Wagyu. Say that was true in people that I asked. Perhaps I could also conclude that vegetarians have better memories? More so if the study was commissioned by the owner of orchards and groves with an import-export business in Costa Rica.
I have inquired into more detailed results 🙂

Sounds like Sarah Palin had something to do with the results, which would also help to explain them, You Betcha 😉

Can I assume from your comment you see no value in the enginee.red domain hack ?

So right of the dot….does not matter is what you are saying….the right of the dot is worthless???
