It is not like he went to godaddy, and registered this name on his own.
Looks like .club probably marketed free domain, and design.
Strange whois info for a .club hand reg?

Bryan,
Just to add some additional detail around this. We did work with his team to get his site up and running. I should point out that we did not pay any compensation to use a .CLUB name other than the support we offered in helping get it launched. We will work closely with celebrities to help them get their fan club sites up as .CLUB resonates well with celebrities.

It doesn’t get any better in terms of familiarizing and reinforcing the positive feelings and associations people already have with the term “club.” So when they see any site with “.club,” the celebrity factor only adds fuel to the familiarity, popularity and comfort zone. I’ll bet quite a few big names in the industry are regretting now having pursued this one. 🙂

Here’s something I find really funny. I wasn’t even going to bother registering the “Example Club.com” version of my .club site at all unless I felt like it some time down the road, and left it unregged for a while, but when I saw what visitors to my .club site do in terms of exactly what I want them to do, I actually registered the .com as DEFENSIVE registration instead of the other way around. As someone who has been active with domain names since 2001 and still regards .com as the (merely) *overall* king, I find that deliciously funny. 😀 And the .com will continue to forward to the .club… 🙂

This is the reason why at least for the next few years, .COM will continue to surge. I launched EnterpreneurWiki.com and will be switching to Entrepreneur.Wiki (I just think its a much cleaner brand). But I will also keep the .COM and forward to my .Wiki.

I too have been registering defensive .com’s which redirect to geo-gtld’s.
New gtld take-up has been slow no doubt & the DN communities can only push so far, but I have already come across working businesses who have dropped their .com’s in favour of new gtlds. (in London. UK)
