The number of new gTLD registrations just crossed the 3.5 million mark according to ntldstats.com
The question is how many of these 3.5 Million new gTLD domain names are paid for registrations made by third parties unrelated to the registry
So we are basically backing out any known free registrations, any domain name registered to the registry itself or to parties related to the registry in which case we are talking about the principal owners of the registry, any domain registered and reserved by the registry (as opposed to just reserved but not registered)
Here we go (all numbers are rounded off the the most logical number)
Free Domain Names
.XYZ 376,500
.Realtor 88,500
.Berlin 75,000
.OVH 50,000
Total Free Domains 590,000
Domain Name Registered to Registry as Reserved Domains or registered to a related party (Only those with 1k or more are included)
.网址 (website) 101,000
Uniregistry Strings: 86,500
公司 (business organization) 17,500
.网络 (network) 12,500
.Voting 11,500
.Top 4,750
So basically we are looking at around 825,000 of the 3.5 million new gTLD’s where were either registered or given away for free or registered by the registry or a related party.
Those are the obvious ones.
That leaves a maximum number of paid for third party registrations at around 2.7 million.
