Ever since the roll out of the new gTLD program was announced one of the big questions everyone asked is how domain names using new gTLD’s would rank in the search engines against more established extensions like .com, .net and .org?
Coffee.club, which just launched a week ago has landed on the 1st page of Google organically.
Yes they are also advertising under the key term, but they also are ranking on the 1st page of Google organically beating out domain names like coffeeclub.com and thecoffeeclub.com which is actually forwarded to coffeeclub.com.au, Green Mountain Starbucks, Coffee of the month club, keurig and a ton more sites which have obviously been around a lot longer than a week.
As most of you know I’m a Director of a company, RightoftheDot.com which is working with the .Club registry and first started chatting with Bill McClure about Coffee.Club back in January of this year who bought the domain name for $100,000.
So yes I’m personally proud of the sale and of the site and the fact that it has already hit the 1st page of Google search.
However beyond my interest, the facts are the facts and to get on the first page of Google a week after launch for any site is pretty impressive and for a new gTLD, well it answers a lot of questions on how new domain name extensions will rank.
Congrats to Bill and to the .Club registry.

When I do a Google search for coffee club it comes up on the 2nd page for me (either 16th or 17th depending on if I use quotes or not for my search). But, that is still a great ranking for a new site.
Logan Flatt says
They would rank higher if they rewrote their tag to put the phrase “Coffee Club” at the start of the tag. In other words, change: “It’s good to be in the Coffee.Club” to “Coffee.Club: It’s Good to Be In the Club”, or some such.

Page 2, for “coffee club”. Do they plan to get the .com before the owner wants 7 figures?
Justin Hetfield says
I love it. Bravo to you Michael for saying the facts and not bowing down to .com fanaticos. I am not saying .coms aren’t good. I am saying domainers soon understand gtlds are here to stay. This ain’t .mobi era.

Coffee.club appears nowhere in my results?
Wouldn’t the fact that Coffee.club has a large number of links to it, due to all of the PR and blog posts, specifically because of the $100k sale hype, be the reason for the high search engine ranking?
impulse says
Yes, the publicity/links are probably why it is ranked so high, but the point is that Google seems to have treated it the same as a .com domain.
Leonard P Britt says
I see coffee.club as the first position of page two of Google for “coffee club”
They appear to be advertising on Bing & Yahoo but I do not see any organic ranking there.

What keywords is it ranking for? It’s not on the 1st page of Google for the term coffee club. I used Tor to remove all of Google’s personalization filters to get a true search result. My result is consistent with the other commenters results that http://www.coffeeclub.com.au ranks as the number 1 result on Google. It’s on page 5 when using google.com search
Michael Berkens says
Its on the front page of google where I searches for coffee club
that is why I put up the screen shot

Mike, I think it’s easy for us to forget that Google personalizes SERPs based on what we’ve demonstrated that we, as individuals, are probably looking for. As director of the company that works most closely with .CLUB, your results are undoubtedly tailored by Google to reflect your interest in .CLUB in general and in particular .CLUB domains that you’ve searched or visited in the past.
Skewed search results like this are also related to the ads people see on parked pages. So this bias (which most internet users don’t think about) often results in UDRPs being filed by companies that overwhelmingly see their own ads or ads for competitors within the industry they’re most interested in prominently displayed as ads. They feel targeted by the parking company or domain owner, but it’s frequently the upstream ad provider (e.g. Google) that is targeting them as individuals when it serves up ads it thinks will be relevant to them.
Coffee.club is #10 in SERPS for me when I look up “coffee club” without quotes — meaning that it’s at the bottom of Page 1.
I still think that’s quite impressive, and I anticipate that it will only climb higher. Congratulations!

Absolutely correct, it’s the filter bubble effect, there’s a TED talk on it if you want to know more.
I see it on page 6 of google.com results, still not bad for a new site, but not surprising giving the marketing blitz.
The important question here is – Given the same marketing spend, which will rank higher, a newgtld or an existing tld?
Michael Berkens says
I’m did not nor did I ever say .com are no good
I own 75,000 of them

Will the owner of club d0t com please stand up 🙂
I use bing for all if my searches and coffee, club is the #1 AD displayed, but the site doesn’t appear anywhere on the first page.
numedia says
Appeared at the middle of the second page for me. Their ad appeared at number three of three ads shown on the top on the first page.
numedia says
On Bing, appeared in the middle of the second page. Ad appeared fourth of four at the top of the first page.

The example of coffee.club shows, Google search is agnostic to new gtld extensions. Good example to show putting in the work can get the new gtld to rank as well as any result!
cmac says
its no where to be found in google results for me with or without quotes. i gave up after page 10 and even came across this article on page 7 but no results for coffee.club.
Christopher Hofman Laursen says
While we all get excited, when we see the new gTLDs fare well in Google search, it’s important to double check. You need to check in Google’s incognito mode, and it’s nowhere to be found on the first pages. Anyway, they haven’t done any SEO for the term coffee club, so maybe it could rank if they did a little effort.
Louise says
Using demo software from Keynote, a search on Google.com on an ipad 4 from France shows Coffee.club is #7 on page 1. (The top two entries are ads clearly marked with an organge box in front of the title, otherwise, they could be confused as the first two results.) Then, there are two results, then a wikipedia entry across the page like a banner which counts as an organic result, then 3 more regular results so, we are up to 6, then the coffee.club google listing. After the coffee.club listing is the images band across the page, then 3 more regular results. After that, near the bottom, are 3 more ads distinguishable by the orange box, including, coffee.club.

IT’S ALL lies.
I spent my research! Site is located page 41, in the search results. Sometimes 35 page.

Google does not rank premium names! Only Microsoft.
I am also the owner of the premium names. My sites in 20 pages in Google search.
Thanks.

I just did a search in Google for coffee club [not in quotes] and coffee.club came up #1, after the 3 ads at the top of the page. I am located in the USA.

Hmm this is interesting. I know this post is a bit old, but I was considering buying a new domain suing new TLDs and was doing some research which brought me here. Thanks!
