4 new gTLD entered General Availability (GA) yesterday (.Melbourne was on Tuesday local time) and including all Sunrise domain name registrations by trademark holdersm and all registrations under the landrush in the case of .Melbourne and the Early Access Program for those willing to pay an additional amount to get early access to a domain name here are the totals after the 1st day of GA:
.Melbourne 2,518
.Restaurant 2,389
.Gifts 1,010
.Sarl 176
We should note that Uniregistry launched ;Gift a while back and has over 7,000 domain names registered but over 4,000 of those were registered by an affiliated company, North Sound Names.
Uniregistry unlike Donuts the operator of .Gifts does not charge an annual registration and renewal price on any of its domain names so I would attribute the difference in the premium pricing as in my opinion the plural .gifts makes a much better domain name than .gift.
Melbourne is the capital and most populous city in the state of Victoria, and the second most populous city in Australia with over 4.3 million people.
Of course we will see how this new domain extension does in 30 days, but for now 2,500 registrations out of a city of 4.3 million isn’t great.
.Sarl is somewhat similar to LLC, that is its for a “private limited liability corporate entity that exists in France, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Monaco, Macao, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Madagascar and Lebanon, and whose purpose is commerce.”
I haven’t been able to find out how many companies are incorporated as a “Sarl” but 176 seems like a very poor showing.
