According to Reuters, the former Mayor of new York City, Michael Bloomberg has “called off the purchase of a slew of website domain names that insult and belittle him and his work”
“The move came a day after reports that two law firms working for Bloomberg had purchased about 400 such online domains.
The domains included bloombergfail.nyc, mikethespoiler.nyc and kingmike.nyc, according to an online registry. Others were more insulting, such as mikeistoorich.nyc and michaelbloombergistooshort.nyc.
The purchase of negative website domains is a common strategy among politicians and other public figures in an effort to protect their reputations.
Bloomberg spokeswoman Meghan Womack said his lawyers had been “overly-aggressive” in trying to protect Bloomberg.
We have requested the immediate release of any domains that are not straightforward,” she said.
The release meant the domains would be publicly available”
A slew of media reports came out after Domainnamewire.com, reported that the former Mayor registered hundreds of .NYC domain names some of which were very defensive in nature.
The DomainNameWire.com story was picked up by major media outlets and tonight its seems the former Mayor is using the grace period delete which applies to new gTLD’s as well as .com which in the domain industry circle known as domain tasting.
Good to know that major media outlets do in fact read and acknowledge domain blogs and effects even the former Mayor of New York
Hats off to Andrew.
Andrew Allemann says
Huh, I thought the add-grace period was only 5 days? If so, did he maybe pull some strings?
goldspiral says
some pigs are more equal than others
welcome to the USSA
numedia says
Does that mean .London will pull ahead of .NYC if these are released?
janedoe says
Doesn’t this smack of PR to promote .NYC
Former Mayor of NYC registers 400 .NYC, gets into the news, makes more news giving up the domains.
Domain tasting if expired probably extended as part of the PR stunt to promote .NYC
I am way to cynical surely
Motion says
You are an idiot. This smack right in there.
janedoe says
No, not an idiot, just forgetful that tongue in cheek doesn’t work very well online because people don’t read humour into comments without being hit over the head with the inflatable bat to point out it was meant in humour.
😉
But there you go.
Motion says
Unfortunately true, and i have seen similar comments delivered in all seriousness, hence my immediate reaction. But all in all this was a giant win for .nyc promotion and publicity. With over 20 large media sources in both print and online. Will be very interesting to watch .nyc going forward.
Motion says
Sorry it was my first reaction words. No, billionaire mayor wouldnt want to put his name through shit storm for .nyc promotion where he no longer mayor. I think thats a more appropriate response.
Gordo Granudo says
Sounds like someone got shitty, 1990’s era advice to begin with, then someone with an IQ above 100 pointed out that not only does holding such domains smack of fragile ego insecurity, but it is 100% impossible to ‘domain’ your way out of a derogatory site. Impossible.
Go ahead. Own BloombergSucks.nyc.
BloombergReallySucks.nyc will work just as well for its purpose.
Back in the old days, things like ‘sucks’ domains had their moment in the sun. Anyone who still is involved with that narrative is a stupid has-been who remains stuck in the early 2000’s. My guess is someone came along and pointed out how stupid it was to own those names in the first place.
