The second of three rounds of .NYC landrush auctions closed today with the highest (yes pun intended) .NYC sale to date.
The domain name Marijuana.NYC sold today for a whopping $60,920
Earlier this week the domain name cannabis.nyc” sold for just $3,600 in the first of three landrush auction rounds.
You can read our report on the 1st .NYC landrush auction here
Once again we start with some disclaimers:
These numbers are unofficial.
These figures, did not come from the .NYC registry or Neustar the operator of the extension or SnapNames.com which held the auction. All these numbers came from bidders that may have won or lost landrush auctions.
All numbers are rounded off.
Here are some of the winning bids according to some of those involved:
The domain name MedicalMarijuana.nyc sold today for $5,000. Medical Marijuana was approved to be sold legally in the state of New York, recreational use is still illegal.
OfficeFurniture.nyc sold for over 9,000
manhattanapartments.nyc sold form over $8,200
pilates.nyc sold for over $7,000
manhattancondos.nyc sold for over $5,500
Limousines.nyc sold for close to $4K
Its interesting to note that according to reports there were not a lot of bidders in any of the .NYC auctions with most auctions having 5 or less bidders but still the few in the closed auction believed the domain names were valuable and drove the prices up
iAlan.com says
While LUV.NYC sold for $535. I was one of the bidders but lost.

I didnt think a lot of auctions would go so high, and i am sure it was 2 big end users going for Marijuana. Too specific. Interesting to see companies in that space start putting value.
dotnyc says
physicaltherapy.nyc went for 14K

Along the same lines, how much do you think Herb.NYC is worth?
dotnyc says
not 60k but maybe in the teens
Matt Rsr says
lol
it was a hand reg in the beginning of the month with no competition
now its in the teens.
:)))))))))))))))))))
These things are going up fast!!
:))))))))))
Motion says
Right now no one knows. I wouldn’t say teens, since i think right now there is large drop off from 60k and 14k which is second highest name. Right now its more or less speculation, too early to tell. We need to wait for a) dust to settle and b) public auctions . Which should put a price bar for a lot things. One closed auction of 60k doesnt mean squat aside from 60k number. I want too see high fives and low sixes numbers or more, consistently, before putting any price tags.

UnitedStates.NYC is currently on Sedo auctions.
Motion says
crappy name, so no one cares.

UnitedStates.NYC is a horrible name
Michael Berkens says
So are you saying the domain would have sold for less in an open auction?
I think $60K in a closed auction of a small number of participants is pretty impressive
Motion says
Oh i personally as happy as a peach, and yes i am sure in the open auction it would have sold for same or more. Since i think its probably first real big end user sale and in closed auction. It just in domains people get over excited too fast. I personally think on some verticals .nyc will be better then dot com , but it will happen in 3-5 year range. Open auction will establish certain ceiling, and i am sure we will some 7 digit numbers in the open auction on some of the super premium domains. But its in due time, right now herb doesn’t worth teens, in year or 2 possibly. I just find people tend to extrapolate too much from one sale on a current price of their domains.

Pump up your own extension by buying your own name for 60 grand. Whoever really believes this sale then I have a nice bridge Ill let go for cheap.
Motion says
I do believe that sale. I been in both round of auctions and it gets hot, i haven’t seen any shill bidding, and if they chose to shill bid it would not have been Marijuana, not exactly name you want to know for big sale for publicity. . And who ever got that buy, probably happy as a clam.
todd says
“and if they chose to shill bid it would not have been Marijuana, not exactly name you want to know for big sale for publicity.”
You’re wrong. This is the perfect name you would want to use for publicity. Marijuana is edgy and cool right now and all of the news markets report on it. If it was cars.nyc do you really think any of the big players would want to report on it. Nope!
Motion says
you are mistaken. Marijuana still is illegal in nyc, so its not cool and edgy if you live here. Also i have been in the auctions and see whats happening, and talked to people who been in the auctions.
You are totally wrong, if it was Cars.nyc (which by the way will be sold at premium auction) , they would actually promote it a lot more.
Keep in mind, city has 40% stake in extension, if you think Marijuana is cool and edgy for them, you are sooo mistaken. I also have meet with main registrar people and know their idea on extension, and you are wrong there too. To me you sound ignorant, but hey we all have our opinions. When apples are apples, they are not oranges trying to posse as apples.
todd says
I am not saying it is cool and edgy to .NYC or the city officials but I am saying it is cool and edgy to the very people that the news is reported to. This is why it would be plastered all of the news channels. Good marketing is good marketing even when it’s bad marketing.
Regardless, I still believe it’s a bullshit sale.
Motion says
By the way who is already updated, it was real sale. look it up. Guy is a doctor.

i registered for .nyc domain in august but received “error on registration” email saying that my domain was not registered. Does anyone know what can be done if anything? Thank you.
Michael Berkens says
Is New York City domain name
Really they are pumping up the bid on a domain auction?
I ‘m sure city hall was all busy with that

i registered for .nyc domain in august but received “error on registration” email saying that my domain was not registered. I checked the domain is now owned by some other person and was registered couple of days after I received the email. Do you know if and how to fix it? Thank you.
janedoe says
If there was an error on registration then the registration didn’t occur and you needed to re-register (most likely via a different agency)
Once it is registered to someone else, you are out of luck unless you have a relevant trademark in the trademark clearing house and can put forward an argument that it was registered without a “valid” reason
Translation, find another domain name and move on, try to buy off the registrant or go the legal route, those are your options
