The number of new gTLD domain name registrations topped the 2.5 million mark for the first time yesterday  as .NYC  awarded over 2,900 domain names in the land rush program which ended yesterday, blowing away all previously new gTLD launches in terms of domain names awarded in Sunrise and Landrush (or equivalent Early Access Programs) where registrants paid an extra fee to get early access to register domain names.

However the .NYC landrush number does not include any landrush domain  in which 2 or more people applied for the same name, as those domains are heading off to landrush auctions

.melbourne which just finished it Priority Phase with 856 domain name registrations.  The Priority Phase was for “trademark holders, government organizations, and existing .au web address registrants which were given priority over the general public to register a .melbourne web address”.

The general public was not eligible to register web addresses during Priority Phase.

.Brussels which just completed its Sunrise period for trademark holders has over 1,200 registered domains  which breaks the record for the most Sunrise registrations for any new gTLD.

The actual number of new gTLD domain names stands at 2,518,231.

As for the new gTLD’s totals, the figures always comes with a lot of caveats:

The new gTLD with the most number of registrations is .XYZ which sits at 553,176.

Of course anytime you chat about .XYZ you have to note that approximately 377,000 free domains were given away by Network Solutions or over 68% of all .XYZ registrations, (although it appears some NetSol customers have gone ahead and deleted their free registrations) .

The balance of the registrations, 23% of all registrations have been registered at 3 domain name registrars; Japanese domain name registrar, GMO Internet, Inc. d/b/a Onamae.com has 58,419 registrations representing 10.56% of all .XYZ Registrations, the Chinese registrar, Xin Net Technology Corporation has 58,098 domain registrations representing 10.50% of all .XYZ registration and Australian registrar Crazy Domains FZ-LLC has 14,833 .XYZ domains registered representing 2.68% of all .XYZ domains;  all three of which are selling .XYZ for around $1 USD. So basically 90% of all .XYZ registrations are free or priced at the retail price of around $1.

.Berlin which is the second most registered new gTLD with over 139,000 registrations had over 50% of these were registered for free by two domain holders.

Over 86,000 of the 2.5 million domain names were registered by North Sound Names or Frank Schilling which owns Uniregistry in Uniregistry’s own extensions. representing 65% of all Uniregistry registered domain names

Of the 10,900 .Voting domain names registered, over 97% were registered by a company associated to the registry.

With that said, there are three new gTLD’s with more than 100,000 registrations; .XYZ, .Berlin and .Club which passed 114,000 registrations.

There are 9 new gTLD extensions with more than 40,000 registrations; 14 with 30,000 or more; 21 with 20,000 or more registrations; 29 with 15,000 or more registrations; 50 extensions with 10,000 or more, and 98 with 5,000 domain name registrations or more.

On the other hand there are 91 fully launched new gTLD’s with 2,500 or less registrations.
