New Go Daddy Phishing Email Going Around – Be Careful

August 17, 2014 by Raymond Hackney

New Go Daddy phishing email going around so be careful. I have not received it but others have. Tip of the cap to Namepros member Tom Carl for posting the email he received. Most veterans would not fall for this but there are many newer domainers and business owners who may not know what to look for.

Email subject: Status Alert: Your account contains more than 9740 directories.
Dear Valued GoDaddy Customer.

Your account contains more than 937 directories and may pose a potential performance risk to the server.
Please reduce the number of directories for your account to prevent possible account deactivation.

In order to prevent your account from being locked out we recommend that you create special tmp directory

Use link below:

————————————-

Then it appears to be a normal godaddy link using <a href> but it redirects to swtest.ru (Don’t click there)

They disguised their click-thru link good too by putting www.godaddy.com.asp.2949482983982928theirsite.ru

Could maybe have fooled some newcomers.

What happens if you click? I clicked it and then realized it was a scam by where it redirected (the from email was servers@godaddy.com so I thought it might actually be real at first.) Once I clicked on it I closed out but is there anything bad that happens if you just click the link from the email?

I know its been months since you asked but,

I am pretty sure that it cannot get into your website, unless you noticed it download something onto your computer. If that happened it could be malware, spam, Trojan, virus etc… and one or more could be a key-logger program so they could potentially get more of your passwords and accounts. But considering it is a phishing email, my guess is that they just wanted you to log into your godaddy account on their servers just to get your info.

But unless you saw it download something, or you entered in your info on that site, the worst they have is your email, which they had before anyway.
