Hollywood and fans around the world lost one of its most popular and famous icons on Monday. Robin Williams passed away from an apparent suicide at the age of 63.
Robin Williams won an academy award for Good Will Hunting, I always thought just the scenes of him and Matt Damon talking alone made the movie great all by itself. I am always interested in the dialogue far and away above any other component of a movie and those scenes made that one of my all time favorite movies.
After the news broke a few were quick to register domain names in what for the most part look to be at least respectful with no idiotic trash or slanderous type registrations, including:

R.I.P. Robin

Conceivably, a handful of these domain registrations are meant as an homage — that is, with the intent of developing a retrospective website to honor Robin Williams.
Yet obviously the majority of registrants are simply seeking to profit from the untimely passing of one of the world’s most beloved creative talents. Profit? If at all, then one nickel click at a time. Many will be rubbing their hands together gleefully in expectation of some pie-in-the-sky sale. Not only shameful but pathetic!
I don’t much care whether the domains themselves appear neutral rather than slanderous. The only reason they’re neutral is in the hope of attracting neutral search traffic and cashing in.
With apologies in advance to members of the domain community who are honorable individuals, overall I can never feel proud to be part of the domaining world. There’s just too much money-grubbing venality. A few good apples can’t save the bunch.

Oh Joseph I am in full agreement, my point was with some others like Michael Jackson, I saw terrible domains registered.
Hopefully those who want to pay homage do it in a non commercial way or a real class move would be to donate profits to an organization dealing with mental health or suicide prevention.
Joseph Peterson says
Yes, I know the stuff you’re referring to. And naturally I know what you mean. My comments in this case aren’t aimed at you, Raymond. They’re aimed at registrants and passers by.
Basically, I want to lose no time in condemning this practice of squatting on the names of the recently departed. It undermines the credibility of the domain industry as a whole. And it’s unlikely to make these people money anyway. And it’s in contemptible taste.
Certainly, I’m not convinced that registrants are going to rush out to park domains about Robin Williams simply in order to donate their $2.17 in proceeds to charity. It’s a nice suggestion, Raymond. But I see no reason to be nice.

Back in the day I remember when someone would reg something and list on Namepros we would get a bunch of people to pm RJ to not allow the listing. There was no spin they were doing it for homage or anything it was just a straight for sale listing, and to his credit RJ took them down. It is a disgusting practice, makes everyone in the field look bad and adds fuel to the fire for those who already hate the practice of domaining.
On a side note its the second person involved with Good Will Hunting, Elliot Smith who had his song Miss Misery nominated for an Oscar also committed suicide, another great talent that left way too early.
Joseph Peterson says
Right.
