Radix the registry operator of .Website just announced the timeline for the release of the new gTLD extension which they are calling “The first true alternative to .com”
Here is the some of the Press release:
“Website will become the first all-purpose domain extension available for registration when it launches into Sunrise on June 24, 2014.
Radix, .website’s registry and the largest new gTLD registry based in Asia, released a complete launch timeline for .website today, outlining a Landrush start date of Aug. 26, 2014 and a General Availability start date of Sept. 17, 2014.
While most new gTLDs launched so far are niche extensions, presenting “new dot” options for geographic regions, cultural groups or vertical markets, .website offers open registration to every user, for any application, making it the first extension that competes in the same market as .com.
“We’re very enthusiastic to launch .website, because it’s a strong mass market new gTLD that has immense potential,” said Radix Founder, Bhavin Turakhia. “We’re already working closely with channel partners across the globe who’ve shown keen interest in pioneering the development of the .website extension.”
There are more than 113 million .com domain names registered, according to current market research, making it extremely difficult to secure a first-choice .com domain name. In fact, 65% of all checks for .com domain name availability fail and half of all customers buying a new domain name have to try two or more times to register a name of their choosing. The frustratingly limited .com space makes new domain options like .website a top priority in the digital marketplace, and for Radix.
During Sunrise, trademark owners may register their trademark and brand .website domain names. Landrush is a priority registration period for registering keyword-rich and quality .website domains before they become available on a first-come, first-serve basis in General Availability.
About .Website:
.Website is Radix’s flagship extension, offering a truly generic new gTLD offering open use to all users, for any application, spanning industries, communities, cultures and languages. .website is one of the top three generic new gTLDs favored by small business owners, existing domain owners and white collar executives, according to market research, and it perfectly embodies and symbolizes a customer’s online identity.
About Radix:
Radix (Radix FZC), is an active participant in the new gTLD program and has applied for registry rights to 22 new gTLDs, and securing uncontested registry rights for .host, .website, .press and .space, all launching in 2014. Radix is Asia’s largest new gTLD applicant, and expects to play a large role in the global diversification of the Internet namespace.

I can imagine that there is a number of entities that actually want to buy a “.website” – especially those who are not really very much into the “Internet”, don’t have one right now but will be endlessly proud to finally “have a website”.
I would advertise “.website” to the mom and pop business world out there – people who need a robust, nondescript gTLD that is easy to communicate. But I can already imagine how the communication part goes all wrong when they try to explain the “.website” part 😉

Ever heard of .ws, this is another dot extension that will ultimately fail, 99 cents?
nobody says
that’s akin to as if .business would start competeting with .biz as this .website to .net, .web but worse as it’s much longer

.Web will be better………

Yes, why would anyone want any of those pesky 2-4 character domains when they can have 7 characters to the right of the dot. Websites using these great new long GLTDs will be particularly popular with mobile users. I know all that typing always makes me appreciate the destination all that much more.

First “true alternative to .com?” I don’t think so. First ‘true alternative to .info’ is more like it.
