In a blog post tonight the founder and CEO of the .XYZ registry made a bold of a prediction I have seen from any registry saying that; There is no doubt in my mind that the growth rate of .xyz will surpass the growth rate of .com. It won’t take us 20 years to reach one million registrations. It will only take 1 year.”
.XYZ go on sale with general availability through over 200 domain name registrars today at noon EST.
Pricing for .XYZ like all domain registrations vary by registrar but a quick check of some of my favorites indicate a price of around $10-$15 per registration.
According to the post there are no premium renewal domains and only a few thousand reserved domains.
Daniel went even further in his post saying that; “Soon we will see that there is only one competitor to .com, and that is .xyz.”
Mr. Negari said that his company has already spend “millions of dollars marketing .XYZ
Daniel finished up his post by saying:
“Despite having transacted over $100 million in domain name sales in the aftermarket while still controlling one of the strongest .com portfolios, I am going all-in on .xyz. While I believe premium .com domains will continue to appreciate with the prominent usage of the extension for many years to come, I also recognize the value of investing in new internet users and their needs.
.xyz is the future.
It is for your kids, your grandkids, and even your great grandkids.
Twenty years from now, the internet landscape will be very different than it is today. Everyone already knows that you end the alphabet with “XYZ,” and soon everyone will know that you end a domain name the same way.
.xyz is my gift to the world.
You now have a better understanding of my vision and the future of the internet, and this is your chance to be a part of it.
You have the opportunity to be one of the early adopters and I urge you to take advantage of your newfound knowledge.
You heard it straight from the source.”
As of publication there are about 850,000 new gTLD registered.
Good Luck Daniel.

I’ll be surprised if .xyz will get more than 20,000 registrations by the end of the year.
What serious company would want a domain name with .xyz at the end? Sure, it’s the last letters of the alphabet, so what? I don’t see how that makes it good, nor why that would be a selling point.
Time will tell I guess but I sure won’t be registering any .xyz.

Who said we’re running out of dot com?
ceoxyz.com is available for hand reg. as I write this comment.
Volker Greimann says
How is ceoxyz.com better than ceo.xyz?
Raymond Hackney says
Here is the one fallacy, kids, grandkids and great grandkids don’t have a need for a domain extension, it is certainly not a gift and even if it were taught to them that it was a gift, they would return it for some Beats By Dre.
These are generations growing up believing everything online should be free, they won’t pay to toss off to their favorite adult actress but will pay $15 for a new gtld ? They have tumblr and love it, they have snapchat and love it, secret, ask.fm, twitter, facebook, etc…
I don’t have a problem with .xyz and I can see some adoption by a younger generation if they are marketed to properly. I don’t root for failure so I hope Daniel does well.
This means little to me as a domain investor, because I don’t own a piece of .xyz which will for the most part be a reg fee extension, it could get a lot of regs even, but how many people are buying my hand reg for $3000, I am not someone who prices domains at max pricing but there are many who believe it is not worth their time to research and reg and get anything less than five figures. The kids, grand kids and great grand kids are not paying that kind of money.
So now we need to have businesses adopt the extension, doesn’t that go against the message ? This is Pepsi circa 1980’s The Taste of a New Generation. So while that campaign is going on are we also marketing to stodgy old men who are going to pay $5000 for a .XYZ ?
Is there any transparency report on the millions that have been spent on marketing so far ? It should be fairly easy to point to where the extension has been marketed because someone would have had to see the marketing in full effect.

The other day I saw a .photography domain on someone’s business card – but he was a techie. I’ve seen 1 UK registrar market the new domains, apart from this no marketing whatsoever in the UK. Perhaps if .xyz was a cheap / free domain then that 1000000 milestone may be reachable.

“HOW ABOUT NOT”
@Raymond Hackney,
I want to go on record now, for the 5th time to say that I’m not against any entrepreneur that is pushing any product or services. My main concern remains the getting to the truth of what will happen in the future regarding internet naming protocol, especially the potential for loss of capital in investments by new domain investors.
In my opinion, the best article ever written by any domain industry professional is MY FIRST YEAR IN THE DOMAIN BUSINESS: A ROOKIE’S DIARY By Ron Jackson, and it should be a permanent fixture on all blogs. See: http://www.dnjournal.com/columns/coverstory5.htm
It captures what so many go through each time they venture to join this industry. It’s a must read, and ties into vetting any and all claim by all extensions.
It is nothing personal. It is simply challenging ideas and claims to arrive at the truth, or closer to it.
Raymond Hackney says
How About Not ? What was that too, and secondly I did not say anything about you that you had to go on the record. Thirdly I have read that article from Ron a few times and always put Ron at the top of the industry.
I think I have also asked the same questions you mentioned, the one question we would like to be answered cannot be answered. Anyone saying they “KNOW” what the Internet will look like in 2030, is a liar. There can be educated opinions but no one knows, and finally if this business was easy and guaranteed 200 million people minimum would be doing it worldwide.
Domenclature.com says
HOW ABOUT NOT was an exclamation by Jackson in the piece, that I found funny and interesting. No, I’m down with ya, Hackney. You’re alright.

Daniel Negari`s arrogance tell me that he is scared to death now.
He invested too much money and time and now he is convincing himself.
Unfortunately, he has been brainwashed by his own talk.
I cannot recall any newTLD which is so much, unanimously disliked by so many people as .xyz.
dotnormal says
“History mocks arrogance.” That seems like a very relevant quote after reading the comments on ceo.xyz.
My prediction: .xyz will not even be in the top 10 of new gTLDs by years end.
Also, It is not true that xyz is an “extension that has no connotation or meaning”. It does mean the last three letters of the alphabet. But, when combined with keywords as domains, they will definitely become nonsensical, if that is a selling point…
Domainer Extraordinaire says
“I am going all-in on .xyz.”
Common sense wins, you lose. This is like deja vu only it was Frank’s desparation statements a few weeks ago. Your desparaion statements will die down fast just like Ftank’s did.
“.xyz is my gift to the world.”
Usually the only time you have to pay for a gift is when you’re being scammed.
Horizon says
Sorry,I am on the fence on GTLD’s,I have a few exact match ones that fit the extensions perfectly, but only ones I can build out into sites.Mr Negari to me,sounds like a kid with all this B.S.I know he’s young, probably too young to be doing this.Remember all the multi millionare kids about 10 years ago? Peddling their web businesses, and how smart they thought they were, then BOOOM all gone because they didn’t have experience and knew it all.I only relate this because of Mr Negari’s outrages predictions.Who is he tring to convince? US or himself?
Elena says
Negari made some pretty bold statements (.xyz being the next .com, surpassing 1 million registrations in one year,…).
My bold statements:
–> .xyz will have less than 25,000 registrations at the end of the year.
–> As soon as .web comes out it will surpass the total amount of .xyz registrations within the first 1-2 months of general availability.
–> Most people registering .xyz domains will be newbie domain investors, kids and college students who want a novelty email address. No serious company or business will ever want an .xyz domain. In other words there will be no end-users (wanting to pay end-user prices) for .xyz domains acquired by domain investors.
Whatever the next best thing to .com will be, it sure won’t be .xyz. I’ll pass on this extension, thanks. Good luck to Mr Negari though.
Elena says
I also want to quote something he mentioned on his blog: “That number is completely relevant. How many people have 100,000 .com domain names; or 300,000 .com domain names? Many…. How long did it take for .com to get to 1 Million domain names as a whole – 15 years? It has been 4 months and the new gTLD program is just starting. It will hit over 1 Million domain names THIS MONTH.”
My response:
There are currently over 113 million .COM domains registered and this number continuous to growing rapidly ( http://www.statdns.com/ ).
Sure there are some domain investors which have over 100,000 .COM domain names just by themselves but that doesn’t take away the fact that there are easily 5-10 million UNIQUE .COM registrants. That’s a LOT of potential end-users and a huge resale market.
Now let’s compare this with the new gTLDs. There’s around 890,000 new gTLDs registered in about 4 months.
But sadly that’s the grand total of registrations of all of the new gTLDs extensions combined together.
890,000 registrations spread over 275 extensions, basically an average of only 3,236 registrations per new gTLD.
Source: http://ntldstats.com/tld
Those numbers are pathetic… Sure some gTLDs are doing much better than that but .xyz won’t be one of them.
Michael Bauser says
Negari’s spent “millions of dollars marketing .XYZ,” yet I still keep forgetting .xyz exists. ’nuff said.
Edward C says
I will repeat my comment from the other post.
I can envision .xyz being used . . . but to say that it’s going to be the next .com takes some very big huevos. That’s not going to happen for .xyz or any other extension. So many great options to choose from like the extensions .center .club .rentals – I just can’t imagine just one extension reigning supreme here.
DNPric.es says
#sowishfulthinking 😉
there was only a dozen of “xyz” sales in the past. Most notorious being… xyzdotcom flipped by Rick Latona four years for $50k, to … and now comes the most interesting part: .xyz registry.
Looks like the only guys interested in .xyz domain names are the inventors themselves.
Ramahn says
Pretty much.
Daniel, I have no interest in the dot xyz extension. I appreciate your ‘gift’ but no thank you. I do wish you the best though. I could relate to a lot of what you said in your Domain Sherpa interview (as discovering domains/Internet back in the 90’s). What ever comes out if this…. we can all learn from personal success and mistakes.
Patrick Hipskind says
I hope Daniel decides to play his pair of aces which is .college, instead of his pair of tens which is .xyz, before cash flow becomes a problem.

“.xyz is my gift to the world”
Yes Messiah! LOL
I don’t root for failure in anything but in this one instance I hope .XYZ bombs because you are so full of shit. Just curious how much of that million dollar marketing budget did you spend on the fat guys in the purple suits at Domainfest?
That was pure marketing genius! LOL
In less than 20 minutes .XYZ should have thousands of registrations when general availability opens. Let the laughing begin.
Patrick Hipskind says
I picked up Tutor.XYZ so there are some good keywords available. Good luck Daniel. I believe you aren’t giving enough attention to .college which could be a remarkable success.
todd says
Unfortunately Patrick that name was registered yesterday by a person named David XXXXXXX from Glendale, California. Once again their systems are all screwed up. Good job .XYZ
Today I picked up Teacher.XYZ but the Whois shows it being registered on May 29 by Ahmet XXXX in Murrieta, California. It’s in my enom account but obviously it’s another mistake by these dumbasses.
Howie Crosby says
I think it’s great that the majority of domainers dislike .xyz as the end of the day, it’s down to the client buying into the brand.
I love .xyz This is the only new gTLD I’ve bought into so far, I see it going a long way.
I’m glad I have a different view to most domainers on .xyz It was a good day yesterday.
Raymond Hackney says
Howie can you say why you like the extension ? You mention to the client buying the brand but it seems the major theme behind the extension is about kids, grand kids and great grandkids. Those are people that either have little to 0 money as they are young to not even conceived yet.
If Daniel can successfully market to a young generation to register .xyz names that’s cool, but I don’t think many will look for anything above registration fee.
DomainNameMojo says
These people may not look to renew this extension as much as mothers. It’s good to market the extension, but you must retain these customers through the renewal process.
DomainNameMojo says
This bold prediction is just a prediction. Seriously doubt this extension will come remotely close to surpassing the dot co extension rather than challenge dot com. Dot com is the first and the best.
