Switching from a .com to a .link
Jean Guillon runs newsgtlds.com and he wrote about wanting to change to a .link on gtld.club.
From the article:
This is one question that I have at the moment
Prior to the first new domain name launchings, I had created a website entitled NEWSgTLDs.com to inform about new generic Top-Level Domains. New domain names didn’t exist yet so I had to find a domain name and .COM came to my mind. I considered .INFO too but let’s make it simple : you don’t launch a website with a .INFO domain name if you don’t own the .COM so I went fo NEWSgTLDs.com.
The problem that I have now is that this website is a success and it tells you a lot of things about new gTLDs using an old .COM domain name. I feel guilty informing on the latest BMW M4 Convertible in a BMW 1 Series.
The second problem that I have is that my website offers my followers to read the information directly on authors websites and to do so, I use a simple hyperlink to point to the right webpage and that is why this case figure is interesting: there is a registry which is “new” and which is about “links”. Uniregistry is the company to have launched .LINK domain names.
My feeling of the moment
I am seriously considering using a .LINK domain name, simply because :
- My website is about “new gTLDs”;
- My website offers “links” to information.
My feeling is that I should change to a .LINK domain name for this website to match with the identity of NEWSgTLDs.com and it may be what I am going to do in the end. I could use a .DOMAINS too and they are available right away to register with GoDaddy but I really like the idea of using “.LINK” because it is why readers come to my website: to find links to the information. My info is not about “domain names” : you will probably never read about .NET domains on NEWSgTLDs.com. My info does focus on new gTLDs only.

Jean ran a poll which had 50 voters and the majority did vote for keeping the .com. Jean still feels like he wants to move to the .link. He posted on NewsGtlds.com,
50 persons voted and it appears voters want the website to keep its .COM domain name. Unfortunately, my advice is different and I will change to a .LINK domain name once I have managed to find a way to change the graphics
It is an interesting dilemma, should someone eat their own cooking as they say ? If you are focused on new gtlds might as well run your site on a new gtld.
Good luck to Jean whichever way he decides to go with the website.
