According to a story on Mashable, Google is going to launch Android TV. Ten days ago Mike wrote a post about a UDRP that Google filed on AndroidTV.com. The panelists decided that this case was outside the scope of the UDRP. You can read the case and the commentary that Mike added here.
March 31, 2014 there was a press release put out highlighting this decision. The press release contact is Mike Berkens who did not pay PR Web for the press release so this looks like it was put out by the registrant.
We also have Android.tv which was registered in 2010 to a registrant out of Slovenia, the domain does not resolve.
So now the question is will Google pay up for AndroidTV.com ? Will they take the case to another level and go to court over the domain ? The registrant did reg the domain back in 2006 and Google waited over 7 years to think about going after the name.

Samantha Murphy Kelly wrote on Mashable:
Just a few days after Amazon unveiled the Fire TV, Google will reportedly launch its own set-top box.
The Mountain View, Calif. company is close to debuting Android TV, an Android-powered platform that will compete directly with the Fire TV, Apple TV and Roku. Google will still sell its Chromecast device, a $35 dongle that plugs into any HDTV to let you watch online videos from your tablet, smartphone or computer, according to The Verge.
Video app providers are currently working hard to build for Android TV. The device will also be compatible with gaming, and come with an optional gaming controller, much like the Fire TV.
Documents obtained by The Verge outline a simpler approach than Google TV, which launched in 2010, and aimed to turn TV sets into larger versions of smartphones.
“Android TV is an entertainment interface, not a computing platform,” the document said. “Itβs all about finding and enjoying content with the least amount of friction.” It will be “cinematic, fun, fluid, and fast.”

They don’t need it.
This source of: “WOW a new service (product) has launched without owning the domain” is becoming OLD news…
Ideally will be nice to own it but is it absolutely necessary to own it?…NO!
Out of more than I Million APPS …how many own their exact domain name ?
Annyone?
I am sure they new gTLD promoters would like to believe they are waiting for DOT APP …
The fact of the matter is that people are finding or doing what they need ( via mobile devices ) without the need of an URL/Web address and this fact is rendering Millions and Millions of domains worthless and hence the secondary market (Aside ultra premium DOT COMs) is in a lot of trouble…
What I like to call the white elephant…
APPS , Social Media/Tools and the Internet of the New generation
The inconvenient news from Domainfest:
“It got interesting when Vaynerchuk predicted that the value of a good domain name will go down over the next decade or two as the importance of having a good domain name goes down”
“Vaynerchuk thinks that the importance of domain names is being eroded by other platforms such as apps. To some people, the value of getting a good app name is more important than a good domain name”
as seen on DomainNamewWire DOT COM and @ MorganLinton DOT COM…

Domo that was not the point of this article, it was because of the previous UDRP, Google in this case did want the domain AndroidTV.com. I have said plenty of times when Apple releases a product and people say they don’t own the .com its not a big deal.
I have followed Gary for a long time, and of course he mentions other platforms, Social media has made him a lot of money, just talking and writing on the topic alone.
The key imo as I have said to friends many a time, What if there are always domains, but no one pays $1,000,000 for a great one ? .COM will still resell for a great roi, but if it gets too out of hand, people might search for an alternative .com or an alt extension.
Domo Sapiens says
Thanks for your reply, don;t underestimate Gary “Social media” efforts/campaigns are measurable in tangible ways if NOT companies wouldn’t hiring him, his comments are for the most part way ahead of his time (eg: cryptocurrencies)..
And for SERIOUS companies that DON’T choose a dot com (Or and their respective Country Codes) sooner or later they find themselves sailing against the wind…
Nearly after 1 and half hours of watching CNN and CNBC simultaneously there is been NOTHING but Dot Com URLS shown/served during the Ads (small medium and large companies, even local ads) or even only Dot Com has been mentioned during the reporters commentaries….
Any clearer?
Please Let me know when your blog or thedomains change to an alternate extension π

I like Gary and I focus on social media so I am on board with that. My point was not to go with an alt extension, my point was someone asking $1,000,000 10 years from now may seem over the top because of so much choice, I don’t think Gary thinks a good domain will not have value but maybe not as much value. My point was they will still be in use but might not have the high price tag, didn’t you say you see millions of domains becoming worthless ? Except for ultra premium .coms.?
I don’t think the ultra premium 10 years from now can be exponentially higher, while millions of other domains become worthless.
I always think if you take the time and have some creativity and some budget you can always find a .com. The new gtlds will have their fans and some businesses will take a chance they are then going to have to work hard and pay attention how their new gtld name is received from a customer recognition standpoint.
Domo Sapiens says
Agree on everything, except
1) I didn’t say Dot Com will command higher prices in the future prices than now I think by now they have reached some type of Plateau/Benchmark, but who knows..?
Speaking solely of “premium/Category defining domains”…They could NOT consolidate anymore as the “Blue Chips” “Prime Real Estate” “The busiest Virtual Intersections”….
2) “my point was someone asking $1,000,000 10 years from now may seem over the top because of so much choice, ”
You could buy land in the Dessert and build you a shopping center or you could buy land in a busy intersection in the city and do the same …
Has Rodeo Drive Land, Manhattan, Las Vegas Strip, Miami Beach prices etc etc…changed a lot from ten years ago? which way…up? down? level?
Just factor in which way the masses have moved their shopping to…? brick and Mortar or Online? what is the trend?
Talking about the devil…
The Frager just touched on Gary’s comments @ domainfest… and for the most part also agreed with him.

domo, your posts are ridiculous. omg they’re using a .com while accepting gTLD’s OMG OMG OMG.. welp, that settles it. proof! debate over!
do i need to live in a gingerbread house to sell candy?
HELP.org says
I think Domo is right-on. Not that .com is worthless overnight but it is being substituted with other things, mostly due to mobile apps and API’s. Short is better than .com for mobile.

Am I the like the only person these days who doesn’t really use apps? I keep seeing arguments around like the above but honestly when you need to look something up or do something do you use an app or just the plain old interwebs? I find apps rigid and impractical. To just go nuts downloading apps (especially the non-free variety) and trying them all out to see if they do what you intend for them to do and delete those which don’t seems even more impractical to me. The interwebs I’ve got my trusty back button, new tab button and close tab button which greatly simplifies the task. I do actually have a ton of apps I seem to have accumulated on my iPhone over the years but I regularly use like only 3 of them. I regularly consider deleting like 98% of the apps off of my phone.
Just coz everybody interacts with their online banking via an app (btw which in my case provides very limited functionality compared to the web site) doesn’t mean you use an app when you want to know what time it is in Australia, or how much something costs or whatever. Seems like overkill to me. I find it annoying to hunt around for all those little icons even though I have taken such care to organize them. Interwebs I type in the web address done. Much faster.
Or maybe I’m just getting old or something and all this app stuff is much easier for today’s youngsters than it is for me.
