The French Really Are Different: .Paris Announces 100 Pioneer Domain Names

February 27, 2014 by Michael Berkens

viewmultimediadocument

The city of Paris released today the names of 100 Pioneers (Les pionniers ambassadeurs) for the new gTLD .Paris.

For 6 months, these Pioneers will be the only ones using .Paris domain names, and will participate in all events around the launch of .Paris.

The 100 pioneers were selected by a Jury which used several criteria mentioned in the call for proposals Pioneers :

• The candidate must have an original project.

A pioneer can not simply propose a redirection of its .Paris domain name to a .fr or existing com. It can be used to move its .Fr or .Com domain to a .Paris, but ideally the best project is to create a new site or a new service with the difficulty of convincing the jury on the quality and ability to produce a new project in time.

• The significance of the proposed vis- à-vis the overall .Paris project.

The candidate must demonstrate and explain how the project inserted in the industry, is emblematic or exemplary for Paris, what its symbolic contribution in the construction of this new digital territory.

• The economic contribution can be in cash (with a minimum varies according to the category selected ) and in kind including communication actions to further increase awareness of the project .Paris candidate and the overall project .

So here are the winners some of the winner and the first 100 .Paris domain names. You can see the whole list with more information here.

Government and culture are intertangled in France in ways surprising to Americans in particular. Just look at L’Académie française. Even their language is governed. My impression is that official governance is taken as a sign of esteem, whereas I — as an American — would feel government regulation to be intrusive. All this is simplistic, of course.
