A couple weeks back Mike did a story on IOT.com and its $2.8 million price tag. Some people have left comments or emailed asking more about what exactly the Internet of Things (IOT) really is.
Pocket-Lint did a piece on IOT yesterday that is a good read for those interested in learning more. From the article:
What is Internet of Things?
The Internet of Things (IoT, for short) is a phrase for when everyday objects are connected to the internet and participating together on a system, though it also means the convergence of conventional connected devices and smart appliances.
The Internet of Things was recently one of the stars of the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where we saw many start-ups and manufacturers introduce web-connected products with smartphone apps or access to social networks.
Although these are considered connected devices, they’re also basic IoT devices. You see, there are many IoT hardware and software platforms being developed that could allow such connected devices to collaborate. Companies spearheading these systems include Sen.se, Arduino, ThingWorx3 and others.
The goal is to have people seamlessly retrieve knowledge and function on a day-to-day basis without having to sit down at a computer or talk to another human. It’s like ubiquitous computing, but it goes beyond Google Glass and extends to every home, car, business, building and system in the world.
Who coined Internet of Things?
Kevin Ashton supposedly coined the phrase “Internet of Things” while working for Procter & Gamble in 1999. He later co-founded the Auto-ID Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Ashton talked in depth about IoT to the RFIDJournal.com in 2009.

Here is a video from IBM that is very good and worth watching if you are interested in IOT:

jose says
that’s no paradigm change. it’s a evolution. and a natural and expected one since the late 90’s. the rest is hype as usual.
Ramahn says
Agree with @Jose, its the natural/logical next thing. The “hype” is that you are hearing about the big guys Google, Cisco, IBM, etc pour Billions into IOT so that they will be front runners. Small startups are joining in (applications, devices, security, etc)…lots of opportunity and jobs.
Thanks for the video.
Steven Sikes says
The first big acquisition within the IOThings arena was this week: the startup Nest, acquired by Google for $3.2 Billion (for: platform, technology, IP, analytics, & 100 former Apple Senior Engineers)
Raymond Hackney says
Thanks for the comments guys.

As a domainer, I see this as a brand new niche to invest in. Talk of a multi trillion dollar industry in the making is not to be sneezed at. Was able to bag myself this today on Godaddy auctions:
InternetofMe.com
Raymond Hackney says
That’s an interesting reg 3D. Best of luck.
Louise says
it is a term industry coined because SmartLabs owns SmartHome.com, a showcase of security, solar, surveillance, door locks, cameras, thermastats, and other devices available for purchase now . . . Looks profitable to me.
So industry coined, Internet of Things, and Internet of Everything.
Consumers know Smart Home. Consumers are the target.
Raymond Hackney says
The Internet of Things is about far more than smart homes.
jose says
agree. it ranges from wearable computers to tags on products and passing by our cars the electronics in our homes. imagine everything being connect in one gigantic network. machines, people, goods, etc. and the network can span from under the earth to space.
Ramahn says
3Dprintman: good pick up. I think the term could spin off like that (Internet of ________) but id bet on the term/acronym ‘IOT’ as being the way people will become to know it. Different from SEO, FYI, DIY, etc. It’ll be interesting to see how Iot + keyword (and vice versa) .coms do.
Ramahn says
*No different from SEO……
3Dprintman says
@Ramahn
Thanks, I’ve already registered a shedload of Internetof _____’s
eg. Travel, Tech, Sex, Porn, Fun, Games, Gaming, Love, TV, Shopping, Commerce, etc.
As far as IOT domains are concerned, the world’s your oyster, its a relatively untapped market. Plus the more I read about IOT, the more variables become apparent.
Ramahn says
Agreed my man.
Ramahn says
Nice pick ups by the way. Def hold onto those.
Louise says
Internet of Things is a lame industry term substituting for, “smart home,” because John Chambers and all of them do not want to give SmartHome.com any more business than it already gets.
jose says
search for sensor networks, ubiquity, mobile computing, and you will see how iot and other definitions come together. it’s not just what you have in house
Louise says

Those are as wide open opportunities to invest as internet of things.
Rick Schwartz, Michael Berkens, and Stephen Douglas taught me, it is the company that owns the keyword dot com, who owns the space.
Internet of Things makes sense is the Asian world.
For the US, Canada, and Australia, the term connectivity is known by, is “smart home.”
What becomes apparent is the lack of appreciation – even at the executive level – of the defining keyword dot com, SmartHome.com. If Google just bought Nest for billions, SmartLabs would be worth billions, but the tech leaders are in denial.
Steven Sikes says
“Smart Things”, not just “Smart Homes”: healthcare, hospitality, travel, eCommerce (e.g., Amazon — using sensors and predictive analytics to ship prior to click), public transit, education, agriculture, law, government, retail (customer “readers”), financial, real estate, entertainment (pop up stream offering based on mood, time restriction, preferences, location), and much more.

Louise says
You agree they’re two different things: shipping, agriculture, hospitals, oil refineries, trains, planes,
and
homes?
One industrial, and one consumer.
Louise says
All the recent news about, “internet of things,” is about companies really wanting to become your smart home.Tech firms don’t want to sell to industry, which already has its systems of sensors and remote controls in place.
Tech firms want to sell to consumers! It’s all about the consumer . . .
Go ahead and register internet of things domain names. Maybe I’m wrong. There is more opportunity in, smart home names, is my opinion, such as SmartHomeCameras.com – still available.

What does m2m stand for?
jose says
mobile to mobile
Steven Sikes says
I’m building a prototype of an app/site for sensors (based on location, as well as users (in conjunction w/their wearables, telemetrry, telematics)
I picked up some IOE – Internet of Everything as well as IOT (Internet of Things) domains, when I thought up the app a while back.
Trying to decide which to go with for the name of the App/site
IOTHERE.com
The-IOT.com
IOEvery.com
IOENOW.com
IOEME.com
LIVEIOE.com
SMARTIOE.COM
YOURIOE.COM
IOEGRAPH.com
any feedback appreciated.
Louise says
@ jose, Good guess. It’s not “mobile-to-mobile.”
@ Steven Sikes, I like the-iot.com the best.
Louise says
m2mhub.com 2,200 USD Sedo October 16, 2013
Louise says
Look who bought it:
http://m2mhub.com
jose says
@louise. that is the original meaning of m2m. you can use it now also for machine to machine.
Louise says
Sorry the link doesn’t work without, “www:” http://www.m2mhub.com
@ jose, you’re right! I stand corrected. M2m could mean minutes to midnight, or month to month, as well!
http://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/M2M
jose says
hehehe. that’s the beauty of acronyms and short domains. we can get any meaning we want and they can change over time.
Steven Sikes says
Right, in telephony, M2M signifies “machine to machine”
