Jodee Rich just finished off one of the Keynote Speeches from this mornings Namescon session and had some interesting comments.
I also had the chance to chat with Jodee last night at dinner for a couple of hours and he is definitely an out of the box thinker.
Mr. Rich’s company applied to operate the .CEO and .Best new gTLD.
Mr. Rich’s company also operates People Browser, a social network platform that is adaptable to a endless amount of verticals as well as Kred which looks to be a Klout type product.
Although Jodee has gone into the domain name business, he is not planning on selling domain names, he is going to sell Domain Identities.
So Jodee is not very impressed that it has taken over 25 years since the first .com was registered to get up to 265 Million domains in existence and thinks that there will be 1 billion Domain names in existence in 3 years.
Well not domain names.
Domain Identities.
So in the case of a .CEO domain people are not just buying a .CEO domain name they are buying something that identifies them as a .CEO or in the case of a New Yorker a .NYC address or in the case of someone in the horse industry a .Horse address or a lover or player of golf a .Golf domain identity.
When you buy a “domain name” you are also joining the community of .CEO’s or New Yorkers or those in the Horse industry or of avid Golfers or someone in the Golf industry.
You become part of the social network which matches the domain identity, which is powered by People Browser.
Its an interesting and different approach and Jodee is planning on offering the People Browser social networking engine to all new gTLD registries and is even working on locking up the same keyword to the left of the dot for each right of the dot new gTLD extensions.

its going to take more than spin and wordplay to convince people i’m afraid.

The problem with .BEST is he is already starting with backwards logic because no one talks like that. dog.best, car.best etc…..backwards means bust. I don’t see a market for .CEO either because how many CEO’s want to have an individual web presence. Most CEO’s I know want to be more private and less transparent. Doesn’t make sense.

It reminds me of the guy that walked into a traffic violations Court, and said to the Judge: “your Honor, I was minding my own business driving on that street, and when I thought about turning around, I said to my self ‘no I really shouldn’t turn around here’, but I saw a sign that says NO U TURN. So I did, and the cop gave me this ticket. I don’t know how the sign got into my thinking process to persuade me out of my original thoughts”.
This anecdote basically goes to the insufficiency of semantics.
The traffic ticket guy above knows fully well the sign was not having a conversation with him, and definitely was not saying to him ‘NO, YOU, TURN’.

Terrible presentation if you ask me…
“When you buy a “domain name” you are also joining the community of .CEO’s”
Only a weak minded person will buy that.
In addition the same logic that Todd is using applies to nearly all the Spanish New gTLD they plain don’t make sense…
eg:
Nueva.Casa will make as much sense as HomeNew.com
Grammatically incorrect.
Zero resale value and Zero SEO value.
backwards and awkward.

Does anyone introduce themselves as CEO?
It would be amateurish to do that. I can’t imagine anyone over 16 years old wanting a ceo domain
Ryan Jenkins says
DUMB.CEO is the only one you need, what employee base will respect some idiot .ceo who thinks he is better than the rest, and deserves a dunce.ceo designation.
This one is going to zero, I would rather burn my money in a casino, can they really be that out of touch.

I am appalled by the above comments, truly appalled. As a 30+ year CEO of my personal bank account, I find your attitudes profoundly appalling. Now if I can just stop this incessant drooling, I can get back to writing some more checks.
aldis browne says
And when networks and publications are born to unite the best of these ‘identities’ could they be on any TLD but .com?
Alan says
As for all of these new tlds coming out, suffice it to say that I learned my lesson with .co and .xxx………..
BullS says
Domenclature.com—very poor analogy.
How about this….stop BullShit the Bullshitters!!

What the hell is People Browser. No one knows about it or cares. When it comes to social, average Joe knows FB, Twitter, Google+ etc. Who do these people think they are. Oh that’s right used car and snake oil sales men hoping to get rich quick and pissed off that they missed out on 1995. .CEO, dumb. If I’m not a CEO, can I still reg a .CEO? Dumb dumb dumb.
I love what Mark Cuban says ‘….when everyone is looking over there, look over here..’ The future is not in gtlds, its technology and how technology can enhance everyday life things. No one gives a rip about new extensions, they care about new phones, the new gaming systems, fitness trackers, music, tv, food, movies, fashion, cars, etc etc. Things that matter. The new gtld aren’t relevant and will never be.
Dietmar Stefitz says
I think if you can add some additional applications from the Registry/registar side, new GTLD’s can be very useful. For example a verification check at MrDomain.ceo, restricted mail service which can avoid Spam, but still allows to contact the CEO, etc. The same applies for other extensions. I think Developers and the Domain Industry have to work together.
