How Your Premium Domain Might Be Sold By Godaddy As People Try To Preregistrations A New gTLD

November 8, 2013 by Michael Berkens

With Godaddy taking paid preregistrations on four new gTLD’s today, .Luxury, .Build, .Menu and .Uno, your chances of selling your premium domain name may increase if its listed in Godaddy resale channel.

As people search to preregister a new gTLD domain,  if that domain isn’t available because its  already preregistered or reserved by the registry (Godaddy doesn’t distinguish) they are showing alternative domain names and all of the alternatives as of now, are either unregistered .org .net .xxx .com and .co domains or premium domains that are for sale.

Here is what I got when I tried to preregister purses.luxury:

As you can see (you can click on the above to enlarge), the search results for purses.luxury come back to say  the domain name is taken, (probably reserved by the registry) the alternative domains suggested an alternatives are not other new gTLD’s or versions of .Luxury, which is what I would have expected to see, but instead available .org, .net and even a .xxx domain along with two premium owned domains in this case a .com and .net domain.

The premium .com and .net domain suggested as alternatives to purses.luxury are premium owned domains, PurelyPurses.com which says $3,688 First year price, Renewal price $14.99 and LeatherPurses.net for $767.oo First year Price with a Renewal price of $16.99

The price of $3,688 for the .com doesn’t seem so high when a .luxury pre-registration is priced at $1,199 on a priory basis and $799 on a regular basis which are both more than the premium owned .net domain.

The premium priced domains are not showing as an aftermarket domain but just as another domain with a different price which might also help sales of premium domains.

So if you have your premium domains listed at Godaddy your chances for selling your domain may go up as people start looking to preregister a new gTLD

Putting purses.xxx first on that list makes all the other domains sound dirty, too!

Here we go, boys and girls.

What is the explanation for the variation in renewal fees on the so-called, Premium, domains:

    PurelyPurses.com $14.99
    LeatherPurses.net $16.99

vs. $9.99 on a newly-registered dot com, and $8.99 for dot net?

“Premium Domain Names are more valuable than other domains because they are based on common words or phrases people often use in their online searches.

While GoDaddy does not own these domains names, we are one of a select group of registrars that can introduce you to the sellers.

For more information on this domain, call
    (480) 366-3343”

The above is the explanation popup on the rollover of the GD results.

Go ahead, try and duplicate the search for purses.luxury, and mouse over the “?” question mark.

It doesn’t raise flags with any readers except me, because it’s not 3 figures or higher.

A frog will jump out of water that is boiling on a stove, but if you put the frog in, and heat the water slowly, it is not aware of the rise in temp.

Likewise, as the renewal fees become tiered, when they in the low four figures, people won’t say anything.

Now it the time to speak up!

    Godaddy’s motto: “It’s go time.”

On a regular search of, “luxury purses,” one result is:

    CostaLuxury.com

$4,288.00 First year price Renewal price $14.99

    because, as the explanation states,

Premium Domain Names are more valuable than other domains because they are based on common words or phrases people often use in their online searches.

While GoDaddy does not own these domains names, we are one of a select group of registrars that can introduce you to the sellers.

    Way to go, Godaddy!

@ MHB, would you phone godaddy and get an explanation? This is worth a standalone post – look forward to it!

Sorry for mistake on the previous comment:

“when they in the low four figures, people won’t say anything.”

    I meant,

“when they in the low two figures, people won’t say anything.”

@ MHB, would you please research this, and write an article? Thanx! 🙂

Had a Godaddy Premium Listings sale on a Friday night – can’t recall the last time that happened (Monday to Wednesday is more common for such sales)
