We see press releases every week from companies looking for business in the domain branding business but saw a PR today that stood out from the crowd for a company called Telefonkatalogen.biz.
The PR cites a “recent article from Ping! Magazine, that said “it is imperative for businesses to select the very best online domains–and the Web marketing professionals at Telefonkatalogen.biz agree.” (unfortunately the PR does not give a citation to the article)
“The Ping article notes that launching a successful brick-and-mortar store begins with establishing a solid physical address–and in much the same way, online marketing or e-commerce success starts when businesses select reliable online domains. ”
“Ping! Magazine explains just how important it is for companies to put some thought and some strategy into their online domain selection. “Without a domain name, no one will be able to find and view a website easily; therefore, directly entering domain names is the fastest and most convenient way for people to discover a business,” the article contends. “In fact, consumers often rely on this technique before searching for the business via search engines.””
“Telefonkatalogen.biz is the leading marketing company in Norway”
“We also see the reality of the customer’s domain name playing a key role for generating traffic, as search engines in many cases will give a relevant domain name a higher ranking, simply because it better matches the search inquiry.”
“We always, when possible, advise our customers to choose domain names that are relevant to their type of business or their company name in order to be more easily accessible for their customers. :
“And when the specialized domains appear we will consider advising our clients to consider a change of domain name in such cases where we find that the customer’s domain name is less relevant or, for example, too long.”
Telefonkatalogen.biz offers further advice.
The PR quotes the The Ping article which offers some specific strategies for those seeking to devise the best domain names possible.
“One piece of advice is to keep it brief; as the article notes, a domain name that is longer than 20 characters makes it more likely that the user will mistype it, or omit a character by accident.”
Well Telefonkatalogen.biz just barely makes its own self imposed cut at 19 letters including the extension which is a .biz
The term Telefonkatalogen translates to “phone directory” from Norwegian but phonedirectory.biz is about as far away as you can get from a short brandable domain for a company in the naming business.
So while we agree with the quotes taken from Ping! Magainze this company didn’t seem to follow Ping! advice when choosing its own domain name
Is this the worst name for a company in the domain branding business?

“Mdhuset AS (Telefonkatalogen.biz) is one of the leading players in the industry and was created in 2004 with the aim to help customers with the best visibility on the internet. The company got new owners in 2012 and has since focused on quality in relation to the products supplied . . “- bio It says, Key Systems in the Whosis, so maybe it is Key Systems which bought Telefonkatalogen.biz in 2012.
Live Advertising says
The bio says Telefonkatalogen.biz helps businesses get online since 2004, and was bought in 2012. The whosis lists Key Systems, so it must be Key Systems which bought Telefonkatalogen.biz. Because the requirement of presence in Canada, n49.ca run by Rick Silver wouldn’t be a target, because it’s the same sort of business.

.biz is good when the TLD is part of the name

The website doesn’t even show any real data. I ran some searches and it didn’t return a single hit. This could be one of the scams where sellers call companies to sell directory listings for insane prices. They promise them all kinds of traffic and great “free” advertising, but it doesn’t really change anything.
Could also be a ripoff of Telefonkatalogen.no, which forwards to Gulesider.no. GuleSider.no btw is the “official” yellow pages directory in Norway.
