Yesterday we published a blog post about Pinky Brand’s prediction for how many domain names will be in existence by the end of 2016
Pinky’s prediction was 408.5 Million domain names in the zone files by the end of 2016 including 73.6 million from new gTLD’s
Current there are 252 million domain names in existence including all the TLD’s and ccTLD’s but obviously the new gTLD’s are yet to launch.
So the question we have for today is how many domain names will be in existence by the end of 2016?
You can make you selection on the poll on the right and for bragging rights place your prediction in the comment section as well.
Danny Pryor says
I don’t think it will quite make 400-million, primarily because I’m not convinced not enough of the new gTLDs will be ready in time. It will depend on which gTLDs are ready and whether registrations in existing gTLDs picks up as a consequence. I certainly see Pinky’s number being more than possible, but I opted for a more conservative number, in that incredibly broad range of 300-million to 400-million. 😉
Samit says
354 million, give or take.
I don’t see why new gtlds would accelerate the growth of domains in the root.
Growth rate for registered domains is currently around 12% per year from what I’ve seen.

I would estimate between 300 to 400 million. Although new registrations may maintain the current growth levels, there will be lot of drops as well and no takers on the drop, as the SEO and parking sectors crumble further.
Also, keep in view the machinations of certain big brothers to dismantle (or make irrelevant) the domain name system itself.
Just yesterday, I was talking to a decently-enough published writer and asked him for his domain name. He didn’t have one, but had a sub-domain somewhere and to launch it, he typed his own name in the address bar, which brought up some search results and he clicked one of them. And, I dare-say, majority of internet consumers are like that.

My prediction = COM
c = 3 , o=15 , m=13
315,130,000
If my calculations are correct, just over 315 million

Hello MHB,
Our prediction is that there will be excessive amounts of Domain Names causing (Market Saturation Obsolescence) severely distorting SEO Manipulated Search Engine Marketing and will make having a clearly spelled and meaningfull name top priority.
The mere fact that major players the gTLD applicants have chosen to try out Pure Play Generic markers = gTLDs to try to market Traffic back to their .COM Profit centers tells you that they know the power of Generic pure play Marketing Tools.
The catch twenty 22 for them is they do not control the .COM Pure Play Generics ,someone else controls these powerfull devices, it could be you, if you play your cards right. Whats the difference ? their right of the dot is not what consumers will trust to transact on? Is the picture getting clearer here?

Seems like Mike has lent his blog to the writers at snl to crowd source new characters and scripts
Maksim says
Probably near 400 million, just my guess.

Unfortunately, Jeff does not seem to realize that he has actually turned into a caricature of himself…
worldstarjobs was doing a fairly good impression of him – not that I enjoyed reading more .com foundation gobbledygook.

314,159,265 – give or take a few mill, a nice round number.
I wonder what an “excessive” amount of domains is exactly?
LM says
Oh for a second answer can I say approaching infinity?
The new gtld operators could do that thing like verisign did a few years ago with .com till they got shutdown and make every possible domain resolve.
There wont just be hotels.london but tkurhgvuwk7824tywgh.maybelline !
Jeff – seek help.

Hello MHB,
Although there is a finite number of Mothers out there, there are Mothers that stand out, for each and everyone of us.
Happy Mothers Day Lois.
You gave me everything I’ve got and I am gratefull to you.
Oscar Acosta says
My guess is 328 million.

Michael Marcovici says
More relevant might to check how much money in total is spent for domain registrations/year, free zones might add large amounts of domains but to keep the industry moving forward real dollars will be needed.
Jeff Schneider says
Hello MHB,
With the addition of all these confusing and anything but simple extensions the overall effect of this phenomonon will further fracture any logical traceable path to your Online Business. Its absolutely key there be a simple understandable way to access your Online Business.
This massive confusion will lead consumers to simple Pure Play Generic (.COM Profit Centers) in droves. If you think this is SNL you have no clue what Marketing Analytics are all about.

Believe me Jeff having run Marketing for Fortune 500 corporations and served them as head of my own agency I well know what Marketing “analytics” are — at least well enough to know I haven’t seen any presentation of them here. Just your self-blogulating poop and made up numbers that are meaningless without fact-based support.
Jeff Schneider says
Well Owen now that you are pulling out the credentials card let me present you with mine and my groups Marketing pedigree.
The Contact Group is an assemblage of colleagues I have met in my 40 + = years experince in Marketing Analysis which began with Rockefeller I.B.E.C. group where I was head Marketing Analyst Int’lMarkets. The Contact group (Mastermind Group) combined has over 100 years experience.
This gobbldygook about numbers that are not available as of yet is sophomoric on your part, as you may not know that this is the Conceptual phase of a brand new Online Marketing Phase.
I am afraid if you are not grasping what I am saying above you may want to get a Cliffs notes unabridged edition, to glean a portion of our combined experience in Nascent Developing Markets.
