MediaPost published a story today with the headline; “Top-Level Domain Names Will Change Search”
“Search engine optimization (SEO) will change dramatically within the next few years as a result of the Internet transitioning from 23 top-level domain names (TLD) to more than 1,409 strings. ”
The story quotes Jennifer Wolfe, president of Wolfe Domain as saying:
“TLDs will become ZIP codes or category regulators. ”
“Search engines will begin to weigh the TLD name as a category, and .com will become diluted in search results — less valuable
“I can see a huge impact for search terms in the domains for something like Century21.com vs. Century21.realestate,” said Bill Connard, vice president of local search at RIO SEO. “I see it as a channel for DYI networks.”
“The TLD name will likely weigh more heavily in Google and Bing search algorithms, and search engine marketers focusing on optimization will need to pay more attention. “From my conversations with Google, Microsoft and Amazon, people are thinking there’s a three- to-five-year window before seeing wide adoption,” Wolfe said, emphasizing that agencies, brands and search experts need to start thinking about it now.”

keep pushin’ that .rubbish. ya made a bad investment… you’ve made more good ones… live with it.

Right… Of course this greatly depends on who ends up with all of the GTLD’s. If Google ends up controlling all 101 of the strings they applied for, I don’t think Bing or Yahoo are going to rush out to support this new shift they’re proposing. The only reason marketers and agencies might support this idea (or SEO firms for that matter) is that they’re frustrated that there’s an after market and that some domains are quite expensive. It’s a self serving statement and one that is not based on anything factual.
I’ve got no idea how so many people seem to think that .Com is going to go away. In 30 years, maybe, but the boomer generation is not going to adopt these new strings. Educating people on the thousands of new strings will be the equivalent of having someone shopping for a new car walk through a car lot and have 1,000 new auto manufacturers all try to get their attention at the same time.
For the last three months I’ve been running a little experiment. About 25% of the time I’m on the phone with someone and I have to give them a web url or an email address, when it comes times for me to give them the domain extension, I pause and then wait.
If more than two seconds go by, I’ll just say it.
But you want to know what happens most of the time, they just finish the sentence and say .Com.
Ad agencies are loving the new GTLD’s for two reasons.
1. They don’t want to spend serious money on a domain, because it’s too easy to measure its effectiveness. These new GTLD domains will be much less expensive.
2. Using these new (and no doubt confusing to consumers) GTLD domains will make agencies and the necessity of relying on their “wisdom” and guidance all the more necessary.
Right out of college I went into the advertising industry at an agency. I went from entry level copy writer to Creative Director in less than five years. By year seven I had had enough, I much prefer the digital ad space to shooting commercials for big companies.
The MediaPost article is nothing more than wishful thinking of behalf of the advertising industry.

I still believe that .COM is not going anywhere and will remain the number 1 extension for many years if not forever.
Even when .APPLE is approved, Apple will not make it their main address. No company will ever switch from COMPANY.COM to .COMPANY.
Jeff Schneider says
Hello MHB,
This scare tactic journalim will fool some companies but its overall results will pour more SEO Manipulated data into the already obsolesced Search Engine Marketing Model.
Consumers will not adopt gTLDS and the overall effect of these Massive Dumps of SEO manipulation will render Search Engine Marketing useless, in locating businesses in cyberspace. Reasons to follow :
Full Optimal Internet Expansion can never be achieved through SEO Manipulated Search Engine Marketing.More and more web businesses will be stranded and isolated in cyberspace, never to be found because of the Search Engines Foundationally and Fundamentally Flawed Achilles Heal, called (Market Saturation Obsolescence)
The SEO Manipulated Search Platform by its very design is the big problem. Any Business Locator system that has to be manipulated to find your business is not a direct and honest solution.
Google knows what ( Market Saturation Obsolescence) means, by being victim to it. Why do you think they are going to type-ins themselves. Get ready to hear about this very crippling subject, more and more over the years to come.
(Market Saturation Obsolescense) is caused by the massive amount of illegitimate SEO manipulated data that is dumped into the Search Engine Experience. It literally bastardizes information supplied to people searching for your business through a Search Engine. End-Users who trust being found In cyberspace through the Search Engine Centric Marketing Model, suffer the consequnences.
What many business owners are not told by their SEO manipulator friends, is this key boondoggle of SEO Manipulated Marketing , and it is this !
Your businesses most dreaded competitors are often on the same Search Engine page as your companies are and are just one Click away from you as a choice.
Now come on now, do you think this is Smart Marketing?
It may be smart for SEO manipulators ! But a very stupid choice for the business owner, We think.
This phenomonon can be TOTALLY, avoided by using Pure Play Direct Navigation .COM Generics,ONLY.
Seriously, the Smart Marketers are not swallowing the SEO Manipulated Search Engine Kool-Aid here.
For all these reasons, we are especially concerned with the whole foundational Dysfunction of ALL Search engines inability to efficiently locate Businesses legitimately. SEO Manipulators are just a part of this highly inefficient system employed by Search engines in locating businesses with their totally dysfunctional and by the way obsolesced Marketing Function. The SMART money will be going around them more and more.Count on it !

2% of these gTLD’s will be a first hit wonder, 5% will hussle their butts off to make it past the first five years, the remainder will be no more.

My brother is a therapist, my father is a lawyer. I asked them hey pa out of .com, .net, .org or .lawyer which one would you pick. He said .org and .lawyer
I then ask my bro out of .com, .net .org or .therapist which one would you go with he didn’t know about .therapist He said he’d pick .therapist in a sec. Making it JohnDoe.Therapist
He said it will then make things easier. Instead of searching for a name in .com as NewYorkCognitiveBehavioralTheapistNow.com you can easily pick your name to the .Therapist.
I agree I am young still in high school but honestly I could care less if a site is not .com. .net I really don’t care about it sounds like losers get that. .org is like you’re really serious and sh** but i like .orgs more than .nets If I ever wanna scare people I just use a .org. there you have it.

Oh my gosh. Come on, seriously? Little kids don’t surf the Internet on iPads, let alone the iPhone. They’re too busy playing with the latest 99 cent app that mom or dad bought them.
Mobile devices and apps will change the Internet far more than any of these new gTLDs. Apple KNOWS this, which is why they only registered one gTLD. So if Apple doesn’t care, WHY SHOULD LITTLE KIDS?
