It was a pretty busy week for us at TheDomains.com.
Our stories on the registration of domain names here and here, was picked up by news outlets all around the world and was the basis for a bulletin put out by the Department of Homeland Security.
The bulletin was issued one day after our initial posts on domain registrations involving the tragic events in Boston by The National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center a division of Homeland Security and alerted the public to Twitter handles and domain names:
“”Individuals wasted no time registering domain names related to yesterday’ explosions at the Boston Marathon.
Some of the domains are likely to take advantage of those interested in learning more details about the explosions. Others will likely target individuals looking to contribute to fundraising efforts. It is unclear what each registrants intent may be, but historically scammers, spammers and other malicious actors capitalize on major news events by registering such domains.””
The bulletin then used the list of 125 domain name we prepared and credited TheDomains.com with the preparation of the list.

I wonder if the United States Department of Commerce and the Better Business Bureau will be issuing a similar statement asking consumers to be aware aware of Internet Domain Registries and Registrars selling you useless garbage driven by your emotions.
NewgTLDsite says
It will be nice when New gTLDs arrive, like .Charity or .Give which will be more supervised spaces with stricter registration, whois, and use requirements so that consumers will know they can trust them better.
Anybody can be a .com, including the bad guys.

Or at least, defend the suspect’s legal rights. Meantime, time will tell how things go.
Good job on the lists, MHB. Might mean more exposure for your blog and so. 🙂

Congrats! Excellent research – I don’t know how you did it! Without passing judgement pro or con the names, I thought it made great news. It was newsworthy. Keep the insights coming!

I get so confused – but apparent interrogation without legal representation is OK – if it affects public safety – I mean this is like waterboarding – and with the EXACT same groups of terrorists apparently – but that was not OK and got a guy that has never worked in the private sector elected.
I am just trying to get a good grip on the horseshit coming out of Washington 🙂
Jeff Schneider says
Hello MHB,
After all the temporary news Flash bites dissapear, what are we all left with?
Probably a world of mistrust. What on the internet do people still trust?
They know trustworthy .COM companies they have trusted in the past, Their banks end in .COM, eBay.com Yahoo.com, Google.com, IBM.com , USPS.com .
Along comes .Whatever.coms, wait does this raises a flag? Do you really think Michael they will trust this new stray cat at the door?

He’ll either be considered and “enemy combatant” or he will mysteriously die in custody.
Jeff Schneider says
Hello MHB,
Those in severe denial of whats really trusted online, and not their minds fabrications, will realize consumers have more trust of .COM sites, the revenue #s prove it.
ontheinterweb, you will find your fabrications highly injurious to End-Users, your carma will catch up Sir.

One on air NBC news broadcast mentioned TheDomains as well.,

My understanding is that water boarding is now longer OK, Obama ended the practice.
Now they just ask nicely, of course the talked to the older brother back in 2011 and let him go on with his life
Jay Lohmann says
Whoever bought up Boston Domains to profit from should be publically shamed, drawn and quartered.
However, as to the Texas explosion domains, SOME of those registrations MAY be legitimate because there may be legal culpability on the part of the plant owners.
The morning after the explosion, our agency fielded several calls the from law firms wanting help with regs, web dev, seo and digital marketing to funnel the injured victim to them.
TexasPlantExplosion.com is one example. (we did not put up this site)
Right or wrong, that kind of marketing leaves a very icky residue on my morality, we respectfully declined ALL requests, but that doesnt mean they are COMPLETELY immoral like the Boston regs.
Michael Berkens says
Jay
With the Texas explosion there were a lot of domain name registered by attorney’s trying to reach out to the victims which we think is fair use, so we think its important to look at the domains registered rather than just the number of domains with say the word “boston” in it.
Even in the case of “boston” domain a lot of positive domains were registered days after bombing, those who are just looking at number of registrations rather than the actual domain names is doing barking up the wrong tree.
unknowndomainer says
So you compile a list that is published without any checking of whether the domains are legitimate or not. Just copied verbatim and this is a victory?
When a lawyer sends a list to registrars in the “in stealth mode” case you rambled on about breach of your rights and the totally disregard for your rights?
Say whaaa?
Enemy combatant and US Citizen are mutually exclusive.
The miranda rights are more court procedure than anything. Not having his rights read to him will actually render what he says mostly inadmissible (or can be argues as tainted evidence) in court. it’s usually a risk on the prosecution – they would only do that if there was imminent danger and/or the case was air tight.
