We haven’t done a quick poll in a while and thought we would see how many of you were playing in the new .PW space.
We have none gone through Sunrise, Landrush and now General Availability earlier today.
The question is if you registered any .Pw domains through either Sunrise, Landrush or GA how many did you register?
If you didn’t register any then you can choose that answer
According to the .PW registry it registered over 4,000 domain names in the first 1/2 hour.
The Voting poll is on the right.
If you want any bragging right feel free to put your pickups in the comments below.
Seems prices for .PW registrations are as low as $5 a year.
Steve Jones says
Zilch. I’ve had no shortage of obscure ccTLD investment in my past but .pw is really a stretch to have any sort of relevance. Minus single character and maybe 2 character domains and a handful of keywords, names in extensions like this simply aren’t worth speculating on.
Suheil Gazlan Pallie says
I registered pvt.pw three level domain name from mydot.pw it cost only 1$

I just did after reading PW…
pathetic Weirdos

It is an obscure extension and a forced acronym.

.PW looks like the ugly stepsister of .PRO and .PRO is a useless TLD itself. Go figure.
AbdulBasit.com says
Zero. Will never register a single .pw domain. Crappy ccTLD.
robsequin says
One.
Could not resist.
I read this post, went to Encirca and regged Havana.pw for two years for $22.
Maybe I can flip it for $25?
Joe says
@robsequin
Why on Earth did you reg it for 2 years when 1 year costs just $5?!
robsequin says
If nothing happens with it in two years, I’ll drop it.
Gives plenty of time for new domain extensions to come out. Who knows maybe people won’t care about dot whatever.
BullS says
Domain psycho depression when you get older.

should we expect the same scenario for the large majority of the new gTLD’s ?
I say: YES!

This is embarrassing. Someone should be ashamed of themselves. .PW domain buyers, I am currently in the process of packaging my turds for sale, any takers?
facts_pro says
That was my thought too 3D, but crazier things have happened.
Grim says
None for me, thanks.
There’s a bit of a collector/hoarder mentality for some when it comes to domain names, I think. And .PW is new, which makes it kind of exciting. But why not just register a .CO, .CC or .TV? There are plenty of other extensions out there to buy, might as well collect them all…
accent says
PW actually has been available for years. Here is part of what I posted in 2007 on my website TLDV(dot)com:
PW = Palau
Location: Western Pacific Ocean, southeast of the Philippines.
Domain Name availability: Third level names available to anyone. It is possible to become a registrar of a unique second level name and then create an unlimited number of third level domain names.
Second level extensions: unlimited – each registrar can create their own SLD.
Notes: The PW extension is mainly geared towards e-mail, but websites can also be built there.
“PW is the Internet’s first and only domain extension devoted to “Communities of Shared Interests”. Unlike other domain extensions, PW is aimed at providing individuals and consumer/affinity organizations a highly-personalized, permanent and portable e-mail address and a managed platform for community and social networking.” … “PW Registry is actively seeking potential resellers”. (quotes from pwregistry(dot)pw/aboutpw(dot)php in 2007)
So not all taken PW domains have been registered recently.

So, I had some funds at a registrar that I couldn’t get refunded, and said: “what the hey”.
I went for two, got one and it’s already a live site: RPG.pw
Go play!
This must be the ugliest tld thus far.

My opinions:
.pw (and other re-purposed ccTLDs) & the new flood of gTLDs are no more appealing than .BIZ, .TRAVEL, .ASIA, .WS, etc.
How many people have seen any of those extensions on the shrinking 1st page of Google? IF you did see one in the SERPs next to a .com or .org, which would garner more credibility and ‘clicks’?
The SERPs don’t have enough space for the pending flood of gTLDs, and even if they did .com & .org have the public trust over oddball domains like pepperoni.PIZZA or Diapers.BABY.
Click-through rates affect organic position, and consumer credibility ‘clicks’ should favor .com & .org. With only 10 organic slots (or less), I predict the new flood of gTLDs will fall to ‘no man’s land’.
ccTLDs have an edge for local markets, but .com & .org allow for global expansion. If a product has limited chance of global distribution and need for international brand presence, then (some) ccTLDs might work well. However, for brand recognition, status and power in globalizing industries I strongly favor .com & .org.

Also, many mobile phones have a “shortcut” button for .COM.
Lazy text-monkeys can’t even type the four letters in “your” (UR), so I doubt they will take the time to type-in the new obscure gTLDs.
Mobile web screen size, lazy typing, and “.com” buttons will hamper gTLDs from type-in traffic even if they did spend enough advertising money to promote awareness.

I was going to buy some .pw domains today, but instead decided to take advantage of one of those star naming service offers. My certificate should be coming soon. Anyone else here tried those out?

Facts_pro, don’t mean to call you out, if you have money to flush, so be it. But, on NP you said you picked up some “premiums.” WTF is a premium .pw. That’s like saying hey look this turd is a little more well formed than the others I dropped over there and doesn’t smell quite as bad.
And, again, don’t take it personally, I just think this extension is a joke. No one outside this closed group of mental domainers has any notion of what these random letters mean.
facts_pro says
Thanks 3D..not a big deal and your points are valid. I’m looking at keywords as I feel that is more relevant than the extension at this point.
Overall, my roots are in .pro which I think most people on namepros agree is a better extension.
You can call me crazy on .pw but I’d rather have a few especially in keywords that I am looking to develop than not have it. For me it is worth the very small investment to hold for a year and then re-evaluate based on where the I feel the extension is heading.

One convenient thing about the .pw domain [and those like it]
I can block the entire tld and dramatically reduce my customer’s spam since there is no and never will be any legitimate traffic originating nor being hosted there.
Ron Sandifor says
I am relatively new at this but here is my opinion. The future of pw depends on how good of a job is done at branding it as “professional web”. Personally, I think that professional web is a great tld. Dot com is all used up and professional people or business owners should be attracted to pw as representative of their status.
Phil Harris says
Just curious? If anyone purchased any of the .pw domains on NameJet?
I did buy 2
