I got this email a few days ago from Register.com/NetworkSolutions
Its certainly by no means the first of these type of emails I get from registrars.com trying to get you to register domains, typically something close to another domain I have registered.
I have no idea how they pull their data, as we have very few domains with either and all caught on the drop, however lets just say that Register.com/NetworkSolutions.com and I have quite a different definition of a premium domain.
I don’t know what domain I even have that would make Register.com think I would want to register this premium domain they suggested for me:
PacificHighlandsPulishing.com, yet typo and all.
We don’t own PacificHighlandsPublishing.com (the correct version) but I’m not sure the owner of that domain which goes to billcloke.typepad.com would be less than thrilled to know its own registrar is suggesting to other customers that they register a typo version of his domain.
Anyway in this case Mr. Cloke has nothing to worry about with me but I think these registrars have some explaining to do

they should begin by explaining how they retain expired domains without releasing them to the public and by this way building a valuable portfolio with almost no risk at all when the rules say that they can renew them only in “extenuating circumstances”.

Look’s like a form of Contributory Infringement to me; along with that, as you mention, their propositioning you to Cybersquate the domain name of another persons business.
I’m sure their bespoke legal counsel at Steptoe & Johnson LLP can explain!
As you have influence in the Domain Name Business, why don’t you ask?
Cheers, Graham.

i worked at register.com for many years.. i left 6 years ago..
glad to see they still are as inept as ever..
why do they get away with keeping domains with traffic from the drop? because no one has done anything about it. ICANN obviously doesn’t care. Someone would have to sue them to stop this practice. They know they aren’t allowed to do this but they do not care – i should know i was in charge of the portfolio of expired names. I had to leave due to the culture of stupidity and blatant lack of ethics on behalf of senior management. They were more concerned with how to evade taxes and setup madiera tax shelters than actually fix broken products or offer products of value.

Hi Joeblog:
Quoting Winston Churchill: “Once in a while you will stumble upon the truth but most of us manage to pick ourselves up and hurry along as if nothing had happened.”
Perhaps it’s time for you to lead the way.
Cheers, Graham.
