In its announcement splitting Marchex into two separate companies and releasing over 500 domain name sales previously not reported, we reached out to Ron Jackson of DnJournal.com who has served as the “official” record keeper of domain sales to see how he would be handling these sales.
In all we count over $24 million dollars in domain sales which took place between 2008-2012 by Marchex.
In answer to our question of whether and how Ron Jackson would be reporting these sales of Marchex on DnJournal, he stated:
“”These sales took place over a four year period and the dates were not revealed, so I can’t place them on the appropriate Top 100 charts for when the may have occurred.
So, instead I will put a permanent link to their list in the Domain Sales Archive: http://www.dnjournal.com/archive/domainsales-archive.htm under the links to the annual charts, with an explanation that they released that group of sales in late 2012 with sales made in the 2008-2012 period.
Kind of like the asterisk on Roger Maris’s old home run record :-)”
We support that approach and think its the only way of fairly accounting for the domain names sold during this period by Marchex.
It also continues to support the argument that only a fraction of all domain sales are ever reported.

It would be interesting to see how many are being used and how many are parked.
From my experience as a seller and broker, MOST buyers do nothing with their domains. So, since I would expect most of these sales to be to end users, I would be curious to see how many/what percentage are developed.

There’s a couple in there that you wouldn’t think would turn into a seriously profitable business without a really significant investment even beyond the domain. I know the guy who bought RegisteredAgents.com and he’s doing really, really well with that site.
The prices they’ve been getting for domains such as these may indicate that large companies prefer to purchase domains from other large companies. I am hoping that Archeo will offer domain brokerage services (however I think they could have chosen a better name).

Yes could have chosen a better name than Archeo.com – but maybe they all use Spokeo.com – damn and looking thru my stuff I have Roneo.com.

242.com, 252.com, 880.com, 8808.com, 444.com, etc reported a while back and stored on namebio.com database…
also, prices don’t match. maybe some sales reported in EUR and others in USD…
this list is smelling fishier every time i take a look at it.

Maybe the buyer listed the sale or maybe they were resold after the Marchex sale
Remember those sales could be 4 years old.
Also remember that Marchex is a public company and for them to issue false info is a huge deal with lots of legal ramifications
Michael, the examples I listed were not resold. same buyer all the time AFAIK.
another user here that was also a buyer refer the price he bought the domain was not what was reported – but close.
being a public company doesn’t mean much. we have had several examples in the last 20 years of wrong doings from people and companies who were supposed to be transparent and audit by third parties.
