Let me point out why the temporary dips, mostly extended vacations of executives, and confusion in the economy and to a lesser degree with ALT TLDs. All this will shake out soon and you will see a rise in the prices of the best .Com’s and more sales. I cant speak for lesser quality names, Im short there.
Michael H. Berkens says
Mike
This isn’t the dog days of summer which is August.
I think as I have said that the desperation of the domainer community is apparent now and those domainer like you and I that appreciate the true value of domains are getting overtaken by the desperate sellers at BIN.
I get rejections of offers everyday based on a “similar” domain being available for under $3,500.
Guess we will see but 44% of all Sedo sales at BIN is a pretty eye awaking number
Todd says
Yeah looks like only one Pending Delete flip in immunooncology.com which was released at the end of March.
Dean says
Domainers dictate the price of their domains and by proxy the market. Anyone selling low is doing a disservice to themselves, to the market and fellow domainer(s).

Would you sell a one-word dot com for $2,000? Cafeterias.com for $2,000. I don’t understand . . .
Are you going to advise your clients to reserve dot com of the best keywords of whatever extensions they register? In these two lists, I notice lots of extension dot coms:
massagetv.com
erotv.com
jumpco.com
geteco.com
For instance,
bookweb.com
salesweb.com
for the .web extension, etc.

you been in the game a long time, lets look at reality of things.
its summer time
tough economic conditions
what right does anyone have to tell me im under selling or my own portfolio?
what works for you, may not work for most of us
its all noise mike. just like how this gtld issues is going cause mass confusion and consumer will keep on typing in .com domains
just ponder this for a few minutes and when you first started out. not now. not when your this big portfolio owner.
kinda disagree on things. also without cheap prices by domainers, how would this impact your portfolio over the years?
fun times in domains. no offense mike but kinda disagree on why your upset why people could be selling things cheaper then you. again catch 22. i want your sales prices lol.
Beach says
Why pay $100,000+ for a premium .com when you will soon be able to grab a gTLD with the same keyword for $500?
Right-Of-The-Dot, for better or worse, will kill the premium .com market. You big portfolio owners should sell now while you still can…you are now sitting on slowly depreciating assets if you are holding high-end .com’s.
beach.com says
newbie alert.

Tom says
You morons the people buying these names are clueless about gtlds, most will not fit what they are doing, you are looking at years of integration before the public gets it, maybe for fresh startups, ok, but for direct ecommerce sites, they still need their .com backups.
Lots going on Olympics, slow summer season, you people panic to quick.
You want to blame someone go to talk to Andrew Reyberry over at hugedomains he has brought the drop catch, low fixed price model into play, shut him down, and you will get your pricing back.

DirtyBoxing.com is a funny one.
I’ve been a long time mixed martial arts fan a year ago, decided to start training. Love beating people up and getting hit, best sport ever.
“Dirty Boxing” is a relevant and very potent MMA technique used by the likes of Randy Couture, etc. I could totally see someone like him buying that domain name, putting out a 120 minute DVD and making a metric fuckload of money off it. It’s a DVD I would absolutely buy if the right person did it.
Sometimes, it’s the esoteric names that a “domainer” wouldn’t have a clue about that are used to sell a proprietary, niche product and earn someone a ton of money.
L says
Would you sell a one-word dot com for $2,000? Cafeterias.com for $2,000. I don’t understand . . .
—————–
You pretty much don’t understand everything- not just this- but for clarity purposes, yes. That was probably a ‘bit low’ relative to the eternal opportunities that might lay just around the corner (IN THE FUTURE!), but maybe someone was just sick and tired of waiting, and seriously… What are you going to do with a name like Cafeterias.com?
Domainers see a name like that and justify it with a typical “it could be a directory” domainer-development-delusion (thus reinforcing the great quote “In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s mind there are few”)
The highest and best use I can think of off the top of my head would be some sort of food services company that works with cafeterias, it would be a fine marketing peripheral for them but in the land of government contracts, “marketing” doesn’t take the same shape. Your web address could be cafeteria-service-co.info, it wouldn’t matter.
Maybe the reason they sold it for $2K is because they prefer cash over dreams.

@ Mikey
Mike B said: “I think as I have said that the desperation of the domainer community is apparent now and those domainer like you and I that appreciate the true value of domains are getting overtaken by the desperate sellers at BIN.”
Well, if people are cancelling & going elsewhere, it means that the domain of yours that was potentially considered by the buyer was not “special” enough (to justify the far higher price) – in which case they went with the far cheaper alternative elsewhere, if the above Afternic list & Sedo’s list is any indication.
Capitalism at its simplest
C’mon, 90% of the bulk volume “spray & pray” domainers like Schilling, Mann, Berkens, Dotcomagency, Bhanots is filled with crap, fluff & filler, that is neither great or special. Just mediocre, at best
Just Ok for which there are plenty nice substitutes that are far cheaper (even hand reg)
Why should they spend 5 figs with you?
When in all likelihood there is a nice SUBSTITUTE for $1000-$2500 from Buydomains or HugeDomains (Reberry) or other domainers??
So you’ve got deflationary effects
The other thing: Every year going forward, the OVERALL QUALITY of available pool of domains in the wild gets poorer & poorer.
By now, most end users know they have to SETTLE FOR & END UP WITH some 5th choice name.
That’s why they don’t want to pay up – when there are tons of CHEAPER good alternatives
Of course, the end user will be justifiably pissed when he inquires about one of Bhanots or Mugfords mediocre .COM/NET/BIZ/ORG & gets a 5 figure reply…
LOL
Grim says
Aggro, I feel sorry for people who live in tiny, overpriced, 1-bedroom apartments….
But back to the original subject, there are dips and slow periods in every industry. Best just to wait it out.
As far as the gTLDs… as soon as the hysteria of that insanity dies down, and everyone begins to see that they’re no better than a .BIZ or .NET you can register NOW, things will get back to normal.
.PRO, .SHOP…. pfffft.

If it starts “xn--” then it’s an IDN.
It’s not a great idea for domain auctioneers to be
quoting the puny-code in this way, as it’s not relevant
to ANYTHING.
The only thing that matters is what it resolves as…
Mike Mann says
Most of the money in the secondary domain market for premium .Com comes from wealthy American executives who are somewhat homogeneous, and are very sensitive to slight changes in the economy, domain space, and they take extra vacations at the same time and spend less each summer, and/or when its real hot, the power is out, or the economy is in a transitional space. In this June/July all of them dovetailing. Again I am talking only about the majority of payers for super premium .Com’s American business executives with money buy most of them or direct their companies. When those execs have fear or take time off the market depresses temporarily. Names that are not truly premium are irrelevant and barely affect the market level due to their permanent illiquidity.
Mike Mann says
Again the advisers of execs and the stuff they read in the current press may make them pause and study more, to see if they could spend less and still brand with an ALT TLD instead of a .Com. The smart ones get over that quickly and go with the winner, premium rankable .Com’s. Makes sense that they are pausing during the BS press on new TLDs, bad economy and financing prospects, summer heat and systems failure, lethargy and the ability to make mistakes while procrastinating and trying to save. Failing to properly brand their companies and begin good ranking processes in Google and with potential stakeholders memorizing their brand.
Sean Callahan says
How does this get sold? Zjzsyz.com for $1,795.00
Adam says
I always thought that most of the money in the aftermarket was SMBs not executives. I find that insight interesting . Thanks Mike Mann
Back in the real World says
When any industry starts blaming ‘the summer’ you know the s*** is hitting the fan. There must be 1,000 retailers over the last couple of decades that have tried this and the next thing you know theyve gone tits up.
The only thing to look at is historical data, if its available, from the summers previous. If there is always a dip in Jul Aug then theres always a dip, if there is no slow down in sales historically then ‘the summer’ is just an excuse.
Louise says
@ L, Appreciate the feedback, though I believe the nostalgia for cafeterias – yes – would allow a directory to realize good ad revenue that would more than pay for the $2,000 price. Don’t get me wrong – $2,000 is nothing to sneeze at! Where do I get the confidence to make such a supposition? Look at Elliot Silver’s Dogwalker.com – doing well with listing fees.
@ MHB, considering the extension dot com domains which sold this time:
massagetv.com
erotv.com
jumpco.com
ecoco.com
it’s reasonable to ask, Are you advising clients to register the keywordgTLD dot coms of the most popular keywords for their extensions, or no?
For instance,
bookweb.com
salesweb.com
for the .web gTLD, etc.
ri.sk says
@Backintherealworld

there in the arena. A ‘slow’ period just means that there are
some good bargains to be had…

@ L, thanx for feedback on Cafeterias.com I just spent a long time composing a comment, but it disappeared!
@ MHB, considering the extension dot coms which were just registered:
massagetv dot com
erotv dot com
jumpco dot com
ecoco dot com
it is reasonable to be curious, are you going to advise Right of the Dot’s clients to register the keywordgTLD dot com of popular keywords for that extension? Such as:
bookweb dot com
salesweb dot com
for the dot web gTLD, etc.
Grim says
@Back in the real World
There are plenty of industries where different times of the year result in very different sales results.
In your second paragraph, you wrote that “The only thing to look at is historical data,” and yet you don’t seem to present any. Is it easier to provide trollish theories, than it is to actually do the work to present real evidence?
Try harder.
Back in the real World says
Grim –
What are you talking about? I didnt say that this industry is going down the pan, I was refering to retail, I said that you need to look at historically data to be able to make a judgement if it is usual or not for there to be a slow down in summer.
I leave the going through the numbers to you mate!
Grim says
@ Back in the real World
My mistake, if I misunderstood you.

Let’s go there.

I think they need an internet presence so dot…com or dot….net or org they should have but beyond that the rest of the marketing should be done on domains in that extension once they are delegated like buy.xxx or go.co

………also some sales have questionable pricing posted: names sold in batches and averaged out, or they pick and choose prices of names in a batch deal, or sold to insiders, etc.
The top brokers have been showing too high sales in past by selling lots of the best stuff for too cheap, now the sales reps and domain dealers are still under pressure to show the same numbers, so they are selling their souls and eating crap at it; count me as a buyer of underpriced assets

go.co
that they should try to register:
goco.com
alongside the main one, to control bleedoff?

Breaking news! Concert.tv is pending delete. The trademark holders of Concert.tv are likely letting it expire because of the premium renewal rate in the thousands. You can still find the website on
ConcertTV.com
I rest my case.
