According to a couple of stories out today State Governments in Australia announced that they are planning on applying for new Top Level internet Domains (gTLD’s).
The NSW and Victorian governments say they are going to apply for .sydney, .melbourne .victoria and .NSW
The state government said both it and the Victorian government viewed the .sydney, .melbourne and .victoria — and .NSW — domains as “key digital assets” to be secured for use by respective government agencies and their communities.
“NSW and Victoria consider that there are benefits to the acquisition of these TLDs.
“Those benefits include (but are not limited to) the development of a unique domain name address for local businesses and citizens; more obvious branding and easier to recall domain name addresses; possibilities for innovation in the various domain name addresses”
JS says
I don’t know for you and your readership but I personally am not a fan of long TLDs.
.victoria is stretching it, .melbourne is just too many characters in my opinion.

big cities = big business
especially thanks to the “local apps” trend
I hope that local domains’ registrations like .NYC will be allowed also for non-NYC and non-US citizens

All of this smells like .Confusion to me.
.com is looking to be more and more valuable every time I read one of these articles.

absolutely TRUE 🙂
.com domains never die 🙂

Bahama could not be more correct.
But it will not stop the ICANN “Government” and all the other new TTD registries from making a lot of dough selling Toyota parts to Honda owners – bill-of-goods

And what’s more …. if clunky, bureaucratic local governments are able to trademark and have priority over their own .GEOEXTENSION, that means it is PROBABLY NOT ENDING UP IN THE HANDS OF THOSE WHO VALUE IT MOST.
So instead of a well-funded private, totally for-profit enterprise with lots of development experience under their belt, the government gets it.
That brings down the quality/usefulness of .GEOEXTENSION around the board and it’s overall credibility. And why randomgeo.COM, powered by private individuals and deep pockets for the most part, will remain on top.
Don’t overlook these things- gTLD’s will need the network effect in their favor to work, but if too many local gov’ts get their hands on them they all become worthless.

So dumb, here in the US, we once had local governments pushed into using .statename.US, but they abandoned that opting for .gov and .com names for state agencies.
GeoTLDs are unnecessary in a world of geolocation services. I’d rather rely on that functionality to draw customers to my site than registering a domain name with my local government and placing my primary online presence there.
Fear, ignorance, and uncertainty are the motivating factors and all the new TLD proponents are preying on this.
Of course, money will be made but ICANN will not be able to actually drive people to use all their great new TLDs. Will be another epic FAIL by ICANN but a nice money maker for those who can capitalize on the fear through convincing the ignorant to buy their own TLD for defensive purposes or make them believe that the Internet public actually cares about these new TLDs. A little hint, they don’t.
Robert Cline says
The fact of the matter is that there will be
500 – 1000 new Top Level internet Domains
within a year. .com will become old school
and in a sea of long new Top Level internet Domains
.Co
is looking real attractive as a meaningful, credible, recognizable fast name.

Cline, it doesn’t matter how many TLDs are created. You could instantly put millions in the root, it doesn’t change a thing. Like what has happened with .CO no one will actually use them. All hype, no substance. Cline, time to move on, face it, .CO party’s over.
