Computerworld.com just published an article quoting Frank Schilling on the value of Cloud.com
“”Cayman Island-based Frank Schilling, widely regarded as one of the world’s most successful generic domain name investors with names such as Antarctica.com, said that cloud.com could fetch $3 million to $7 million if its new owner were to sell it.”
“Anything less would have been a very good value for the purchaser,” he wrote, in an email.
“Cloud computing is an extremely competitive and critical space for the companies operating there,” said Schilling. “All companies in this space want to be relevant in the hearts and minds of their customers. Citrix is a very well capitalized company with a learned appreciation for the values of domain names.”
Nice to see a domainer getting quoted as THE expert for domain valuations.

I wonder what would make amazon’s purchase of cloud.co worth? Or what price do does everyone think they bought that for?
What would a name like tablets.com be worth now? 5- 10 million, and what about the .co extensions with these type of generics names like storage.co, data.co clouds.co, tablets.co, etc. Do you think they are worth at least 5-10% of a .com. I do.
And if amazon purchased the cloud.co let’s say for 1 million then .co could be wroth around 10 -15 million if your using past sales.
We all know of the company that shall not be said, that probably has lost a few billion “wild guess” because they did not secure that phone name we all know about.

The thing is, its new owner, Citrix Systems, bought a brick and mortar company with established clientele and software products and services. They would not want to sell an asset that is the cherry on the pie of their $200 million purchase 🙂

Cloud.com is worth what ever the two parties agreed to.
Now Frank Schilling may price Cloud.com at $3M-$7M, and that is his interpretation.
Now granted that Cloud.com was part of a package deal that included some business and the value of the domain has to factor in there.
Out of 200-250 Million dollars the domain itself has to factor into that price. The better question is, is what was the business aspect of the deal valued at?
Just my two cents.
Cheers

@Jack – I believe that the domain name played a major role in the success of the company in terms of branding; therefore, Citrix bought an already successful venture that just so happened to own a top notch domain. It’s one of those cases where the domain cannot be removed from the deal and pricing it individually makes little sense. Hypothetically speaking, without the current cloud computing market the domain is worth up to $250k in my book.

Awesome! Frank is the man!
The cheerleaders trying compare cloud.com to cloud .co domains.
Sorry burst fan boys hopes but don’t compare a mansion on the ocean to a 300 dollar apartment a month in bad area of a city imo
Cloudfidential.com says
I’d value cloud.com at $15 million, minimum.

In addition here is what most people missed :
Cloud.com was adquired just May 2010 , 15 months ago…
Sept 2010
“Mike: Has has owning the domain Cloud.com impacted your business?
Peder: It has had a significant impact on the growth of the business as we came out of stealth mode. For one, having a top level domain brings instant traffic, awareness and, in many cases, credibility in a market place.

“I wonder if Cloud.com will do a UDRP to get Cloud.co?”
Its just my point of view but I don’t think they would have standing.
The reason being (if I am not mistaken) is that the owner of Cloud.com was given the opportunity to purchase the .CO version as part of the trademark purchase thing… what ever the deal was… that the .CO company set up for all trademark owners.
They didn’t take advantage of it. Now the ownership changed hands, so I think the chance to take out a claim against the .CO version is since passed.
That is not to say that more screwed up things haven’t happened before.
Just my point of view.
Cheers

I highly doubt they will try a udrp for junk cloud.co when they have the .com
If anything they should hope the .co is developed and means for traffic to .com LOL

I have no doubt that Shilling is right on the money for Cloud.com, there is only one way for Generics to go & that’s (UP) (there is only one Cloud.com in the world) –

How much is Cloud.CO sold? Anyone knows?
owen frager says
I just blogged an eye-opening piece on Citrix, although if you click on the cloud computing tab at the bottom of the article you can go back through a thread with hundreds of posts and dozens of leads that might put this all in perspective for you.
owen frager says
“Researcher IDC expects the segment that Cloud.com competes in to jump to $11.5 billion by 2014, from $4.5 billion last year. “Like everyone else, they’re trying to pivot into the broader infrastructure business,” says VMware CEO Paul Maritz.”

It has been the rage word for aprox 18 months (right at the time cloud.com was adquired)
such an innocuous word…
In the meantime you guys still talking about the deceased : 3d names.
