A new site HideMyMugShot.com promises to keep your mug shot out of the public eye if you happen to get arrested.
I guess that’s a small price to pay to escape facing ridicule by family and friends a possible divorce from your spouse and firing from your job.
However the owners of the site didn’t quite understand the concept of defensive domain registrations.
Although they proudly advertise their site, HideMyMugShot.com they didn’t spend the extra $10 to grab HideYourMugShot.com which someone else registered just a month ago at Godaddy.com and is making quite a nice parked page.
Personally I think HideYourMugShot.com is the better domain.
On the other hand as of time of publication both HideMyMugShots.com and HideYourMugShots.com are available, another $20 this company should have spent to protect its new “brand”.
So for $30 this company could have registered some really important defensive registrations for the brand they are trying to build.
This is further proof that every business can use a the help of someone in the domain industry to get it right the first time.
Oh if you want to hear more about the service (although I know no one here will ever need it) here you go:
“An innovative website dedicated to online reputation management has developed a way to push arrested persons criminal information and mug shots off of the first page of Google and other popular mug shot websites when searched.”
“Given the popular nature of arrest data online and the damage it can have on one’s professional and social reputation, hidemymugshot.com has set up this service to shove this information off the first page of Google. The service was started by a team of specialists that realized the damaging consequences that mug shot websites are causing to professionals and how much of an effect ones arrest and mug shot data can have if it appears on the first page of Google for that individuals name.”
“Although the importance of getting your arrest and mug shot info off of the first page of Google results may be obvious, the reasons behind the arrest and mug shots ranking so high in Google may not be so apparent. In many major counties across the U.S., sheriff’s offices will post the arrested parties criminal information as well as their mug shots in their servers and release this data in real-time or once a day. Many third party websites such as floridaarrest.org as well as bustedmugshots.com and mugshotsonline.com scrape this data and post it on their websites for advertising profit. Because of the popularity of these websites and the traffic they generate, Google pays much attention to these sites and constantly indexes them and gives them high rankings.”
“Hidemymugshot.com was set up to fight the humiliation and embarrassment that having your mug shot online can cause for your job, your relationships, and most importantly your reputation. The science behind persevering one’s reputation by pushing your name beyond the first page lies behind the hours, connections, and often manual labor involved in getting the desired results. Even if a case was dropped and a record was sealed or expunged the third party websites that have the information up would remain oblivious to the harm this information has on one’s reputation. Research shows that most people do not venture past the first page for their search results. Hidemymugshot.com guarantees that they will push your mug shot down from the first page or your money back.”

There are actually borderline predatory sites out there that make use of public arrest records and mugshots to automatically publish them on a page neatly SEO’d to the name of the arrested party. In time, they usually crawl the top- since these sites have been linked to death, they all have decent mojo.
Then, in exchange for $50 or $90 or $199, they’ll ‘unpublish’ it.
I’m a firm believer that 1960’s public records laws in a 2011 internet world aren’t a good idea. It gives rise to creative abuses like this- and there are there other examples.
